HOW TO CLOSE YOUR STAMPS.COM ACCOUNT:
Today was a lazy day for me and I wanted to just stay at home and relax. Besides, my gas tank was about a quarter full and you know that stuff's expensive. I'm halfway through the week and I want to make it last a bit more, so I think to myself, "Well, thanks to technology, I can do things online!"
I wanted to deposit a check online and I'd need a stamp. I walked to where we kept stamps in our house and surprisingly, no stamps to be found. Okay, so I will Google where I can buy stamps online and print them. This led me to Stamps.com and I trusted that it would be a good place to go since it is partnered with the USPS.
I made my account and installed the software. I printed my envelope and set out the door to put the envelope in the mail slot. I come back to the computer and set out to find a way to close my account. Although the website looks up-to-date and with the times, you cannot close your account online. You must call. I read through the many horror stories people have had with Stamps.com and I sat in my chair, afraid that would be me too.
To be cautious and knowledgeable, I looked up their terms and conditions so that I could read up on their termination policy. If you do not want any service fees charged on you, you must cancel your account BEFORE the trial ends. I had been a member for perhaps 30 minutes LOL.
Nervously, I picked up the phone and slowly punched in their phone number. I was hoping that I would not be placed on hold for two hours like others have said. To my delight, I was probably on hold for about three minutes and I was able to talk to a customer service representative. My call was placed around 5 PM CST, making it 3 PM PST. This seems to be an ideal time to call. The wait is not very long.
Alright, so because my account was newly created, it had not been completely processed in the system or something so I was put on hold for a minute or so for the guy to make sure my account is up and running and ready. I only bought one stamp and it showed that.
Now, if you HAVE to be adamant about closing your account (especially if you are early in the trial period). They WILL try to persuade you to stay and even offer to extend your trial period for another month as well as sell you other plans. Ah, but no, I had to cut him off. I HAD TO. Being a poor college student, I just wanted one stamp, okay? I don't have the money to pay $15.99 per month aside from any other bogus fees they may charge. I am glad this guy was nice, but I listened to him the first two times he tried to persuade me and the third time he tried to sell to me, I cut him off and asked him, "Please, is there ANY WAY I can close my account TODAY?" and he said, "Yes, of course. Hold on a moment. Let me just ask you one of your security questions." I answered him and then he said that my account was now closed and this is the confirmation number to tell anyone from Stamps.com that my account is CLOSED. Shortly thereafter, I would receive a confirmation e-mail stating that my account was now closed.
I was unsure if it would be sent "shortly" after because I had read other reviews saying they did not receive an e-mail at all. Thankfully, this CSR sent it to me lickety-split and the e-mail states that a final account statement will be sent to you. Then, of course, I wondered if that may be another horror story waiting to happen. I also received that e-mail shortly after and my bill was $0.00! YAY! Now, I'm still wary that this may all be false reassurance to me, but I am hoping that my time with Stamps.com is officially over and that I will not be plagued with hidden fees and monthly bills.
I forgot to cancel my Welcome Kit and I was unsure that if I logged in to the Stamps.com Store, my account would be re-opened. I called Stamps.com at their number again and after a minute on hold, I was able to talk to a CSR. The rep told me that he cannot cancel the Welcome Kit order from his computer but I can do it by signing in and canceling it myself. He reassured me that my account is most definitely closed and will remain closed even if I sign in there and the Store is a separate entity and nothing will happen to my account and I will not receive my Welcome Kit.
So that is my schpeal about Stamps.com. Reading all the reviews makes the company look super sketchy, but call at the right time and be firm and steadfast (if they are really resistant, I suggest bullying them and playing the role of angry customer and hollering for a manager) and you should be on your way. Play extremely cautious, know the terms and conditions, and ask questions to double-check that you and Stamps.com are officially OVER. read more
