I would like to suggest that the San Diego Unified School District spend some of those Prop. S or Prop. M funds on fixing up this Madison High School. I was there this morning for some scholarship business and I thought the school looked like it could use a lot of fixing up. The campus had a dated, tacky, 60's look to it and I do not mean that in a cool, campy way. First of all is the terrible location-right off a busy freeway interstate and squished behind some strip mall liquor store. Not prosperous-looking housing surrounds it-the campus looks even more like it was dropped into the area without a thought. Maybe I am just more familiar with Clairemont High-and that school's great view over-looking Mission Bay and immediate easy access to a Del Taco on the corner! Once I got myself into Madison's computer room, I was impressed with the new computers they have, but the room was drafty and cold. The architecture is flat and not spacious-the school feels very confining and the small parking lot I parked in seemed clearly inadequate for a busy campus. All is not lost here. I don't think Madison is in danger of any school closure scares only because it is needed to serve students on the eastern side of Clairemont. But it could use a facelift just like Lincoln High got. Maybe not an extreme one, where all the kids are bused to other schools while they pretty things up. Perhaps a heavy-duty summer refurbishing. The sports teams here are not bad and the school does seem to have a lot of spirit. It would be nice if Madison got a nip-and-tuck to liven it up some.

I worked here about 11 years ago as an IBT (Instructional Behavioral Technician). Back then, the campus was in a cosmetic transition and the school had some security issues. Flash forward to this week, and ya boy is back here just working as a substitute ASL interpreter, (MHS has for decades now had a pretty good D/HH program), and I must say . . MHS had improved tremendously. The staff here are just as before; very nice and friendly. The grounds are cleaner and appear safer. The music program and auto shop have been overhauled for the better. And the football field and physical ed. facilities have been completely renovated. Even though I am no longer a staffer here, and would be willing and proud to work here again should the opportunity arise in the future.

This is the worst school I have ever attended in my 15+ years of schooling. I am now in college,…read morebeing treated the way I should, and feel the need to leave a review on how badly this school set me up. This school genuinely traumatized me. Ended up switching to a charter school after my first year in 2017 since I felt so anxious around other students after my experience here. The biggest issue here is the LARGE amount of bullying on campus. As a freshman I was immediately bullied by other freshman. One girl randomly singled me out in class and yelled at me in front of everyone. She was upset she got caught vaping in class and thought I "snitched on her", which I didn't do. She was upset she was caught doing something she shouldn't have been doing as a 14 year old. People filmed me crying on snapchat, posted it, and I had people I didn't even know in other grades coming up to me asking about it. I left the class and reported it to the office in tears from embarrassment. They suspended her for 2 days, that was it. She also got into a physical fight earlier that year and dragged a girl by her hair. All within the first 2 months of school. How did the school help me? They switched me from that class to another period, which made me change my elective class. This was halfway through the school year, during spring semester, so any other elective open was closed except for choir. I was unhappy doing something I didn't sign up for all because someone bullied me. I was also kicked out of yearbook during my fall semester, a month into the school year, because I had a B in the class. Ms. Frohoff chose me as an 8th grader to be enrolled in yearbook due to good grades. She kicked me out because the single page I did was bad to her, even though all I did was a follow a prompt I was given. I did it EXACTLY how I was told. She wanted me to change the quotes students gave me. After she kicked me out, they were changed, and students messaged me at the end of the year upset their quotes weren't what they said. I thought that was ridiculous. I had to get put into AVID since it was an available elective. So within my first year, I had 3 different electives. Only 1, yearbook, I wanted to do. This messed up my schedule completely. I also had Frohoff for English. I will forever be disappointed with that class. While other classes read interesting books and had fun activities that helped them learn, all I remember from her class was her complaining about her personal life and just handing out worksheets and quizzes. English is so fun and I felt like this class was such a failure compared to other teachers on campus. I left after my freshman year due to the bullying and lack of support from the staff at the school. There is also racism and discrimination on campus that I noticed other students struggling with. There is also drug use on campus. Hopefully it's better now, but from my experience and others, It is not a friendly environment for most students. I feel like you have to get lucky with the classmates and teachers you have to genuinely enjoy your time here. Oh and not to mention, a teacher getting caught during a sting operation a few years ago for trying to meet up for sexual activities with a minor. And another instance of student committing suicide because of bullying on campus (shown in other reviews). It's insane they don't try to fix their bullying issue after all of this. There are better high schools to take your child too.

