Short version: Dr. Bill at Affordable Vet took care of my very sick, very injured dog, quoted and saved me $2,000 more than the other opinion I got, and was kind, caring, and a very gifted surgeon. Highly, highly recommended. Read long version below for the full story.
Long version: My husband and I had just moved to Ann Arbor from Chicago with our slightly neurotic, slightly high-maintenance cocker spaniel mix when he started limping. We ignored it for a while because his energy was great, he was eating and drinking normally, and he still liked to run, jump, sleep on the bed, chase rabbits, and play. When the limp hit the four week mark, our Chicago vet told us to go take him to a vet we trusted and get him checked out. Since we hadn't established ourselves with a vet in Ann Arbor, we decided to take him into my parents' vet in Toledo, OH for a quick check-up. Within ten minutes of meeting Shane, the Toledo vet told us that Shane had a fully torn ACL and needed to be operated on immediately. To confirm this injury, they needed to put him under anesthesia to conduct the right X-rays. After giving us an initial quote of $450.00 for the first round of X-rays and anesthesia and another quote of $3,000 for the actual ACL surgery, we called our Chicago vet crying. She said to get a second opinion.
I called AVS, explained my situation, and they set me up with Dr. Bill, the owner. We brought our dog in, he explained that he agreed it was an ACL tear, and he also agreed that our dog would have to be put under to confirm. His price tag on the X-rays was about $250 less than we were originally quoted. The X-rays brought good news - it was only a partial tear. Dr. Bill said that we could operate if we wanted, but because Shane was a smaller dog (35 pounds) and it was only a partial tear, he suggested a conservative approach of waiting, nursing it, and keeping him very inactive for six weeks. We kept Shane inactive for six weeks, and it seemed to heal quite well.
Three months later, Shane started limping again. After waiting three weeks and keeping him inactive, it was still present, so back to Dr. Bill we went.
The news wasn't good. It was still a partial tear, but his meniscus was shot and it was surgical at this point. (A word of warning: Dr. Bill talks EXTREMELY fast. If you're not a medical person, it can be a little overwhelming. I'm an arts consultant - his drawings of my dog's knees on his whiteboard meant nothing.) He gave me a quote, scheduled the surgery for a month out, and was very honest about how challenging the aftercare would be. His surgical quote was $2,000 less than the original vet's quote.
We are now one week out from surgery and Shane is already walking better than he was before surgery. Dr. Bill's very honest assessment of how hard the first four days would be ("It's going to be hell") was accurate, but I appreciate that. There were no surprises. AVS's prices were also much less than our original vet's quote.
I cannot recommend AVS and Dr. Bill enough. We still have a long way to go with recovery, but I am confident that we received the best care possible, a more than fair price, and a future with a vet that we trust completely. Thank you, Dr. Bill and AVS!!! read more
