A creek running next to our site in the Pelican lot

The Denver area is surprisingly lacking in the number of RV parks. Our daughter lives north of Denver and when we come into town with our RV this is about as close as we can get and it's a 30 minute drive. 40-45 minutes to Denver. The full hookup sites are on the south side of the park and there are no trees for shade and it lacks grass. The north side, where we stayed this time, has shade trees and grass but there are no full hook up sites. The park is clean and well maintained. There were a lot of people fishing in the ponds. The staff working at the gate were friendly and the pricing is fair. You do, however, have to pay $10 extra, DAILY, to even be in the park (on top of your RV rental cost).

St. Vrain State Park is a multipurpose state park. For Longmont, Firestone, and neighboring residents, this makes for a short drive to an area with lots of birds if you are interested in birding. We've seen so many birds such as bald eagles, osprey, ducks, pelicans, blue heron, geese and many smaller birds. Some have been seen nesting and we've seen chicks in the spring as well. I pay for state park entrance with my annual car registration for $29/year. This gives us access to parks like this, which are $10/entry without the pass. I have come here to walk, fish, and observe/photograph birds. There are plenty of walking paths. The park posts information on which fish can be found in each reservoir/pond along with fishing regulations. Make sure to have your fishing license. You can launch small boats and kayaks, but keep in mind the size of the reservoirs/ponds. I would not recommend trying to swim here as it is not allowed & the water likely has giardia. Muskrats also call this area home. There are also some cute prairie dogs in the plains to enjoy. Some people camp here in tents or RVs but that's not something I've done or need to do, so I can't offer or review that perspective. Picnic tables and restrooms are available to visitors. Check the park website for seasonal closures and hours of operation. Yes, this state park is near major roads. You will see and hear traffic but it is not terrible. It is similar to other local open space walking paths. You may also see/hear the parks neighbors who have goats, chickens, & roosters. It goes without saying, if you are looking for more silence, you'll need to take a drive to a more secluded location outside of the city. The park rangers are kind and helpful. Thank you for maintaining the park!

This State Park is more like 2 different parks in one. Although it doesn't have a popular draw like a reservoir, it is a great place to bird watch! There are two distinct places to camp. One is the southern campgrounds. They are newer and many have FHU. The drawback is it is louder, closer to the highway and relatively undeveloped. The older campgrounds are on the north end of the park. Paved and shady, these sites are the ones you want! We were in #023. A super-long pull through! The only drawback is they are electric only. Shower house was new and was free!

This park is pristine! So clean. One of the best showers I've ever taken. Make sure you bring quarters because it's all the shower takes and it's .75 for the first 4 minutes. I was able to have a fire as well. If you're near the mallard pond you'll need some mosquito spray. The only drawback is the very evident highway noise. You won't feel like you're in the wilderness but the amenities make up for the sound.

Great place for first-timers and shakeouts.

One star each for: an easy drive from Denver, many sites with beautiful water views, clean facilities and an excellent spot for camper / RV shakeouts. The only drawback, and it's a big one, is the proximity to I-25. Traffic is loud and you can see the gas station sign. So, if you want the wilderness experience, along with peace, quiet and bears, do not come here! It's that easy. Look at Flatiron Reservoir or Carter Lake if you want a quick trip but the more quintessential camping experience. St. Vrain was our first trip with the new pop-up. Pad was paved and level, so setup was pretty easy. We were very close to a water spigot, vault toilets and just down the way from spotless coin showers with fantastic hot water. Our site overlooked a tranquil pond and the neighbors were pretty friendly (one had a barking dog, but it wasn't constant). Older gentleman next to us even provided a few tips on backing the camper into the spot. It was obvious we were noobs! It was actually reassuring to have stores and fast food and Starbucks nearby in case we had issues with our camper. Overall, this was a great first trip and very relaxing. I even took a nap! While we plan to try as many campgrounds as we can get reservations at, this is the perfect backup for quick, off-season getaways.

St. Vrain offers plenty of RV options, and well maintained trails that loop around the many different ponds and lakes in the park. Unfortunately, it is pretty close to I-25, so you do get traffic noise throughout much of the park. If you're a Coloradoan looking for a beautiful walk or hike through one of our many state parks, this probably isn't the best bet. Most of the ponds/lakes are small, and some seem man-made. The walks are fine, and you can park centrally and connect most of the trails to one another. You'll be walking on the road from time to time, but there isn't much traffic. Just go in with expectations commensurate with this particular park - views won't be great, but the trails are well maintained and easy.

A bald eagle watching the ice fishing.

Super easy to get to here from NOCO (where we are) or Denver. Located right off the highway, there's a bit of noise, but it didn't stop us from enjoying the winter views. This is my pick for eagle watching - we've seen bald and golden eagles here, and up fairly close. Our dogs love to walk around the lake, we are typically the only ones out here, so it's rather peaceful. In the winter, you can watch ice fishing - and perched in the trees, the bald eagles watch too to see what the latest catch is. If you're into camping, there's lots of lake front spots to stop and spend a night or two. The rangers here are super friendly and very informative. It's a small park in comparison to some of the others in Colorado, but if you haven't seen an eagle, and are eager to get up close - this is the spot.

