I went to this school from age 3-18. I love this school! The campus is very clean, the teachers are very kind, attentive, helpful, and wise, and all my classmates were really cool! We did so many amazing field trips, too, like every year we go to Ice Palace and Wet n Wild. In high school, we did four trips, one per each year, three mission trips and one educational trip. All those trips were such great moments to grow close to my friends and see God's creation! KCS is an excellent school. read more

If your child has any behavioral issues or learning disabilities, they will be treated poorly. KCS is not equipped to deal with these children and views them more as problems versus wanting to help them. For those who are neurotypical, I am sure this is an okay school. read more

Both my children attend Kaimuki Christian School and I can't say enough about how thankful I am to have them grow in a strong foundational environment where academics and integrity building-are well balanced. My children are stretched to fulfill their potential as students yet also embraced and supported to find their individual gifts which has built confidence and the love of learning for themselves. My son started from pre-k now in 2nd grade and my daughter which I moved from another private school from 6th to attend KCS now a blooming 7th grader. Both very different in personalities love KCS. We have two boys who attend KCS, and they love it here. Everyone from the teachers to support and administrative staff are very attentive and caring. The low student to teacher ratio ensures that each student gets individual attention, which my husband and I really like. Our boys have been able to make friends easily as well. There are currently several teachers who have been teaching since my husband attended KCS more than 30 years ago. And we know of a few parents who are alumni and have chosen to send their children to KCS because they had such a great experience as students themselves. Since I have recently graduated Kaimuki Christian School after being a member of this school for thirteen years, having attended this school from kindergarten to the twelfth grade, I have spent a great deal of time at Kaimuki Christian School, and I still love every single moment. When my parents first enrolled me at Kaimuki Christian, I was nervous, shy, and prone to tears. However, Kaimuki Christian's nurturing environment helped me to expand my self-confidence. The teachers at Kaimuki Christian invested not only in my academic life, but also in my personal life, because every teacher whom I had the privilege to know would always make the time to help me on a confusing lesson or provide advice on an issue weighing on me. The teachers at Kaimuki Christian have always taken a keen interest in helping their students; I have been taught by teachers who would spend hours after school in one-on-one meetings with interested students, even if they were not being paid for that time and were staying until late in the evening, and by teachers who tutored their students for free during the summer. This principle of putting students and their needs first is not limited to the teachers, as this ideal is also deeply rooted amongst the administration of this school. Whenever I possessed concerns, the teachers, as well as the administration, always welcomed me to voice those thoughts, then did their absolute best to address them in an extremely timely fashion. The teachers at Kaimuki Christian not only are overqualified to teach the subjects that they do, holding graduate degrees from institutions the likes of Stanford and Penn, but also, more importantly, have a clear passion for what they do. The teachers are ardent Christians, and their faith has long served as both a guide and an inspiration to my faith. Moreover, the loving environment that they created has enabled me to become the person that I, not others, want to be. Additionally, it was the constant expression of their strong faith that prevented me from being bullied and, instead, accepted. Even though I was offered the opportunity to attend a more renowned institution for high school, I am extremely glad that I never wavered in my decision to stay at Kaimuki Christian. It is because I chose to stay at Kaimuki Christian that I had a myriad of opportunities that I would not have possessed otherwise. For starters, when I started high school, one of my teachers reached out to me about joining the cross-country team; without his encouragement, I would have never done so, much less for four years straight. Moreover, the teachers helped me with projects outside of school. My literature teacher would read the essays that I wrote for both local and national writing competitions, and my science teachers helped me and some of my classmates enter an international science competition. Without them, I would not have won several accolades that I now possess. Furthermore, due to the teachers providing their students with significant personal attention, I continued to succeed academically, and, due to the administration's strong desire to give students every opportunity possible, I was able to attend college classes at Kapiolani Community College. Additionally, the small class sizes helped me to continue to grow, thrive, and make lifelong friendships. Thanks to Kaimuki Christian School, I was accepted to nine top-tiered schools. This fall, I will be attending one of the highest ranking liberal arts colleges in the country (U.S. News and World Report), Williams College, because of what Kaimuki Christian has done for me. Without Kaimuki Christian, my aspiration of double-majoring as a pre-med hopeful at Williams College, my dream and reach school, would have never come to pass. Kaimuki Christian has transformed me into the person that I am today, full of faith and hope for