Then I transferred to Liholiho Elementary for first grade in 1988 and 1989. Thank goodness for yearbooks, because otherwise I would forget the year. I flunked first grade from Liholiho, and then in 1989 and 1990 I transferred back to Kauluwela for first grade. Though I was born and raised in Honolulu, English is my second language. I knew not my ABCs and I knew not how to read up to that point at Liholiho. I recalled I got pulled out of class at Liholiho where a teacher specialist mostly had me trace pictures. It was at Liholiho that I recalled that my first grade teacher popped in the 1989 Moonwalker VHS for our class to watch. After watching the Moonwalker film at Liholiho and at my family gatherings, my older sibling recorded me beatboxing, scat singing, and singing one of the songs from the Moonwalker film. I was six-years-old then. I still have the Liholiho Elementary picture taken of me on the playground holding an orange baseball bat. I do recall we were given seeds to plant around Liholiho Elementary... I chose the seed that would grow a blue flower. I planted it somewhere around the campus and as I grew older, I remember where I planted those seeds. I now see those blue flowers grown. Today, as an adult, I love to read daily, for fun and enjoyment. I love to write. I also help students with mathematics throughout the state of Hawaii. I also beatbox throughout the state of Hawaii and the world, speaking at conferences, and schools. Liholiho Elementary students were among 300 in attendance when I performed and spoke at the 25th Chevron Honolulu Speech Festival at the McKinley High School Auditorium. -Jason Tom

A school is as only as good as the community behind it and this one is definitely well supported. My son went here and his Kindergarten teacher did a great job getting his test scores up to par. He's a very smart boy but is easily distracted. What can I say? He's a boy! I really like the administrative staff as I felt as though they really cared about my son and they have a great library staff. My son enjoyed the after school programs that are at the school which include golf, lego building and karate. If you don't live in the area it's tough to get in on a Geographic Exemption but it's worthwhile to at least attempt to get in.

The scrips are normally $1 per scrip. The schools fried noodles was awesome, that included geeen onions, kamaboko, bean sprouts, carrots, spam, and Portuguese sausage. We love the Growing Patch!…read more So we initially found the Growing Patch on Patch Hawaii where they list all certified childcare providers on the island. I only used 2 months of maternity leave so I needed to find a daycare that would take my baby as young as she was. We were lucky to find the Growing Patch since they take babies as young as 3 weeks old. We also learned that the owner was prior military and we were proud to go with them since we are military ourselves. We live on the west side and work closer to town so they were right in the middle and convenient for dropping off and picking up baby. Their location is a bit hidden in the back parking lot of Aiea Square area, near Queen Street Cafe but it's easy to get to since it's at the cutoff for Aiea if you're coming from either direction. This makes getting back on the freeway just as easy if you're heading town side. If you're going west, you'll either have to back track to Halawa or drive further down towards Pearl City. To start off, although this facility is a bit hidden, the front doors art covered in bright red posters showing that it's a daycare that provides 24-hour service. Yes! They will watch your child overnight if you need it. We visited the place for the first time during family tour day which was scheduled in advanced for those interested in learning about the facility, their staff and how they do things at the Growing Patch. We were the 1st ones to sign up after the orientation was completed and they offered an "observation day" before my baby officially started daycare with them. This was where they watched her for a few hours to see how she does around the care givers, being in a new place and around other children. She did great her 1st time there and the longer she went, the more she would learn to love being there. They provide you a list with the items they'll need to take care of your baby and anything else you would recommend to keep them comfortable when they're away from you. Each child has a storage cubby for their belongings. At the front door, you have to ring the doorbell to be let in and you check in on the tablet at the front desk. The facility itself is organized and separated into areas for different age groups since they take infants and up to pre-k age. My baby was enrolled into the infants area and they have a lot of things to keep the children busy from walkers, toys, beds and more! They do art work too like a regular school would and send it home with the parents. I love my baby's footprint art! The place smells clean every time I walk in and they sanitize everything at the end of each day. They have a calendar at the front that you can view to see what your child is scheduled to do that day. You can ask the front desk assistants for a curriculum to take home with you too. They even have scheduled field trips for the kids and notify parents via email and the app for permission. Their last field trip was to the Pumpkin Patch back in October 2024. They use an app called Child Pilot to help you keep track of what you're child is doing during the day and to contact you if needed. If you don't bring lunch for your child, they provide meals specially made by the Queen Street Cafe but this is for the toddler ages. The staff here if so friendly and they love the kids very because it shows. When I drop my baby off in the morning, she already knows where she is and loves to smile at all the caregivers. She's even excited to see all the other children and does not cry when I leave. After only a couple months here, my baby is the most friendliest and social child and I love how her smile can brighten up anyone's day when they see her. They hold parent teacher conference to talk about your child's progress here at the Growing Patch. They even ask about the milestones you expect your baby to reach and they'll help them work on that. These meetings are nice and as a first time parent, it's funny to see things from this aspect because I remember my parent teacher conferences with my parents and most of them weren't good since I was naughty lol. I love the relationships they build here otherwise and I haven't had any bad experiences with the Growing Patch so far. We recommend their services to all parents with toddlers or younger and we hope they open more facilities on island in the future. Over the phone, she specified when the soonest date available is and we gladly accepted. From then, we took the next steps and made an appointment to tour the day care. After touring, Domonica proceeds to tell us that the soonest available date is now 2 months later than the original date she offered and confirmed with us. We were very upset as we already confirmed that we wanted this spot over the phone. She apologized and said she talks to many families and assumed that we were going to back out. She offered the same spot that we accepted to MANY families even after we confirmed. This alone is very unprofessional, especially coming from the founder of this operation. She then offered a hug to cure all of her mistakes. The extreme lack of professionalism and customer service that came directly from the founder is just unacceptable. I do not feel comfortable and would not recommend bringing your family to a place that does not truly care for your family as they only seek to secure the money bag. Please take your child to a place where you know they will be valued.