In my 7th grade here in 2016, she saw me texting on my phone under the table (I was texting my mom saying I felt depressed that day, something I struggled with a lot at the time), which was not allowed. She came over to me and instead of telling me to put my phone away, she came up behind me and hit me multiple times on the back of my neck. She had a closed fist, she wasn't slapping me. I was not close with this teacher and I always behaved in this class- not like that matters either way. YOU SHOULD NEVER PUT YOUR HANDS ON ANYONE, especially a MINOR. I started to cry because I was overwhelmed and embarrassed that my entire class saw me get hit and that I was hit in the first place. I put my head down on the desk, she walked away, and I texted my mom what happened. She told the class as I was crying "is she seriously crying?" My mom called the school immediately, a staff member came to get me from class. I talked to the principal, they said they were sorry that ever happened, and they said they would talk to her. She was out of class for a few days with a substitute. The next time I saw her, she told the class "I have to treat you guys nicer now, since SOMEONE (looks over at me) got me in trouble." She was never fired. I had to continue to be in her class for the rest of the year. This is absolutely abhorrent behavior from her, the principal, and the staff. I would rather be understaffed in Spanish teachers than have a teacher stay in their job who has hit a child. They saw me cry, they saw me extremely upset, and my mom was there to report it with me. NOTHING. HAPPENED. Do not take your kid here. They do it care about abuse towards their students. The rest of this review covers teachers and how they treat students, my experience with not getting help when I was undiagnosed with ADHD and treated badly for my symptoms that were clearly signs of ADHD, and teachers poor teaching methods. * Not being treated with empathy while struggling with ADHD symptoms: I was often labeled as a kid that didn't pay attention and got bad feedback on my progress reports from this. I felt like the staff at the school did not properly support me and just focused on punishing students rather than finding the root cause. Turns out, all of my issues were signs of ADHD--something I wasn't diagnosed with until I was 18. Had a teacher or staff member sat with me and tried to understand why I would talk in class, had a lack of motivation at times, and had a hard time with traditional studying methods, it would have saved me and I could have had disability accommodations that I now receive while in college. Instead, they treated me like a bad kid. My science teacher, Kimberly Frank, stopped her lecture to tell the entire class that I was annoying. This sounds made up because of how inappropriate that is, but it's true. The entire class was talking to their partners, but she singled me out many times like this. Staff need to be better trained and to treat ALL students with respect. It's absurd. In my 8th grade, I had to get hospitalized due to depression that was caused from how I was being treated at this school. I missed one of my Spanish exams and instead of being allowed to retake the exam, I was given an F and it dropped my grade from a B to a D. This is forever on my transcript. The school could care less about mental illnesses students struggle with, which they knew I had. One of the counselors there even asked one of my classmates if "I was still suicidal" which is a major violation of my personal information and privacy. That should be discussed between me and my parents. Absolutely INSANE. * Bullying and racism on campus: I experienced a lot of drama and bullying on campus--things staff were aware of. There was antisemitism, racism against people of color, and other forms of discrimination. I also had peers of mine get in trouble, if they were caught, for sending naked photos to other students. Things staff did not care to look into, despite it being illegal for minors to distribute that information. * Teachers not being good at teaching: My teachers, mainly math and science, were not good at their jobs. The way that they taught was not engaging at all. Just sitting and writing things down and having students copy it. That's what I experienced. No engaging questions to the class or walking around to see how students are doing. When students didn't understand teachers seemed upset rather than actually try to help them figure out what they are struggling on and showing them other methods to learn (which is what they are taught to do. There is not one single method to learn something). The worst teachers i've ever had throughout my entire school experience of 15+ years was at Standley Middle school. Do not take your kid here. Just take them literally anywhere else.

This staff allows the players to do what they want despite what they are told. It was so pathetic how one coach REPEATEDLY told his player to come out the game but the player refused and with no consequences, lol however this was a favorite player so i guess this makes it ok! And according to another coach the players families migrated here for their great great grandsons to win a football game! Are you for real?! This is the teams halftime speech? This STAFF DOESN'T coach, they teach plays they find online or video games. They have no experience or knowledge in POSITION COACHING! In THREE SEASONS (30 games) they gave up 1,184 points and only scored 400+ points! In THREE SEASONS they somewhat promoted three players (couple of their favorites) with ONLY ONE highlight video! And once you piss them off because your player isn't returning they are removed from HUDL and the player has just LOST ALL their highlights! How childish and immature coming from what I assume are grown men, and a preacher nonetheless! It is beyond fathomable the mentality and behaviors set forth through their actions! Once these three got ahold of this team three seasons ago, they've lost and have never made it to playoffs. If nothing changes, the outcome never changes! The head coach literally tried to cheat the system by scheduling D5 games as a D4 team to get more wins to make it to playoffs! Seriously, and the administration is completely onboard with this mentality!? This is the example set! I can go on with more..but it won't matter because denial is a...