the future. Our experience to date has been truly amazing. Words cannot truly express how grateful we are for the opportunities and education provided by Kaimuki Christian School. Our youngest son was blessed to have Ms. Vera for his first experience in preschool. He would often come home singing with so much joy in his little heart. It can be hard for parents to send their child off to school when they are 3 years old. It can be the first time they experience separation and you start to worry if they are going to be safe, secure, happy and loved. Let me assure you that Kaimuki Christian School is the perfect environment for your child. If only every 3 year old could have a Ms. Vera to make an impression on their early years. My youngest son is now in the 2nd grade and we have had only great experiences with every single teacher he has had to date. What first started out as just a preschool option has now become the school where we have made our home. We later decided to send our middle son who was 15 at the time to the KCS high school program because we were very impressed with KCS' college prep and scholarship program directed by Mrs. Watanabe. Mrs. Watanabe gets students started with their college planning from the 9th grade and when it is time to apply for admissions and scholarships in their later high school years, they are already organized and ready to go. I encourage all parents exploring private high school options to take a close look at what KCS offers by attending their middle and high school open house. I truly feel that their college scholarship program is unrivaled. Perhaps KCS' most important attribute is that the school's Christian environment produces authentic young men and women ready for today's world. Let's face it, we all worry about our kids when they are not with us. And when they eventually leave us for college and start their own lives, it is comforting knowing that they were brought up in a Christian environment which teaches them to be authentic in the eyes of Christ and helps them to make better decisions in the real world. Every Friday, the students attend chapel and the messages given by Pastor Valente are very relevant and appealing to the middle and high school students. This was another key reason for sending my 15 year old to KCS for high school. Pastor Valente is someone you want in front of your teenager as a mentor. There are many schools in Hawaii that can provide great educational opportunities. Kaimuki Christian provides that plus instills an authentic Christian foundation which is very important especially with the challenges in today's society. I also can't say enough about the school's Principal, Mrs. Ahn. She is a true servant leader. She is so encouraging and her conversations with you are very heartfelt. She truly cares for each and every student and is the hardest working school Principal I've ever known. She is always looking for ways to make KCS better for the students and their families. Her supporting staff, Vice Principals Mr. Kanakanui and Mr. Kaji are also a positive reflection of the heart of the school and Mrs. Ahn's servant leadership. I encourage everyone to meet with the KCS administrative staff and schedule a tour or attend an open house so you can experience what so many often pass by just because they simply don't know. This is a surprisingly good school. One of my children attends Kaimuki Christian School (KCS), and is doing very well there. We tried public school for both of our children. Unfortunately, we found that many standards of civility and decency were rarely enforced by the teachers and administrators, and our kids were not doing well. Case in point, when my son was in kindergarten in a public school, he actually got punched in the stomach by another child because he had earned a lunch with the principal for reading achievement. In middle school, he also had to constantly hear the "F-bomb" and other swear words being yelled in the hallways between classes, which he found very disrespectful. What I really like about KCS is the dedication of the teachers to the students, and their concern for them as people first, and performance "machines" second. At our first parent-teacher meeting, I was so impressed by the homeroom teacher's knowledge of my child's strengths and weaknesses, and the view that no matter what the level of academic prowess, they are a precious child of God. The concern for the development of my child's unique spiritual gifts was so refreshing, and an important reminder for me as a parent to consider spiritual maturity to be a priority, even over academic achievement. After all, would I want a "brainiac" child if they were not mindful of how they treat other people? That being said, I am very impressed with the academic rigor of this small, intimate school. My child has studied algebra I and II, geometry, chemistry, American history, literature, and other subjects. His history teacher gave up many of her Saturdays to tutor interested students so they could take the AP American History exam recently. Where our child has struggled, we have challenged him to ask various teachers for help, and he has told us that they have always been delighted to spend the extra time with him to help him grasp difficult concepts. This is contrasted with some teachers he had in a previous public school who would tell him "Go ask one of your classmates," or get angry with him for asking the question, perhaps because they didn't know the answer themselves! The teacher who also serves as the college advisor goes above and beyond to encourage the students to stretch themselves academically, and to get in the habit and discipline of working hard and thinking critically. My child also enjoys playing in the band, which, because the school is small, is more like a "stage band." It is obvious