This review is for the actual thrift store: I brought a bag of clothes along on a road trip to drop off, so this store was entirely happenstance. Of course, I had to take a peek inside. Like most St. Vincent De Paul stores, this one was sizable: furniture, books & media, jewelry, housewares, and clothes. The good: Solid potential home decor finds. There was an antique butter churned (the glass with the churn in the cap) selling for $60: I later found similar ones in Jacksonville and Ashland prices at $120 and $245. I ended up finding a scuffed up Hawaiian koa bowl for a few dollars: Koa is rare and priced accordingly, so that was the steal of the trip. The bad: True, this had been an especially sweltering few days, but there's a strong smell of funk (sweat) hanging around the front of the store. They need to do a better job of requiring clean clothes and do a thorough sweep. Donations: Good parking, drop-off is easy although they will put out signs before closing rejecting certain donations if they're too full up, so call a short time ahead. read more

Their last inspection score can be viewed at http://www.co.jackson.or.us/files/restaurantinspections.pdf and was 73/5 70 is failing. They had 5 critical violations found in the last inspection. I would think twice before eating there again unless you don't mind eating from food and dinner ware others have handle with dirty hands. Or don't mind eating in an environment fraught with safety issues. I was served my meal on a broken tray 10 times. It is known to some that as many as 25 such trays have been served. You sit down for a peaceful meal and staring you in the face is this fuzz filled crack in the midst of your tray. No big deal things happen I'll just turn it in they surely want to know about such things. I get another tray and it's fine. Next day same thing, broken tray, replaced, third day is just chocked full of dejavu it happened all over again. A fourth time and my minds going gee these folks are singling me out for this. I'm a bit excited ,they get on the defensive, I ask for this tray it is orange and I like Orange but more important is this one was broken nearly half its width across. Were not talking paper plates this stuff is tough Melamine. I asked if they were watching for them as they came out of the dishwasher. At one point they sat down and did a full inspection of all the trays. But I kept finding one here one there. The cracks were barely visible but I know exactly where to look. After reporting 10 trays I developed a knack at finding this pesky crack. Several fire code violations. Yes I reported that they were refusing to unlock doors to a fire exit on the weekends. Now I can see that has been fixed from the road with my camera. All this has lead to my being banned from their establishment. For making it a safer place for both guests and volunteers alike. Check your local health department before you choose to eat at one of these. I can not believe a dishwasher would handle clean utensils after unloading dirty ones from the dishwasher without washing their hands but yuk it happens here. Kind of like picking your nose over the soup kettle. Volunteers aren't supposed to eat while serving but they do. A few actually do eat in the dining room as they are supposed to do. My last day there I was called aside by the acting President and was told I was being banned from the premises because I raised my voice. This store is a well organized and prices are reasonable. If you decide you want to donate items to drop off then one should call ahead of time. Today although their drop off hrs were posted until 3:00 pm when we got there there were signs that they were not accepting donations. We had to go elsewhere because we finally got the car all packed up and ready and needed to drop off the items. Was dissapointing. read more

It would have been 5 stars, but they've raised their prices far too much. After all, it's a thrift store. Thrift store customers are of two kinds. 1 - that's what they can afford 2 - looking for the thrill of finding a treasure Things this year have started bearing stickers with the brand or maker marks, with prices I can pay retail. They are removing the backs on pictures to see if they are "real" and if so, up goes the price. Just because a crock is Roseville pottery does not warrant asking $25! That's why it's been there for a couple of months! Yesterday there was an "as is" vase for $3.00. A vase with a chip out better be some nice collectible maker, right? Nope, it was Harry and David! They'd sell more if they stopped looking "values" up online. And one of their "security guards?" Makes me uncomfortable. He's kind of creepy and watches the young women. Plus, you can see him specifically approach certain people, let's say he racially profiles... read more

This hasn't been mentioned, and should be made clear: The St. Vincent De Paul dining room is 100% free, and has NO payed employees! The facility is run by volunteers who cook and serve the food provided. Anyone who is hungry is welcome into the dining room, and is served a hearty lunch - NO QUESTIONS ASKED. The volunteers give out good portions of food, and before the dining room closes you are allowed to go through for seconds if there is enough food. That being said, this is no five-star lunch, and some of the entrees and sides are questionable at best, but you really cant complain about a free lunch. I know on Saturdays free clothing, shoes, books, and sometimes magazines are put in the dining room for those who need it. Fruits, veggies, and other food are also occasionally put out for the taking depending on availability. On Fridays the food pantry is open. I don't know what the previous reviewer's problem is. If he doesn't like the *free* lunch he is receiving, maybe he should go somewhere else. It makes me sad that SVDP's resources are being wasted on someone who doesn't appreciate them. Four stars for the SVDP dining room! Where you can go for a free lunch and friendly service - 100% run by volunteers! No questions asked! An impressive operation by any standard. read more

Absolutely love this place. Organized and easy to find what you're looking for. No junk... good quality used merchandise. The items are clean and priced very reasonably... AND they have just about everything you'd be interested in buying used. Clothing, glassware, silverware, dishes, furniture, lamps, electronics, mattresses, pictures, window accessories, bedding, toys, shoes, boots... They also have plenty of people to check you out. Never much of a wait. Easy to drop off donations too... although they sometimes are full, so be sure you give them a call before you visit. read more