Great campground for big rigs. Large private spots. Half are full hookup, other half electric only. If you need grocery, restaurants, plenty within 10-15 minutes. Many ponds to fish with a license, state park. So purchase a $70 annual parks pass, good at all Colorado State parks. Hosts keep the sites up extremely well, tidy and clean. Hot pay showers, no ice, no laundry, no pool. I recommend this place. Very affordable for Colorado. Reserve online!!

Very clean and well managed, when we arrived the fire pit was empty and clean and the rock area by the pit looked freshly raked. Pad for trailer was concrete and nearly level which made setup a breeze. Our spot was on Pelican Pond right across from the freeway so it was noisy. There are lots of birds and nice flat trails. Great for a quick getaway but not really camping like I'm used to, we prefer to be further from signs of a city.

The north part of this Park is the older, original part of the park. It has water and electric, as well as a building with flushie toilets and "pay for showers". There are also some pit toilets in the area. The park is littered with ponds all over everywhere for fishing ONLY! No swimming, not even your dogs, as it has a large amount of fishing line and hooks in it, unfortunately. Please recycle your fishing line using the PVC piping stands that are available. There a many trails around the ponds that you can walk; as well as, the roads, etc. There is no gate at the main entrance; however, I never felt unsafe here. The south side of the park is newer and has full hook ups. The pads for RVs are cement and level. There are flushy toilets in the south side of the park, but no buildings for showers. It's all set up very nice. The people who work in the park, Rangers and Volunteers are all very helpful. The only draw back is Hwy 25! That highway is a major thoroughfare from Denver to north CO and Wyoming. The hum of the highway is constant, 24/7. So I would recommend getting a spot as far west in the park that you can. If you are only passing through for 1 night, any spot will do as you can run your A/C. We stayed there for 1 week in our motorhome and currently are in Gillette, WY. The silence is Golden. My disclaimer: "there is no such thing as the perfect RV campground/park. Do your research and pick the one that best meets your needs". Also note, you need to plan your trips farther in advance as recreation vehicles are being produced by the thousands each year and RV parks/campgrounds are being created at a minimum, if any

We were visiting our daughter and her family in Frederick CO St Vrain State Park is just 10 minutes from their home. The Park is beautiful great place to bird watch. Each spot comes with a shaded picnic table. The only downside is the freeway is pretty close and you can hear it from your campsite

Ok so it's close to the highway but fan drowns out traffic. For the most part never know. Full hook ups, super friendly and helpful host. Clean, really clean. Lots of trails around the many lakes. Will be back. Great for a quick getaway.

View to the west from site 70.

It's close to the highway but a very nice and clean state park. Two of large loops seperate camping from electric only to full hookups. The full hookups area has very few trees but the spaces tend to be somewhat separated. The electric only side has some trees and a river that flows thru the area. Fishing is nice there are plenty of lakes to do it. Wildlife is nice as well, lots of birds to watch while relaxing. Road noise dies out in the evening bit really depends on your spot and the proximity to the highway. Very clean and proximity to Denver make is a nice place to camp.

Kanemoto Park

My sole purpose for coming to Kanemoto Park was just to see the Japanese Pagoda & Gate…read more At the entrance to the Tower Of Compassion, which is the real name of the Pagoda, stands a red torii gate. There's a tree that is so big that it partially obscures the view of the tower itself if you're standing in front of the torii gate. The tower looks like a traditional Japanese Temple. It was built in 1973. It has 5 stories with each representing the attributes of compassion which are Love, Empathy, Understanding, Gratitude of all Things, and Giving Selflessly of Oneself. You can't enter the Pagoda. Not sure if there's even anything to see, but it might be cool to just look inside! Cool Fact: Longmont City Council has designated this Tower Of Compassion a Local Historical Landmark. In the area in front of the Tower is the Kanemoto Memorial Cherry Tree Grove, where there's a good number of Cherry Trees. I don't think these cherries are edible. This 7-acre park was donated to Longmont by the Kanemoto family in 1966. Side note: This family also gifted 10 more acres of land for other facilities like a Fire Station, Buddhist temple, Episcopal Church, Elementary School and the St. Vrain Greenway. Besides the Tower Of Compassion, this park has a nice playground, activity pool, basketball court, soccer/playing Fields, sand volleyball, & adult exercise equipment. On the cement path leading to the Pool & Tower of Compassion, and just outside of the restrooms, there's a large Dragonfly metal decoration. I love dragonflies, so it was a nice sight! The Left Hand Creek runs alongside this part of the path. It only takes a few minutes to walk to this tower. It's worth a visit if you're in the area. However, I made it a point to stop by on my way to another destination while visiting the area.