I taught at Sacred Hearts for 10 years and was wrongfully terminated in 2011 when I whistle-blew on William Plourde the religion teacher of three decades for being a predator. He was arrested two years later for grooming the then 6th grader and for two years totally violated her. It's in the news. The school was full of generations of people who teach their daughters to "watch out for Mr. Grabhands". The school is filled with bystanders who would prefer to send their children to a school where they know there is a predator as long as it's not their own child. That makes everyone who knew and didn't stand up for the innocent victims part of the problem and they hold some of the responsibility for allowing it to go on. The year it happened I had mother's in my own daughter's class who were telling me they were there in Molokai back in the 1990s when he went missing with a girl whom they found in a lighthouse with him. I was mortified . . . they all knew about him and did nothing. It's a school with a long history of institutional negligence and Betty White's concern for PR over the safety of not only the students, but the faculty who teach there in such a dysfunctional environment that it's a remake of Penn State and now MSU scandal. The school should not be part of HAIS or even in operation. Betty White will be retired next year, but she's ruined many, many lives with her concern for the reputation of the school over the safety of her students and I don't think there's any place in heaven for her or the Sisters who simply want to pray it away. Horrible school with horrible staff and horrible students. When problems regarding abusive coaching were brought up to the head of school, nothing was done. None of the admin or athletic directors do anything to help you. The school has stupid rules that don't benefit the students at all such as having socks that cover your ankles, yet let the girls, admin, and coaches harass others. The girls at this school are worse than kids at public school. The school is small and all-girl which is a breeding ground for drama. Everyone knows everything about each other, and everyone is up in each others' faces. If you are thinking about sending your daughter here, I suggest you reconsider. read more

My daughter started JK here with Mrs Sernadilla after leaving another preschool. My daughter developed trauma from her previous preschool but Mrs Sernadilla and ELC director Mrs Arnobit are superstars! I don't have all the words to articulate how wonderful they are. Patient when my daughter was emotional, caring and empathetic of our experience and situation. Besides the exceptional care from the teachers, my daughter comes home with inquisitive new theories and questions on topics I know she's learned from school. Horrible. I've heard many reports of students popping bars, smoking marijuana, and drinking. I heard the older kids would influence the younger ones. I asked one of the students if these rumors were true she said yes and told me about 7th graders drinking!! ON CAMPUS!! Tragic. There also has been a sexual assault that happened between a student and a teacher there too, back in 2015. Do the right thing and get your kid out of there... Disappointing school. read more

One of the school's greatest strengths is its size. The student-to-teacher ratio feels just right--small enough for individualized attention, but large enough to offer a well-rounded experience. I've seen my child both supported when he needs help and challenged to grow academically, which is exactly what we hoped for. Equally important has been the social environment. He has built a strong, close-knit group of friends who I truly believe will remain an important part of his life well beyond school. That sense of belonging and community was something we deeply valued when choosing a school, and it's a big reason he never felt the need to look elsewhere. Like any school, it's not perfect. At times, administrative decisions can take longer than expected. That must have been the theme as some of the students had on the costumes. They had a lot of food vendors. Chick-Fil-A was there selling their chicken sandwiches. They were the main sponsor. Other booths were selling popcorn, baked goods, pizza, hot dogs, chicken strip, fries, hamburger curry and lumpia. One booth was doing free airbrushed tattoos. The students must really like this as the line was so long. Another booth was selling Maryknoll merchandise such as T-shirts, hoodies and sunglasses.

