I want to start this with my BIGGEST issue I had at this school. I was hit by a teacher. Marie Juergens, who STILL teaches spanish here. In my 7th grade here in 2016, she saw me texting on my phone under the table (I was texting my mom saying I felt depressed that day, something I struggled with a lot at the time), which was not allowed. She came over to me and instead of telling me to put my phone away, she came up behind me and hit me multiple times on the back of my neck. She had a closed fist, she wasn't slapping me. I was not close with this teacher and I always behaved in this class- not like that matters either way. YOU SHOULD NEVER PUT YOUR HANDS ON ANYONE, especially a MINOR. I started to cry because I was overwhelmed and embarrassed that my entire class saw me get hit and that I was hit in the first place. I put my head down on the desk, she walked away, and I texted my mom what happened. She told the class as I was crying "is she seriously crying?" My mom called the school immediately, a staff member came to get me from class. I talked to the principal, they said they were sorry that ever happened, and they said they would talk to her. She was out of class for a few days with a substitute. The next time I saw her, she told the class "I have to treat you guys nicer now, since SOMEONE (looks over at me) got me in trouble." She was never fired. I had to continue to be in her class for the rest of the year. This is absolutely abhorrent behavior from her, the principal, and the staff. I would rather be understaffed in Spanish teachers than have a teacher stay in their job who has hit a child. They saw me cry, they saw me extremely upset, and my mom was there to report it with me. NOTHING. HAPPENED. Do not take your kid here. They do it care about abuse towards their students. The rest of this review covers teachers and how they treat students, my experience with not getting help when I was undiagnosed with ADHD and treated badly for my symptoms that were clearly signs of ADHD, and teachers poor teaching methods. * Not being treated with empathy while struggling with ADHD symptoms: I was often labeled as a kid that didn't pay attention and got bad feedback on my progress reports from this. I felt like the staff at the school did not properly support me and just focused on punishing students rather than finding the root cause. Turns out, all of my issues were signs of ADHD--something I wasn't diagnosed with until I was 18. Had a teacher or staff member sat with me and tried to understand why I would talk in class, had a lack of motivation at times, and had a hard time with traditional studying methods, it would have saved me and I could have had disability accommodations that I now receive while in college. Instead, they treated me like a bad kid. My science teacher, Kimberly Frank, stopped her lecture to tell the entire class that I was annoying. This sounds made up because of how inappropriate that is, but it's true. The entire class was talking to their partners, but she singled me out many times like this. Staff need to be better trained and to treat ALL students with respect. It's absurd. In my 8th grade, I had to get hospitalized due to depression that was caused from how I was being treated at this school. I missed one of my Spanish exams and instead of being allowed to retake the exam, I was given an F and it dropped my grade from a B to a D. This is forever on my transcript. The school could care less about mental illnesses students struggle with, which they knew I had. One of the counselors there even asked one of my classmates if "I was still suicidal" which is a major violation of my personal information and privacy. That should be discussed between me and my parents. Absolutely INSANE. * Bullying and racism on campus: I experienced a lot of drama and bullying on campus--things staff were aware of. There was antisemitism, racism against people of color, and other forms of discrimination. I also had peers of mine get in trouble, if they were caught, for sending naked photos to other students. Things staff did not care to look into, despite it being illegal for minors to distribute that information. * Teachers not being good at teaching: My teachers, mainly math and science, were not good at their jobs. The way that they taught was not engaging at all. Just sitting and writing things down and having students copy it. That's what I experienced. No engaging questions to the class or walking around to see how students are doing. When students didn't understand teachers seemed upset rather than actually try to help them figure out what they are struggling on and showing them other methods to learn (which is what they are taught to do. There is not one single method to learn something). The worst teachers i've ever had throughout my entire school experience of 15+ years was at Standley Middle school. Do not take your kid here. Just take them literally anywhere else. read more

