I purchased a paper shredder here that burned out during the third use. I brought it back, to be told by 2 sales associates that they stopped carrying that unit because they had "major returns" and that it was "junk"(their quotes). However, they told me I couldn't return it because it was past their 14 day return policy.
The manager came over to speak to me and I explained the situation. I simply wanted a working shredder and was happy to exchange it for a model that didn't give the company constant problems. I am also a manager in a large retail chain and asked him if he might make an exception. He kept refusing and I told him I was aware that they didn't carry the model because I knew they had a lot of returns. He denied it, but when I told him 2 of his associates had admitted to this, he sighed and relented. It was perfectly clear that he was annoyed that had been made aware of the problems the company had with this model. Hey, if you're not going to be decent about processing the exchange, why bother. I'd expect this attitude from a $10/hr cashier, not a manager.
But I appreciated that he let me exchange the unit, here's where my problem with this manager occurs (besides the attitude). First, despite my having my receipt, it took him TWENTY MINUTES to process the return in the register. Second, the only way he agreed to the exchange was if I purchased the extended warranty. What BS, but I just wanted to get a working shredder. In the end, I owed him money for that, but there was a $20 rebate on the new model, so it wouldn't cost me too much more, right? Wrong. When he finally finished the transaction, I watched the rebate coupon print out (have you seen them? Staples' rebates coupons are long - about feet long - you can't miss them!) He took them all from the register, folded them and he then handed me a receipt which I assumed included my rebate and then made a big deal about a $5 coupon that printed out as well. Bla bla $5 on my next purchase, here isn't this great, bla bla. Nice distraction! I grabbed what he handed me, picked up the new shredder, which was distracting because it weighed a ton, and left. Once outside, I realized that the asshole kept my rebate coupon. I went back to the store and explained to the clerk that the manager didn't give me my rebate. He looked around and I asked to speak to the manager again because he'd surely know where he put it. I knew that he'd intentionally not given it to me and surprise! - the associate called him in the back office and he refused to come out! Classy! I explained that I knew it was nearby because I had seen both rebate forms print out just 3 minutes earlier. The manager told the clerk to re-print it, but I told him I knew it was nearby and to please have another quick look Guess where he found it. Crumpled it up and tossed it in the trash behind the register. The clerk un-crumpled it and gave it to me. The poor kid was so perplexed.
How sure am I that the manager did this intentionally? Absolutely. He had them in his hand, but somehow managed to only had me my receipt and the $5 coupon, but coincidentally "forgot" to hand me the rebate coupon that comes in 2 parts and is 3 feet long? If he really did forget to hand them to me, he'd have told the clerk they were at the register. But he knew they were crumpled and in the trash, so he told him to reprint them. I'm pretty sure the manager's name is Jarrod and he lost me, a long-term customer that lives only a few blocks away. Shame. read more