As a kid who grew up in Chinatown and attended Princess Kaiulani Elementary School, this was the…read moreschool many people RAVED about. I was young and didn't think much about it but eventually had a smack on the head when I attended Kawananakoa Intermediate School where I had classes with kids who came from Ma'ema'e. These students excelled and definitely stood out in the class. They were the leaders in the pack and I was in the back only to eat their dust. Math, science, English, social studies and Japanese - - they kicked my butt!!! Some of my cousins attended here, including my niece and nephew, and I was shocked on the school's curriculum. Compared with what I had, this school excels in academics and streamlines the students to rise to the top. Because this school is in my district I support them, just like the others in my neighborhood. I have actively helped with their school fundraisers and donated my time volunteering. I understand this school is very difficult to attend if you do not live in this district. Many parents work in downtown and try to get their kids to attend here via Geographic Exception but I hear it's not an easy task. They have their annual Family Night which I attended tonight. On the school grounds they have many games, rides, food booths, bake shop, country store, silent auction, face painting, school logo shop and more! I have volunteered at the Family Night many years when my niece and nephew attended here but now that they have both graduated, I now come here to enjoy. I came to the Family Night 2x today - - once in the early afternoon to attack their bake sale and the second time after 7pm to look for bargains. Tonight I walked away with 4 plants and 4 Fuji apples for less than $15. It was also very cool to bump into some old classmates (they are Ma'ema'e alumni but we met at Kawananakoa) here tonight.

Reviewing a craft fair seems more like it belongs in a community activities brochure - it's an event that takes place on campus but it's not really a school program for students or teachers. Kinda the same opinion re whether reviewing a carnival on campus is helpful. Also, note that some reviews refer to classes offered by the Adult Education Program on campus - after hours for a fee. Yes these are classes held on the KHS campus but it's misleading to suggest that classes like Thai Cooking are a curriculum choice for students. Mahalo to those who noted the dedicated teachers. Yes the school buildings are old and bathrooms can be pretty bad. The school isn't given funds for landscaping, full time gardeners, or upscale interior designers. There are custodians whose daily tasks are basic maintenance. Getting necessary repairs can be a bureaucratic nightmare BUT maintaining a safe and functional appearance is the responsibility of the occupants, the students and teachers.

Kaimuki High School is home to one of the largest craft fair and oh I've never got the chance to check them out as I'm always working and since I'm on the tail end of my vacation time...my boss gave the the few extra days which I'm just so grateful as it got me a chance to give this place a visit. Pretty much overtaking majority of the school as you can find vendors down each hall though all are outdoor setting the slight shade does help as it still gets crazy hot in the afternoon. Very impressed of the variety they have here the parking does get challenging if you don't go early enough though since we went on the last few hours I did manage to get a parking as the early birds left. Me and my bestie hit the ground and tried to check off our gift list we manage to find items for ourselves as well loving all the fun and cute items they have. As we got hungry there was a few food trucks which is a nice convenience as well but what a wonderful place to get a lot of your shopping done and hope that I can do this again as it was a fun experience. Thank you!

Still, his teachers got the best out of him and cared about him and made great efforts to communicate with me about his progress. My second child is a very different creature. She loves to excel. She loves to please people. She loves to be important. She loves a lot of things that could make her absolutely insufferable or make her into a thriving adult, depending on how her character is shaped. And having her in Kapalama is a radically different experience. When my son was in school, I heard tales of a band and a ukulele group and student council and a library club and a robotics team. Just elusive whispers that came and went and I took little notice because he tried his very best to not do anything extra, ever. Well. My daughter does every activity possible and I am so impressed with what they have to offer. Mr. Camarillo, the music teacher, is an incredible professional musician who pours so much time and effort into his students. My daughter goes in to practice with him during recess, she is in after school ukulele band and normal band and we just attended their first performance, which was outstanding. She is so lucky to have him. She also just finished competing with her robotics team, and they made it to states and won a couple of awards and she had the best time ever. I also attend nearly all of the parent workshops help once a month and she is already talking about all of the opportunities afforded to her next year as a fifth grader, like volleyball and basketball and jpo-ing and so on. I am so thankful for Kapalama and everything it has done for my children. Who knew a public school in Kalihi would be so great.