I rarely write reviews, but my experience at Standley was so upsetting that I feel compelled to speak out. Throughout my time there, I witnessed and, unfortunately, experienced firsthand how some people behaved in a way that was truly unacceptable. The environment was filled with clankers--people who seemed more interested in tearing others down than fostering respect. More troubling was the blatant racism I encountered toward Black and Mexican students, staff, and community members. It was heartbreaking to see such prejudice still alive and unchecked in a place that should be about learning and inclusion. I hoped things would improve, but instead, I saw little to no effort to address these issues. The toxicity and discrimination made it a hostile environment for those targeted, and it's a shame because everyone deserves to feel safe and respected. Unfortunately, my experience at Standley has left me disappointed and disillusioned. My daughter first year of the school very disappointed in this school as my daughter was Diagnose with autism has an IEP anyways from the first day of school first week was excellent then the kids that were at that same school when she entered sixth grade knew her and brought a whole bunch of drama from that year to sixth grade and she just barely got there first week was good second week for a whole month she was getting bullied and they kept on saying oh no she's not she's just getting picked on. I was like no as this Mom is big on this topic she's getting bullied. As multiple times I had called the school told my ​ daughter don't worry it. I have an open communication with my daughter anything that happens at school to let me know so please parents check in with your students every day even though if they don't like it. Second week of school she almost got jumped by a couple students one student told her just walk and go tell the principal which I have taught my daughter to always go and do. As a parent that works for the school district 2 it does happen to our our kids too. They got multiple calls finally the principal said I had a contract written out from the students that kept them bothering her until I said I will take this if I have to the police station not just that a few of those students lived in their complex and it also leading to our complex feel those students were also stalking her on her tiktok and leaving her messages and saying stuff things had stopped for a little bit then she was into her locker and somebody wrote the N word on her locker she came home and told me I was like oh yeah no this mom doesn't stand for that was able to get a hold of the teacher she's like well if you want I can move her I believe that's the time the lockers were getting knocked down and replaced I was like you know what my daughter says she's okay right now but maybe you can talk to the students. Things were going good then I was getting calls that she was missing class one day principal text me your daughter's hiding in the bathroom one reason for somebody to be hiding in the restroom found out a student had spit on her at lunch not just her multiple students they took. it to the principal nothing much was done. Oh this whole school's here I had wrote and called multiple times multiple students had complain about this student but the blame was put on my daughter that she was harassing her and she wasn't. Something was written out that they have to stay away from her of course my daughter had her phone and was recording what was said from the other students that came up to her and told her that she had to apologize which I saw everything and I said no for something you didn't do you do not need to apologize the girl spit on and a few students not just mine. So my daughter didn't feel comfortable and entering the class as every time she came in the girl said something and the teacher kept on looking at my and said you better leave her alone oh my daughter did was walk into the classroom. And I'm the kind of parent that speaks up for her and other kiddos that are going through this because I am a big big activist about this bullying stuff. Then she started getting uncomfortable because there was people following her on campus a guy that was following her on campus. Course another call made to the counseling had did five calls in a week no call backs. Until I got a email that my daughter was skipping class that's when I found out the real reason so I wasn't getting any calls back from the counselor so I went straight to the principal reply back as I told him that I will still waiting for Chadwick never got back to me I left her a couple messages. you left in the said she was going to call me she never did of course after I had sent that she called me bac. Told her about the internet and the classroom multiple times my daughter was able to stay in the office but multiple times there was somebody else in here in there that told her she had to go back to class so one person told her she could stay and the other person had to tell her to go back to class what really needs to go on this school is communication they like communication on all the stuff in the office especially the counselors and the principal. The biggest thing was when my daughter told me that she had asked to use the bathroom the guy teacher told her yes you can go to the bathroom but this is your last time to go to the bathroom so the other student that was in the same classroom as my daughter said so can I go he's like yeah you can go anytime but she can't. So my daughter went to the bathroom she did come back ask the student what the teacher had said she said after you asked him and I asked him can I go to the bathroom he said yeah you can go anytime she said that he said that you're not allowed to go anymore this was your last time so if any kids that are on medication and it makes them go to the bathroom too much my daughter did leave a week read more

