It's inside a large newsagents so if you've got kids with you be prepared for lots of 'I want, I want' as it's full of sweets and toys. There are often large queues, which aren't helped by the fact that the staff seem to spend quite a lot of time talking to each other rather than serving. Not always, but enough times that it becomes an annoyance for regular users. Bizarrely, the nearest Post Box is a few hundred yards down the road, so either hand letters in over the counter or take a bit of a walk after you've bought your stamps! If you're an Ebayer in the area, I'd much sooner recommend taking a trip out to Scawby where the service is absolutely excellent and can't be faulted in any way.

There's a large grocery store to the front which is handy as it's a fairly small village, and a good enough sized Post Office to the rear. They seem to be quite professional in there - uniformed staff who know what they're talking about, and I've never had to queue for too long to be served. It's just a couple of minutes off the M180 so quite handy if you need to get to the PO on the move. It's on the main road through to Epworth, and there's enough parking at the front.

It's a little shop as well, so you can pick up essential groceries (such as chocolate) while you're there. There's parking available at the front although it can be a little awkward as it's on a main junction but generally people will let you through (there's keep clear signs on the road, but they're often ignored). This is only minutes from Robin Hood Airport so it's handy for any last minute essentials before you fly.

Still if you are Ponte born and bred it's your duty to read up on it on the net or get a book and go and have a look. It's not an amazing day out but it's a nice little walk and picnic location in good weather (it has to be good weather it has no roof!) easily located from the bus station and monkhill train station the castle is Pontefracts most important landmark and deserves its status.

However, the ruins are not open to visit, which is a huge shame. You can still see a lot from the market place and graveyard. Inside the minster, is quite dull compared to nearby York or Beverley Minsters. There's nothing outstanding in glass or stonework.
