I've been taking my little buddies here for a few years now. They are reasonable and realistic. I have a 13 year old pug, and there comes a point when you have to face the music and realize that your buddy is no longer a young spring chicken, and the decision has to be made whether it's worth pumping your poor old pup with daily meds to just maintain the inevitable or just let him complete life's stages naturally. Unlike other vet's I have gone to in the past, Dr. Bill has given me practicable options to help my little old man with his life stages, rather than pumping the little guy with unnecessary meds, and spending extra money. Many Vet's that I have gone to in the past, will pull at the owner's heart strings or apply a guilt trip on the owner in order to generate more revenue from operations, testing, and prescriptions. But the Doctor's that I have worked with at Affordable Vet Services are compassionate for the pet and over all well being, rather than just focusing on the business's bottom line. Only complain would be that front desk personal seems to not pay much attention when making appointments/ or expressing a concern. As detail seems to get lost from the time of schedule an appointment to seeing the doctor. There was a time when it wasn't necessary for me to make an appointment and bring the dogs in, when I could have just came in to pick up a prescription for what I was describing to the front desk personal by phone. This was a waste of time, and my dog had to wait another week in pain before I was able to make the appointment, that was not needed. read more

I am incredibly disappointed in Affordable Vet Services. We've been taking our dogs here for years and recently one of our dogs stopped eating. When I called to make an appointment for him to be seen I was told there would be no way they could get him in prior to the end of November. I was told that "frankly, there isn't any vet in the area who can get him in any ealier" which is a bunch of bull as I immediately called another area vet who brought our sick dog in the very next day. So, after many years of being a loyal customer who regularly recommended Affordable to friends this is no longer the case. We will never recommend them to anyone ever again and they have lost our business permanently because if you can't see our sick dog right away you are of absolutely no use to us. Thanks a lot for nothing. We will never again recommend you to anyone! read more

I like this clinic for scheduled visits, although I've never seen the same clinician more than once. BUT I have never been able to get an appointment if my dog is sick or needs to be seen in the next day or so. I called today and their next available appointment is in September. You could say maybe it's due to COVID but this has happened EVERY time there is something wrong with my dog over the last 4 years. They refer me to emergency. I'm going to find a vet that can accommodate sick appointments too, which are part of ongoing pet care, not just doing scheduled maintenance visits and surgeries, etc. read more

AVS and I have had some trying times, but they are the best. For years, we went to Washtenaw Animal Clinic (which is also pretty good) but started to become disenchanted with them. Among other things, their vet turn over seemed kind of high. Dr. Bill, on the other hand, is a stable force. Dr. Bill's methods are not recommended for delicate souls. He basically gives you a real-time narration of all possible diagnoses for a given problem as he is eliminating possibilities. For a day or two last year, he did have me thinking my precious schnauzer was going to die on us, but that had as much to do with my being too sensitive as it did with any insensitivity on his part. Also, he was being thorough. I appreciate that. The gert (my schnauz) and I will be going to Bill for the duration. read more

My husband and I love this vet for our furbabies. We adopted two kittens from a friend, and AVS completed their first well visit for just over $100 total (super affordable!). They are extremely pleasant and helpful, over the phone and in person. Dr. Bill even returned my call personally and talked me through some pre-adoption questions, weeks before we were even patrons. When our kittens started vomitting and having diarrhea, they even analyzed a sample for parasites free of charge. The only reason I'm giving this review 4 stars is because their hours are less than ideal. But don't let this deter you from selecting them as your vet. We are looking forward to many years of outstanding care from AVS! read more