that the kids enjoy playing together, and it's a joy to hear them play uptempo jazzy selections. The school also competes in volleyball, basketball, cross country and soccer in a Christian league. It is so different and touching to see the kids (from both teams) get in a big circle, hold hands, and pray together before a game or competition; a great reminder of who is actually in control of the game and our lives as well. Yes, it is a sacrifice financially. My wife and I spend at least a third of our income on our kids' schooling. My daughter goes to a Catholic school, which she loves. Sometimes I think of all the travel we could be doing if we didn't have this expense. But, knowing that our children are learning in an environment that emphasizes spiritual development, and that they are not made fun of for asking questions or doing their best academically, is, I hope, an investment that will pay great dividends in their lifetimes. read more

If you are considering enrolling your child or grandchild in Kaimuki "Christian" School for middle school or high school, I caution you. This school is very small and because of this, the established students who came up from elementary will dictate how new students are treated; something my grandson experienced firsthand. Make sure if you are considering enrolling your tween or teen in this school that he/she has this verse memorized: "44 But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, Matt. 5:44" They are going to need to reflect on it daily because unless they're someone the class "popular" kid deems as worthy, they will endure bullying and/or ostracizing by the bully and the rest of the class will follow suit for fear of also being included in the list of people being bullied and ostracized. At this school, you will not find someone like Jesus- willing to stand in front of a person who is getting stoned... Unfortunately, the Bible is taught but seldom practiced at this school by the students as is my personal experience paying for 3 years of tuition for my grandson to attend Kaimuki Christian School. No child is perfect but no child deserves to be bullied or ostracized and ignored by his/her class. As Dietrich Bonhoeffer said, "SILENCE IN THE FACE OF EVIL IS EVIL ITSELF; GOD WILL NOT HOLD US GUILTLESS. NOT TO SPEAK IS TO SPEAK AND NOT TO ACT IS TO ACT." Before those reading this get defensive and pull out their files of "well your grandson isn't perfect and he talks to much" as "evidence", let me just say this: my grandson is the type of person who would GLADLY give the shirt off his back for someone in need (he's done it several times in the past without even realizing others noticed), he is the type of person who would bend over backwards to help a friend but was never given the opportunity to do so by any of his peers at this school. When we first enrolled my grandson for 7th grade, we were hopeful that this would be a school he could grow to love and graduate from. The high school is a new development, the classes are miniscule in size. It makes it very easy for one or two bullies to create an environment of hostility. I actually empathize with the other students who were too afraid to stand up for my grandson, imagine what kind of terror they also face on a daily basis! My grandson only wanted friends and the only one he ever got left the school a year ago, for several reasons- bullying by this one specific boy was a contributing factor. After my daughter spoke with the administrators and thought they had a plan of action to curb the bullying so that the students could all get along, things were okay for maybe a week. The verbal assaults and harsh words from the bully and his cohorts (one cohort has since left KCS), had subsided for the most part. However, in their place was silence. Silence by way of ostracizing and ignoring my grandson unless a teacher, administrator or parent was around. If there wasn't an assignment or project that needed to be done, my grandson was ignored. If he walked up to them to try to join the conversation, they ignore him and change the subject and act as if my grandson was on mute and invisible. This is simply cruel and unacceptable whether this school was Christian or not. The fact that this school considers itself to be Christian makes it even worse. Granted, not every student at the school is Christian but there are standards listed in their handbook that are not being implemented by the staff and administration. Bottom line- if you're looking for a middle or high school- think twice about sending your child here. I'm sure if they go to this school from elementary, it's not as bad because they grew up together. New students are often not afforded the opportunity to be included or liked or befriended at this school- depending on the class and how the "popular" kid in the class treats people. I don't see many fruits of the Spirit in the 9th grade class at KCS. And what a shame it is in this world and in this time- that "Christians" persecute and exclude other children, other Christians. Jesus would not approve nor do I. If I could give a 0- I would. I wasted THOUSANDS of dollars in tuition sending my grandson to this school hoping that getting a quality education wouldn't mean being persecuted and excluded by his peers. read more

