The only thing different is that there is more homework and the lunch is different. I am learning things already that I have learned in lower grades at my old public school. The real reason I am giving my school one star is because there is a lot of bullying going on. Involving me and many other students. I am the type of person to go to the staff to tell about bullying such as the guidance counselor, principal, and the dean of students. I went many times in the past year but nothing was ever solved. I have gone maybe 3-4 times this year and nothing is being solved. This year about me and other students getting bullied. Last year my mother called and that's when they actually handled it. If you are bringing your child to Norfolk collegiate for no bullying your gonna get a lot of it. And if your getting bullied bad the school will do nothing about it. They put online that they have 0% bullying, but that is not the truth. The school acts as if there is no bullying but two years a lot of kids were physically bullied by someone such as getting pushed into lockers and the school has covered it up. So I recommend to not bring your child to Norfolk collegiate because it is not a good environment to keep your child happy.

My child started KG in 2023 & it was a total nightmare. Most teacher's do not communicate with the parent(s). Regular Education classes are allowed to have children with IEP's however, only 1/3 of the class can have an IEP. In KG there were a total of 19 students & 17 of them had IEP's ,my child included. This year she started 1st grade & she HAD an AMAZING teacher who went above & beyond for all of her students but after 3.5 months, the principal decided to move her for no real reason to 4th grade. The New SPED teacher is a Liar & has turned off my child's FM system while testing more than once (my child is tested 1 on 1 due to her IEP & She's deaf) The SPED teacher verbally abuses the children (calling names like dumb & stupid) The principal does nothing & never gets back to you when you have an issue with the school or staff member(s). They do not follow IEP's. They try to sweap everything under the rug. There are a few Great teacher's & staff member's but they get bullied by the SPED teacher & the Principal. In order to provide the best public education, The principal & New SPED teacher need to go ASAP!!! They need a new principal who actually cares about ALL the students & the SPED teacher needs to go as well. There is so much more but PLEASE don't send your child there!!! I am currently fighting the IEP team to get a fair education for my child & all the other's children who attend this school. Good teacher's & staff get punished while the horrible teacher's get to keep their job without any consequences, write ups ,etc. I will never stop fighting for my child & the other children. Please, save yourself the time & energy & find a better school!!!

Ed Timlin, who later was the long time Principal at Arrowhead Elementary, was Assistant Principal. They were an awesome team. The staff & teachers were top notch. One couldn't have asked for better. Parental involvement, teacher & staff care, safety, nurturing, a location steeped in the history that was the beginning of the English colonies, and classmates who are eager to excel & learn.... This and more is what you will find at Thoroughgood Elementary.

It is my opinion that this is one of the premier city schools, but am I being subjective in a 5 star rating of where my children attend. I do think that I am being fair and I will provide some details about the school, it's history so as to back up my rating. I will also provide stats on performance which is what ultimately determines a schools success. The school is named after Adam Thoroughgood the city's founding colonist who was an indentured servant that rose to becoming one of Virginia's earliest burgesses and later, a member of the Governor's Council. In 1635, he was granted 5,360 acres in return for the transportation of himself, his wife and 105 persons. One of his "head rights" Augustine Warner, is of particular significance. He became the great-great-grand father of President George Washington. The land that the present day school and Thoroughgood neighborhood sets on is part of that original land grant by the King of England which makes this area so special. The current Principal at TES is Dr. Cheryl Zigrang in her 14th year at this position. She is the backbone to this place of learning for children K-5. Her caring attitude and compassionate attitude is contagious throughout the caring staff that she manages. Her high standards of academics and consistent utilization of the kids remembering a number of rules and manners has elevated this school of 700 students into the "Best of Virginia Beach". Dr. Z has been offered promotions to administration and turned them down as her calling is at the school she one day hopes to retire in. The building itself is one of the cities oldest, constructed in the mid 1950's. Even though old it is very well maintained by long time janitor Mr. Harold Lawrence. It is over due for a new build out and the School Board recently approved a time table of 2016-2018 for a new TES. It will be put in the present day ball field while keeping the current facility in operation through construction. How about the performance of Thoroughgood. Well let's start out with saying it is a fully accredited school in the state of Virginia. It also has received the 2012 Governor's Award for Education Excellence numerous times and is without a doubt one of the cities top schools. Of course the benchmark the state of Virginia uses is Standard of Learning, or SOL. Consistently TES is not only one of the top schools in our city, but the state of Virginia. A snap shot of one piece of data, the 5th grade writing exam. Going back to 2005 and every year to 2012 Thoroughgood has exceeded district and state standards, thus one of the reasons for the Governors Award on a annual basis. When I say this this school is awesome, it's not just lip service. We had one of our children at a pricy private school in the area and discovered this is a great value, offers just as much challenge and is safe from of the schenanigan's that other schools are plagued with. Anyone reading this review and unsure about how to go about obtaining more info it is easy. Call the school and arrange a tour that will be conducted most likely by Dr. Z herself. We love our TES Flying Seagulls.

The adults and parents take themselves too seriously and are the kind of adults that peaked in high school and think they have the authority to do and say whatever they want. The teachers love to embarrass students based on learning abilities and make sure nothing stays discreet. The school does absolutely nothing in the way of bullying besides some lousy posters. If you are getting bullied in The Williams school best believe your bully will not get any punishments or long term consequences. The kids there are also horrible and will shun anybody out of their circle who doesn't fit their requirements. Going there feels like an overpriced cult that you can't seem to get out of, and once you do you can't even remember why you went there in the first place.

When she took control of the school she brought along a teacher named Mrs. Pinner. We all hated her. She has a way of teaching that just shows she doesn't know what she is talking about. Once I had to tell her how to do an assignment. I found this absolutely outrageous. I also found that the way they would discipline was not the standard. Students can expect to get in trouble for being too loud on the stairs when really we are just talking. Students can expect to get locked out of a classroom even if your previous teacher let you out late. These two things can be excused as they aren't on a regular basis however the new management is awful. In conclusion Dr. Hedrick and Mrs. Pinner have got to go.

However, my knowledge of the school is that it has a solid reputation. The portion of the school which houses the theater is definitely newer than the other portion of the campus. My guess is within 10 years, but this is only a guess. The parking lot and surrounding area where I parked was well maintained. Landscaping was fine, but nothing special in my opinion. Upon walking into the lobby of the theater I was immediately impressed by it's simple elegance. Not huge, but presented very well with a nice size chandelier in the lobby. There is an area to serve refreshments at intermission which worked out well later in the evening. Restrooms were adjacent to the left. I found them new, or updated unsure. They were clean, had soap and paper towels. Upon walking in the theater I was awe struck by the beauty of the venue. Seating for around 350 on red fold down chairs which proved very comfortable for the performance. Natural wood surrounds stage opening. Although the stage was not as wide as larger facilities it worked pretty good. However, the cast of "Honk" was somewhat crowded. Lighting and sound seemed appropriate the smaller theater. Again, review is NOT for the school only the theater. I really enjoyed myself and the Norfolk Collegiate School theater. Our family had a great time and really enjoyed the show too!