Dr. Bill and Kelly are GREAT! My husband and I moved to Ann Arbor when our dog Lola was 5 months old and I was apprehensive about finding a new vet and having her spayed. Not only did Dr. Bill and Kelly take great care of Lola, they their warm and friendly demeanor totally put me at ease. When my dog had a slight infection from the stitches it wasn't a problem to just drop in and then, a few months later, when she ate something she wasn't supposed to Dr. Bill again took care of her at the drop of a hat. It must also be said that Lola LOVES going to Affordable Vet Services. We live nearby and whenever we walk by she pulls toward the door. In my entire life I've never had a dog that didn't hide under the chair at the vet, let alone want to go there. Thanks Dr. Bill and Kelly! I recently got an English Bulldog. His name is Newman and the sun rises and sets on this ball of fatty fur. And as a responsible owner, I searched high and low for a good vet. Some vets don't accept bulldogs and some just don't know how to work with their health needs. I found AVS through Yelp and gave them a call. On the phone they were incredibly friendly and answered all of my questions. I set up an appointment to bring my puppy in for shots and got in at a very convenient time. The location is a good one, downtown Ann Arbor and was easy to find. It's a small office and I was greeted immediately upon entrance. The staff loved little Newman and even went to get another worker there who loves bulldog puppies. Newman was well spoiled on his first visit. The vet, Dr. Shana, was very good with Newman. She looked him over, tested his muscles, ears, eyes and mouth. Then she gave him his shot and offered recommendations for the next few weeks. Dr. Shana also made sure that Newman could see me during the exam as he gets nervous when I'm not around. We have another appointment in May and are both looking forward to it! I give this vet high praises! read more

My fiancee and I moved here and given the fact that the stray cat we took in had never been in to see a vet, we decided it was time after some careful searching. I went with AVS because of the good Yelp reviews (and after an unpleasant experience at the Banfield in PetSmart), and I'm sure glad I did! We didn't see Dr. Bill, unfortunately, because he was getting ready to start a surgery. But Dr. Maja was still extremely friendly and accommodating and extremely gentle with our cat. If you own a pet and live near Ann Arbor, you need to take your pets here. Even just listening to Dr. Bill talk to another pet owner about her dog's upcoming surgery made my fiancee, who tends to be weary of vets, felt reassured and think that we'd taken our cat to the right place.It's a small, modest office, but that means you're not paying for unnecessary frills like you would at some of the other places in town, which was good for my fiancee and I, as we're living on a grad student budget. We got a microchip, exam, FeLV test, and two vaccines for around $130. I think I'd pay twice that at the Ann Arbor Cat Clinic. Bravo, AVS! read more

We were really happy with our experience with Dr. Courtney Cutright at Affordable Vet Services. We are new in town and wanted to find a vet that was close, but more importantly, a place where we felt comfortable and welcome. I went into a couple vet offices, and brought treats with me, for positive reinforcement - AFS were welcoming, allowed us to come behind the counter to use the scale and give treats (and some pets) and then gave us an informational pamphlet on their pricing. I felt comfortable, so we scheduled our first appointment. I was impressed with Dr. Cutright's thorough physical exam skills - she took her time, was very gentle, used a soothing and upbeat voice and demonstrated that she clearly respects animals. We also liked the tech that checked us in. I'm definitely a fan and will update my review after a few more visits (I'm assuming it will be upgraded to 5 stars 'as good as it gets' but it's too early to tell since a vet is really a long-term relationship type thing). My two kittens, my partner, and I, completely lucked out living near this vet. Our fur babies are in the best hands with the veterinarians here. You can feel how much the staff truly love and care for your animals. We've only brought our kittens in for their initial check-ups and vaccines, there's no reason for the staff to remember them. Two days before we moved across the country, I noticed a dime-sized red bite on my pup's tummy, which turned into a ring. So what did I do? I freaked out and called a few places around town and felt a sense of relief when I was able to make an appointment with AVS the next day. I normally take my pup to the shelter, but since I knew its a bit of a wait to get my pup into the vet at the shelter, I choose AVS based on the yelp reviews. When I called a few places, prior to making my appointment here, I was told by receptionist that my dog had ringworm and to basically not have any contact with him. So of course, I started to freak out even more and decided to take any item my pup touched to the laundromat in the middle of the night. BUT, when I called AVS, the receptionist didn't make any conclusions or suggested that I have no contact. When we arrived, it took awhile for the receptionist to acknowledge us, but once we checked in, we were taken back to a room with our pup. After being examined by the tech, the vet arrived and assured us that ringworm is rare in dogs and used a backlight to exam if it was. Thankfully it ended up NOT being ringworm and the vet sent us home with antibiotics. I really REALLY appreciated the vet not suggesting or pushing us to do any un-neccesary treatments or test and being able to see us on such a short notice. I'm giving it three stars because the cost of the visit was more than I expected and the staff weren't as friendly as the staff at the shelter. read more