I attended Kaimuki Christian from 8th-12th grade, and I am currently a student at UCLA studying civil engineering. Kaimuki Christian School provided me with a safe environment to build my confidence and self-esteem. Because the classroom setting was so small, teachers grew to know me on a personal level and often stayed after regular school hours, going above and beyond if I ever needed assistance in my classes. During my first UCLA class that required a paper, my high school teacher from Kaimuki Christian even took time to proofread my writing. In addition, due to the small size, I was able to take part in a wide variety of extra curricular activities offered at the school including volleyball, basketball, soccer, student council, math team, and cross-country. Hearing my friends from larger schools talk about how busy their schedules were with only one extra curricular activity made me realize how blessed I was to have the unique experience of participating in multiple actives at a small school. Kaimuki Christian School provides an extremely safe and nurturing environment, which really allowed me to discover my true identity in Christ throughout high school. In college, I encountered many different types of people, and I know if I hadn't grown up in a safe high school environment where I was able to discover my identity and build my self esteem at a young age, I would not have the confidence in my faith that I do in college. read more

The teachers are decent and they actually care. The teachers push students to do their best but are not well suited to teach ADHD/ADD students. If your kid is at all different or not "popular" I warn you to be careful admitting them to this school. My son entered at 7th grade and was very hopeful and excited and as someone who has been homeschooled for a chunk of his education after attending public school, he was a little awkward when he first started here. From day one the "popular" boy singled him out and since then, has made his school life very lonely. The small class sizes in high school, filled primarily with children who attended from elementary and have long relationships with each other, makes it very difficult for new students to acclimate and fit in. Depending on the class, it's a toss of a coin. Unfortunately for my son, the leader of his class is a boy who has a relative that is in the school and is not very kind to his fellow classmates, especially my son. Attempts to deal with the bullying have not helped the matter. I am not pretending my son is an angel but if the teachers and administration of KCS had approached other students individually and asked about how this one boy treats kids, they would find that my son is not the only one who has been treated poorly by this child. Shame. After two years of trying, my son's school performance started to sharply decline because he was so isolated, alone and sad. After counseling, he revealed that at school, unless teachers were around, this one child would persuade the other students in my son's class to turn their backs on my son and ignore him and pretend that he didn't exist. One of their other classmates last year left after being bullied by this child. Although I'm sure that if I went to the administration with my concerns, they'd hear me out but you can't force kids to be friends with someone that the class bully deems unsuitable and in a class size as small as my son's (9 total), it makes for a very lonely school experience. My son doesn't want to try to learn anymore and I'm not blaming the bully for that 100% but it is very much a contributing factor to his grades. Teen years are formative and important and I believe that as parents, we really need to be active and engaged with our children. I hope that the school irons out its kinks. I know that the high school is a new development and maybe the administration is not used to or equipped to handle high school students, their hormones, and the bullying that can (and did) ensue. I'm going to be putting my son in public school to finish his 9th grade year and we'll go from there. Praying that this Christian school deal with their issues and improves. It just breaks my heart that my son had to endure bullying at a Christian school and by a child who claims to be a Christian. It breaks my heart that to find friends, my son has to befriend kids in 8th grade because none of the 8 other kids in his 9th grade class can find it in their heart to befriend him. Being talkative is not reason enough to treat a child poorly. I wish I could give KCS a higher rating but I'm just done with sitting by and hoping it will get better when it hasn't and won't. On a side note- if you want your child to be overloaded with homework and tests from several classes on the same day, this is the school for you. My son's grades are partially due to laziness, partially due to his ADHD, partially due to him not wanting to try because he's depressed about not having friends but also partially due to the workload issues. When we were fundraising with his classmates, other parents told me their children were also struggling because of the workload. The school would GREATLY benefit from block scheduling so students had adequate time to complete assignments and projects. read more

Excellent school. Pre-school to 12th grade. Small but clean and updated campus. Excellent teachers. Great teacher to student ratio. Took a year or so to get used to everyone's enthusiastic Christian attitudes but I like how they stress character development as well as academics. They just recently started their soccer, volleyball and basketball programs so athletics are not very strong right now but they have numerous other after school activities (chess club, math club, robotics, etc). There is no cafeteria at present so they get lunches catered from Sodexo. Most kids bring home lunches. Cannot stress enough how great their teachers are. Most are fairly young so they are enthusiastic, motivated, and technology efficient. All the teachers and staff are so nice here and so into their faith that, at first, it seemed like everyone was REQUIRED to put up that display. But, after a while, you realize that all of this is real and everyone is genuine and the Christian atmosphere is emphasized because all the teachers and staff have strong Christian values and are not afraid to show it. read more
