There is clearly no selection process when admitting students as seen throughout their behavior's and actions. Teachers bombard you with homework everyday that doesnt help learning especially when it takes away from your sleep. Finally Christianity is pushed in your face constantly when its clear over 75% of the student base dont have any of the basic "morals" supposedly a Christian would follow. I could go on and on about favoritism towards certain students from the staff and administration, neglect towards issues between students, and more the list goes on and on. There is a lot that needs to be fixed at Hawaii Baptist Academy and its showing with the enrollment rates being at a all time low.

They both love their teachers and I have been amazed at the types of projects and activities the teachers create. I have a master's in education, and I see cutting edge best practices frequently. At the same time, I see HBA's commitment to the whole child--building character and social-emotional skills. Several of my daughters' classmates have parents who went to HBA K-12, and after their own experience, they wouldn't send their kids anywhere else. Now I see why. It has been a game changer for our girls, and it is truly a God-send to our family.

As a fellow alumni, I remember loving the school from its dedicated teachers and faculty to academic excellence. I have the best memories growing up while attending St. John Vianney School Kailua and am thrilled my two children have the opportunity as well. This is still the best pre-school and elementary school in Kailua with an extraordinary principal, Mrs. DeMello, and exceptional Admin Assistant, Mrs. Chee, with their dedication and commitment to excellence. My children started attending here since pre-school at three years old and are currently in kindergarten and second grade. I have seen their confidence and love for learning flourish. Their progress and growth have been remarkable. Not only does St. John Vianney School Kailua have top-notch academics, values-based education, but they also instill a premier Catholic education that is of importance to my faith and family values. Furthermore, they have phenomenal support from the church and community and host an annual fundraising event called "Breakfast with the Bishop" that everyone looks forward to each year. They offer scholarships and financial aid as well as extracurricular activities. I highly recommend St. John Vianney School Kailua for your child's education as it is an invaluable investment. You will feel welcomed and supported here. We are SJV Kailua 'Ohana!

My grandfather, father, nephew, and two brothers-in-law are St. Louis graduates. That means that they belong to "The Brotherhood". I guess it's a good school. My grandfather was a dentist. My father was a Lt. Colonel in the US Air Force and Postmaster of Hickam Air Force Base. One of my brothers-in-law is an engineer. My nephew works at Pearl Harbor. The facilities are well maintained. I've been to The Mamiya Theater and this evening, I went to a graduation celebration at the Clarence T.C. Ching Learning & Technology Center. (The wealthy graduates are generous donors and have buildings named after them... and they have a chance to rent the facilities and host parties for their grandchildren! LOL!) Go Crusaders! One of the school's greatest strengths is its size. The student-to-teacher ratio feels just right--small enough for individualized attention, but large enough to offer a well-rounded experience. I've seen my child both supported when he needs help and challenged to grow academically, which is exactly what we hoped for. Equally important has been the social environment. He has built a strong, close-knit group of friends who I truly believe will remain an important part of his life well beyond school. That sense of belonging and community was something we deeply valued when choosing a school, and it's a big reason he never felt the need to look elsewhere. Like any school, it's not perfect. At times, administrative decisions can take longer than expected. However, I've come to see this as a reflection of the school's thoughtful and compassionate approach--they take the time to carefully consider situations and prioritize what's best for their students rather than rushing to judgment. Overall, we're grateful to be part of a school community that nurtures both academic growth and meaningful relationships. It has been a great fit for our child, and we look forward to the years ahead.

They also do not accomodate students with different learning needs or serious struggles with mental health, barely teach their students and expect them to figure things out on their own. In fact, students there enjoy sexually harrasing other students, physically harming other students, recording innapropriate videos of other students without permission to publicly post online, and shouting sexual, ableist, racist, and sexist slurs at other students. Teachers and other school staff members do not do anything to prevent any of this. In addition, the school lunches are stale, dry, and unhealthy.

Then I transferred to Liholiho Elementary for first grade in 1988 and 1989. Thank goodness for yearbooks, because otherwise I would forget the year. I flunked first grade from Liholiho, and then in 1989 and 1990 I transferred back to Kauluwela for first grade. Though I was born and raised in Honolulu, English is my second language. I knew not my ABCs and I knew not how to read up to that point at Liholiho. I recalled I got pulled out of class at Liholiho where a teacher specialist mostly had me trace pictures. It was at Liholiho that I recalled that my first grade teacher popped in the 1989 Moonwalker VHS for our class to watch. After watching the Moonwalker film at Liholiho and at my family gatherings, my older sibling recorded me beatboxing, scat singing, and singing one of the songs from the Moonwalker film. I was six-years-old then. I still have the Liholiho Elementary picture taken of me on the playground holding an orange baseball bat. I do recall we were given seeds to plant around Liholiho Elementary... I chose the seed that would grow a blue flower. I planted it somewhere around the campus and as I grew older, I remember where I planted those seeds. I now see those blue flowers grown. Today, as an adult, I love to read daily, for fun and enjoyment. I love to write. I also help students with mathematics throughout the state of Hawaii. I also beatbox throughout the state of Hawaii and the world, speaking at conferences, and schools. Liholiho Elementary students were among 300 in attendance when I performed and spoke at the 25th Chevron Honolulu Speech Festival at the McKinley High School Auditorium. -Jason Tom