The staff and doctors here are absolutely fantastic. I was referred here in 2007, and have been loyal ever since. I have probably referred 20+ people (and their pets!) to this vet clinic. Dr. Bill is amazing. He is incredibly knowledgeable. As a result, he's able to give diagnoses without all the expensive (and often unnecessary) laboratory testing. Don't get me wrong, he will do them if you'd like; however, he tries very hard to make sure you understand what the testing can/cannot do for you. He's never made me feel rushed, and has answered every question that I have ever had...even if that meant calling me back after doing some research. I would be a lifetime client if I didn't have to move out of the state!! :( read more

The vet was incompetent. I took my cat to this place because she started to lose weight all the sudden. The vet was unconcerned about the weight loss as if it was normal, and said everything was fine. I was prescribed some antibiotics without any diagnosis. Fast forward to two months. My cat had terrible lung tumor and had to be put down in another emergency animal hospital. If you care about your cat, do not come to this place. The staffs are friendly, sure, but I came here for medical care, which was not provided. read more

We could not be happier with Affordable Vet Services. Their clinic is large, clean, and can accommodate many pets at once. With the growing practice, you may occasionally encounter days when no appointments are available, but they will gladly overbook if the pet needs urgent medical attention. Every time my pet needed medical attention, they were able to accommodate her. We have been very pleased with the care provided by Dr. Bill, but I now want to share an incredible story about Dr. Shana and the reason why I will go to no other place but Affordable Vet Services for my dog. Recently, my 4 year old mini schnauzer was diagnosed with a rare liver disease. If it wasn't for Dr. Shana, it would have gone undiagnosed. On our first visit with Dr. Shana, she had read all the previous medical notes dating back to when she was a few months old. She's had a lot of benign medical issues in the past. When my dog developed another non-specific symptom, Dr. Shana knew that something wasn't right. Because of her thoroughness, she came up with a few diagnoses that explained her current and her past symptoms. Previously, all other symptoms were viewed as single entities, and for the first time, Dr. Shana was able to put everything together and look at the bigger picture. She even researched her symptoms in medical resources and educated me on what she found out. We sent some initial blood tests, which came back weakly positive. I think most vets would have stopped there since we had a positive result, but Dr. Shana also felt that the constellation of symptoms could be explained by another diagnosis. I'm so thankful that we ordered the second set of labs because they came back strongly positive, which ultimately made the diagnosis. If this diagnosis was missed and untreated, my schnauzer could have had a very short life. Dr. Shana recommended all the right medications and referred us to Michigan State University for surgical consultation. When I went to MSU, the doctors were so impressed with the diagnostic strategy and care provided by Dr. Shana. They literally said, "it's pretty rare to be referred here with such complete workup and medical management." My dog ultimately required surgery without complications. When Dr. Shana received the discharge paper work from MSU, she double checked to make sure all the medications were correctly ordered and dosed. I think most doctors would rely on other doctors to order the right medications, but Dr. Shana double checked to make sure. She actually found an error in the dose of one medication and knew of a better alternative medication for another. She called MSU and spoke to the doctors there the day of discharge, and ultimately corrected 2 of the 4 medications prescribed by MSU. Dr. Shana also called me about 1-2 times a week during this difficult time over a 1 month period to check up on my dog and I. Even when my dog was in the care of another veterinary facility, she made sure that we were doing ok. Dr. Shana has dedicated so much of her time to take care of my dog. Her intelligence, attention to details, kind personality, superb communication skills, and willingness to go one step further to provide exceptional care for my mini schnauzer and I is truly impressive. I am forever thankful for her service and so glad that a place like Affordable Vet Services exists near my home! read more

back in november i brought in my cat who was extremely sick. the ran some tests and prescribed medication. eventually we had to put him down. we chose to do an individual cremation. cost 160$. i was out of town in december when they were ready. i called and informed them. they said it was fine. it turns out they sent my bill even though it was paid to a debt collector. this is on my credit score. 1- how do they have my social security number? 2- it's paid. the most frustrating part is that i have called everyday for two weeks to speak to kelly "so called office manager" she is never in. she never returns my calls. i finally figured out her husband owns it. they are in breach of federa credit laws. they dont care that they have negatively affected my credit. please do yourself a favor go somewhere else!!!!!! read more