If I could give Standley 0 stars I would. I attended this school my entire 6th grade year up to the middle of my 7th grade year (September 2008 to March 2010) and to be very honest these were one of the WORSE years of my life. I hated this school so much, it's not even funny. I was bullied tremendously while being a student here and school faculty never did a good job addressing the big bullying problem that standley has because this school for many years has had a serious bullying problem which seriously needs to be addressed. Also the white students who attend this school who are from the neighborhood were very racist towards the bus students who were students of color coming from inner city and socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods. Also the students of color that would come to standley from school buses coming from inner city/socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods were very problematic and narcissistic and they were the main reason why there was a lot of drama and bullying at standley. Both my kids went here and it was okay for my older one who was a straight A student and awful for my younger one who had learning challenges. This was about 4-5 years ago and I'm just getting around to writing a review about it, so hopefully they've improved. I ended up taking my younger one out because the teachers and administration weren't going out of their way to help her. The guy Prinipal seemed like either didn't care or was more interested in protecting his job there. There were some good teachers but they seem over-worked and the awful teachers were mean and didn't care to help students struggling, especially this one Science teacher who made the students take meticulous detailed notes which was a struggle for my disorganized, dyslexic, dygraphia younger child. Their IEP staffer Ms Lord wasn't much help to my child, unfortunately. One of her methods of trying to be helpful was telling my child every 5 minutes that she better finish up or do the work, EVERY 5 minutes, so my kid was frustrated with her and eventually told her she didn't want or need her help. My husband and I put our children in this school because it fed into UCHigh, but UCHigh for my older straight A and athletic student wasn't a great experience. They have so many high achieving students at UCHigh that they don't care if your student it ok there or not. There were issues with bullying and teachers not caring to communicate with parents when there were issues. However it did seem like they had some decent teachers and coaches. There were a few not so good teachers, like one of the female gym teachers who's name I dont remember. Hopefully it's better, my elder child, graduated 2021. Good luck parents. A terrible school. If you ever want to send your child to this school, this is a terrible choice. This school is not supportive, has terrible teachers, has a lot of bullying, and their school computer system is surprisingly very bad. So if you don't want to get your child to have depression/problems in life, do not go to this school. Another reason NOT to go to this school is that there is one fight at least every day, sometimes, people just get beaten up for no reason, and the worst thing about it that teachers and staff just watch at it like a show. Teachers are very rude and disrespectful to children, they act like children are slaves and they have to do everything for them. Some teachers even make racist comments. I would not recommend this school worse school ever. The teachers and administrators there don't care about the students and don't communicate with the parents if the child is having a difficult time in the classroom. Instead they wait until 3 days before graduation to tell the parents that students are missing assignments or some missing more assignments then others. They choose what students they are okay with promoting even if that student doesn't meet the requirements. I know as a parent I would be upset if you tell me at the end that my child isn't promoting because they're missing assignments but was never made aware until now. The school system is totally a fail now PERIOD and Stanley is the worse school ever.... read more

Let's just say that the teachers try hard, the principal is involved, and there's a desire to be a good middle school across the board. Even so, if your middle schooler has a 504 Plan, the counselors are overworked and burdened, so it will be a challenge to have your student's actual learning needs met. The school could benefit from a more racially diverse teaching staff to better reflect the demographics of students who attend. read more

This School is great because I actually learned something unlike my previous school which had very rude teachers but this school has much kinder teachers that care for you and for others as well as the office staff that helps keep the school as great as it is. read more

The school is okay but they aren't very supportive and they give us so much work to do like your never done..if you miss one day of school and you have 3 test and 6 different assignments but the fun thing is Yearbook the field trips are so fun and amazing read more

The number of rude teachers in this school who has no filter in their mouth, who can freely insult the intelligence of their students or these young kids, a male math teacher who can say "you're stupid" in front of a whole class, a female PE teacher who can tell a child, 'you're not very intelligent are you?', these are few of the words my child has reported to me. I am appalled to have learned many disturbing behaviors of some of the teachers in this school who should be setting a good example to their students rather than leaving a negative mark in these kids head like there are something wrong with them, truth of the matter is, these kids probably doesn't realize it's these few teachers who are so unhappy about either their personal life or the work they do that they become verbally and emotionally abusive to these students. I absolutely plan on contacting the principal of this school. for those who are reading this, and your child goes to this school, speak to your children about the same matter. make sure they understand that they don't deserve to hear those type of words from their "teachers", or anyone. read more

This school has great the potential to be a great school (here's the but), but the principal (Heidi Lyon and vice principal) are so extremely incompetent - leading to such feelings of frustration. If you want your child to attend a school that has old teachers who have no yet stepped into the 21st century, a principal that is a control freak over stupid dress codes (no sleeveless tops for girls), principal is never approachable or available to parents (spends her time sucking up to the upper echelon of san diego unified (got to keep them snowed so they don't know how useless you are at your job, kids that feel that their self-expression and creative skills are punished not encouraged. No fun to be had at this school - why, that might actually enable children to enjoy middle school. Upside - this is a nice neighborhood - don't recommend the school. Ongoing problems persist and are nourished instead of being addressed. Too bad - very frustrating. read more
