This is the worst experience I have ever had at a coffee shop. I was kicked out and threatened to have the cops called on me for sitting there, quietly learning and humming my music work.
I am a performer and I often go to coffee shops to review my scores, learn notes and rhythms and listen to music. I have been to Standing Passengers before and this was never a problem, until last night.
I went there to do my usual work, ordered a chai latte, sat by myself and was minding my own business. The only people in there were myself, the female barista and one other patron sitting with headphones on. The place was empty. A few people had come and gone but no one was having a problem with me quietly going about my work.
About an hour in to my music study, in the middle of me humming through a page in the music score, the barista comes over and says I need to be quieter and sing softer because I'm disturbing others. I looked at her in surprise and didn't say anything in response. I must have been incredulous. So, I started singing down the octave with my mouth closed and quietly snapping through rhythms so as not to be singing the whole time. Apparently, this wasn't good enough because the chick came back over a little upset and said I had to leave immediately. My first response was to ask "Why? I'm not doing anything but sitting here minding my own business, humming to myself? What is the problem?" She responded, getting more heated, that I was being an annoying nuisance, snapping my fingers on purpose and disturbing others. There was literally nobody in there!! How am I being annoying when there isn't anybody there? We went back and forth for awhile, me trying to understand why I was being kicked out and her dodging the question and telling me I had to get out. And then she started threatening me by saying she was calling the police and the owner was on the way. So, I refused to leave and instead decided I would wait to speak with the police and the owner. A few expletives were exchanged with her, mostly us telling each other to stop talking and leave each other alone.
(And by the way, I went over and talked to the only other patron in the place to ask her if I had been annoying or done anything wrong. She said "No. I had my headphones in." So, tell me again, why am I being kicked out??)
So, the owner storms in and immediately starts yelling and carrying on, telling me to get the F out of his establishment, which is a private place and the barista has the authority to tell me whatever she wants. I tried to calmly explain my side of the story, which he didn't listen to a word of. I was accused of threatening them, which I never did. And by this time, we were all standing around just yelling, a few more expletives being exchanged. By this time, I was tired of being treated with such disrespect, that I gathered my things together, put my coat on, and told them I would be filing a complaint with the Bureau and the Chamber of Commerce. I was shrugged off, smirked at like this whole thing was humorous and told the police were coming to review the surveillance tape. Review the tape for what? Go ahead. All they will see is someone sitting there, then someone being told to leave for doing nothing wrong, then people standing around yelling at each other.
Please don't give this place your business. I have never been so rudely treated at a coffee shop in my life, for simply doing my work as only I know (and other performers) know how to do it. Yes, there is humming, speaking words in rhythm and finger snapping involved. How am I an annoying nuisance for doing these things? Especially when there is no one in the place?
Also, I must mention that the place in general is sub par. The drinks are always weirdly served luke warm and not hot, the floors are filthy with dust and dirt everywhere, the pastries are not fresh, the honey is old and the place does not give off a warm atmosphere.
I had been here a few times before because it's in the neighborhood but of course, will never be going back. I am NOT welcome there, as this has been made perfectly clear.