How can we say anything but amazing things about AVS? When we first adopted our puppy, we weren't quite sure where to take her. A friend recommended AVS, and while we were a little hesitant ("affordable" can sometimes have pejorative connotations, afterall), we trusted his word completely. Shortly after arriving for our first visit, all concerns were tossed out the window. The entire staff is friendly, knowledgeable, gentle, informative, and helpful. Our dog has no nerves about visiting them, and neither do we. The fact that their prices are indeed affordable, and that they'll often do an extra thing or two for her while she's there (at no cost), speaks to how dedicated they are to giving first-rate care without gouging their patrons - they certainly are not the "Walmart" of vet services, skimping on quality in favor of a cheap deal (which was our concern!). We wouldn't hesitate to recommend AVS to ANYONE looking for quality veterinary care. They've been a lifesaver for us through our first 6 months of having a puppy, and we're looking forward to a long, long relationship! read more

I had read the awesome reviews listed and was crossing my fingers for Bill or Shana as our vet for the appointment-- instead, we had Courtney. As I peruse through the negative reviews, some of the descriptions of her demeanor seem to match what we experienced. She was not terrible, but very lacking in communication skills, which really put me off. As I'm describing my concerns, she seemed to be listening but it became clear that she was feigning it as she literally cut me off to speak to her tech about equipment parts. Then never regained attention to what I was hoping was a conversation. This happened separately, twice. So I took another opportunity later on in the appointment to try to explain my concerns but was left with Courtney blankly staring at me with no response. Then she literally just turned away. It was very bizarre. Overall, she was not addressing me with direct answers on what I could and should be doing and expecting regarding these concerns and I felt like I was the one that had to stress possible situations to drag any answers out of her. She seemed uninterested in the appointment overall. She stressed that her next appointment was getting there, but at least squeezed in the few vaccinations/heartworm test I was asking for at the end of our appointment, but we waited in the waiting room. Maybe I am expecting too much bedside manner from a veterinarian. But more than anything, her communication and listening skills were clearly and plainly an issue, and I can't help but feel like those are important things. The receptionist was extremely nice and helpful. I saw many happy pets & owners going in & out while I waited in the lobby for an hour. I would return but would probably request a different vet. read more

I have been using Affordable Vet since 2009 - First Dr Bill is by far the best vet I have ever seen - and I have lived in 9 states with many dogs. Dr Bill has semi retired but the staff remains fantastic. New digs are also very nice- although I really liked the old building - and parking on weekends can be difficult with the swim club. In an emergency Affordable uses a 24 hour clinic on Jackson rd - and they also are compassionate, friendly and competent. read more

I switched to this place after a horrible horrible horrible experience with Animal Kingdom, after a million friends and colleagues swooned over themselves about this place, and I could NOT be happier. The British fellow who saw my 13 year tortoiseshell cat was so gentle with her-- within seconds of entering the room, his hands were on her, petting her, scratching her ears, making her feel at ease (this was the OPPOSITE of what my cat experienced the final time she went to Animal Kingdom). What was truly remarkable though was the lengths to which the vet went to make *sure* I knew what was going on with my cat's teeth (we were there to get them checked out, and have a follow-up dental cleaning), and so patiently answered any and all of my questions. There were helpful charts on the wall to show me exactly how far my cat's "peritonitis" had progressed. I can't say enough good things about this place. Also, all the crazy cat and dog people (you know the type of people I am talking about) in my life RAVE about this place, so it must be doing something right. read more

I make it a policy to post only positive reviews but I think it important that I share the not-so-great experience that I had at Affordable Vet Services. When my dad adopted a dog who wanted to eat our barncat, I brought the cat home with me. AVS helped me get him vaccinated and clear of fleas, but the poor guy was still vomiting every day. We worked by trial and error for some months to try to solve the problem: a steroid shot, low-allergen food, the works, but the problem persisted. After 4 visits to AVS, I took the cat over to Animal Kingdom, where the first thing they did was to test for parasites - and they found 4 different unwelcome guests in my cat's belly. I feel it was a pretty major oversight on AVS' part to never run a test for parasites. It could have been such a simple fix and saved my cat and me months of sickness. read more

Prices are obviously great, but the vets are really top notch. They are so compassionate and patient with my animals, I really value that. I also appreciate how easy it is to get an appointment here and use their online pet portal system to manage my pet's health care. I usually don't like to write a review that will simply repeat what other reviewers have said, but I have to contribute to the online praise for Dr. Bill. I visited with my Chihuahua-terrier for the first time last night. My dog is notoriously bad with strangers, especially men, but Dr. Bill had her eating out of his hand within 1 minute of entering the room. She didn't complain at all during the exam or vaccinations. Like other reviewers stated, he gave us all of the information we needed to understand her health condition, and then explained what was worth spending money on and what wasn't. The final price was much more reasonable than any other vet I have visited in other towns. Dr. Bill is the vet to see! read more

Very friendly and knowledgeable staff and vets here! Easy to make appointments by calling or making appointments by using the free online portal to manage your pet's care. Dr. Paul is great! I've been taking my animals here for years and have always felt both myself and more importantly my animals were treated well by all staff. Throughout COVID I've had to take my animals in much more than usual and have seen how hard the staff has been working to provide efficient, quality care and compassion despite the chaos-causing safety protocols they've had to put in place during the pandemic. Their support and compassion to me as a pet parent who, in a very short time had a pet diagnosed with a scary medical issue and then having to put another pet down a short time later, has truly made such a difference to me. Price-wise I don't have much to go on in comparison to other vets, but they've always seemed relatively fair to me (all vets are expensive, that's just part of having pets!). Overall, my experience with Affordable over the years has been good and I would recommend their services over pretty much any other vets I've had experience with! read more

Dr. Bill is amazing -- easily the best vet we've ever encountered. We just had a lump removed from our senior dog, and Dr. Bill took the time to explain everything clearly and honestly. He recognizes that we love our dog and goes the extra mile to make sure we know that he is in good hands. These folks are wonderful. A great old-fashioned neighborhood vet giving great care at affordable prices. You're not paying for a fancy facility, so the prices are wonderfully reasonable, usually beating out the Humane Society. But there is no compromise on quality of care. Dr. Bill is an accurate diagnostician and skilled surgeon, and he and Kelly both have a great "bedside manner" with the animals and the humans. They don't try to upsell you on all kinds of tests and procedures, but are sensitive to your budget as well as the well-being of your pet, and will talk over the options and help you decide on the best course of action. (Other vets I've tried can be pretty relentless in pushing costly services.) They've cared for our 2 pugs and boxer through surgeries, injuries, and kennel cough as well as routine vaccinations, and we couldn't be happier that we found them. read more

Dr. Bill is great! As new dog owners, we're so happy to have a great vet! I like that they cut out the fluff so they don't have to charge as much. Dr. Bill also just saved us $300 in unnecessary procedures for our dog (that the animal hospital recommended)! He talks SUPER fast though- it's really hard to get all of what he's saying. So my strategy is to say "ok, to sum up, I think I heard you say..." and make sure i got it all right! I wish he talked slower because he'll be our vet for life- he's great!! read more

Closed early today without any notice. We showed up as they were turning the lights off, made eye contact from outside, and they still left out the back door. I have been been taking my dog and cats to affordable vet care for a few years now. Our vet is a wonderful, caring woman. I have no complaints about her. On our last visit, the vet examined my cat and discussed the possibilities of what might be causing her symptoms and suggested a plan of care. After the vet left the exam room the vet assistant came in to trim my cats claws. My cat was on the floor laying down. The assistant came into the room, reached down, and yanked my cat up by the scruff of her neck. My cat weighs 18lbs. Being lifted up this way without supporting the weight of her body was painful and terrifying for her. She howled out in pain and then urinated on herself when the assistant slammed her onto the exam table. It's heartbreaking to me that someone you are trusting to care for your pet, abuses your pet. She is a sweet, docile cat that did nothing to deserve such deplorable treatment. I told her to stop, and left. Please be warned that the woman that did this (vet assistant) is still working there. read more
