I volunteered at this school yesterday and I must say, the children were well behaved. The staff were all very friendly and helpful too. I had a small chat with students and they said that they love their school. One thing about a school...if the students love to attend it...they must be doing something right. Is it appropriate to write a review about experiences from almost 20 years ago? I've always been leery about educational institution reviews because student experiences are almost always unique from each other, but I couldn't pass up leaving this piece of mana'o. Like my dozens of cousins, we were children of Filipino immigrants. Our parents baptized us at the Church (later, Cathedral). I was destined for St. Theresa School. I am grateful for the teachers and administrators who work hard despite little or no acknowledgment. The Carondolet nuns I knew are probably all long gone but some lay teachers are still there. Mrs. Ueda, you are still my #1. The next generation of STS students tell me that they now have PE uniforms and a lunch service. While my experience at this school was a mostly positive one, I always felt as if this school wasn't as "advanced" as others. No yearbook, no lunch service, doing "PE" in blue polyester... Everything seemed very old fashioned compared to other parochial schools. I know now that $$$ determines how fast or slow a school moves toward change. Location wise it's perfect. A long driveway and large parking lot protects the children from the busy School St. Safety first. The Co-Cathedral still towers majestically over Kalihi. I always felt privileged to have it as my home church. I know several other parochial schools have fallen victim to the economy and I am happy to see STS thriving for today's kids. read more

This has been an unfinished review for several months, possibly because I was hoping that this school would somehow redeem themselves before my daughter graduated. Didn't happen. This is my opinion based on my interactions with the staff and the school as a whole. I definitely feel that if your child has been a student from grade school here than your experience is probably significantly better than mine. My daughter went to a public school from K-6...so our need was for a good private middle school. We heard good things about both St. Elizabeth (which is in close proximity to our home) and St. Theresa. I got into contact with both school to express interest in enrolling my daughter. We ultimately decided that St. Theresa was a better fit. Without going into detail about every specific incident. The office staff is very old school and not so forthcoming with information. While it may not be appropriate to "review" a school...I honestly feel like it's still a "business" especially for private schools. As with every business, your front line is your administration and staff, with that said the office staff...is in desperate need of reorganization. From the two ladies that take care of office issues which half the time they don't know what their doing...to the financial guy who really lacks a personality. I recall having to meet with him in his office...his monitor is located in an awkward area in the very middle of his desk so you have to basically look around his monitor to get any type of eye contact. RUDE. Then there was the head master at that time who ALWAYS looked like he just rolled out of bed...always rockin' the overgrown facial hair...khaki shorts and tennis shoes. Not a good look for the school. I was SOOO glad when Mr. Pires took over my daughter's last year! I honestly feel that a major contributing factor to a student's success is definitely parental involvement. I've never felt that St. Theresa had that as one of their priorities. I am a very involved parent...however I do not have a crystal ball or read minds...if no information is filtered to the parents...how are we to know anything. One good thing is the tuition is still relatively low considering other private schools...about $5400. Just be aware...if you are not Catholic...you pay about $500 more. Another good thing is...there are a hand full of teachers who really made my daughters transition from public to private school a little easier (Mrs. Redila & both Mr. Pires'). Make your decision wisely tho...your tuition is non refundable in most cases -_-. read more

This school is going downhill fast, in my opinion. I have had my daughter in St. Theresa for 3 years now. This would have been a 1 star post if not for the great first two years. The first grade teacher was fabulous and the second grade teacher was very good. In all three years there has been a very high turnover rate for the teachers, 3 to 5 each year. They have always had two class rooms for each grade, 1A and 1B, to keep the class size down. This year they decided to combine the classes. I almost fell out of my chair when my daughter come home on the first day and said she had 29 kids in her class. I thought that can't be, maybe the other teacher will show up next week and they will split again. But once I got a reply from the school, they confirmed it, the classes had combined. After going in to speak with someone about this I found out that there are 3 other classrooms that have done the same thing. Now they are looking for class sizes of 30 kids per class. If I wanted 30 kids per class I would not be wasting $5500 a year for privet school. This brings me to my next point, the tuition. When we first came to St. Theresa School they told me they had not raised the tuition in 10 years, great I thought, they said they believe in keeping privet school affordable. After our first year the rates went up, just a small amount, so I thought not too bad, with the new president cost are going up. Then this year we just got the letter that says they are raising tuition again, this time $1100, WHAT??? Bigger classroom sizes higher tuition, less education. By the way when I spoke with the school about the class size, they are not looking at changing it, large classroom is the way of the future. With the higher tuition next needless to say we have found a private school for next year, with much smaller classroom sizes and no difference in tuition cost, the new higher tuition cost. read more

In the beginning of the year I was desperately trying to find a preschool for my 3 year old son. St Theresa was on my list and I was anxiously waiting for them to receive there license for preschool so they could be a back up if my son didn't get into Kamehameha preschool. God sure does work in wonderful ways. My son didn't get into the lottery for Kamehameha School so we registered him at St Theresa... and all I can say is this was truly a wonderful blessing. I am so happy with him there that I didn't even register him for P4 at Kamehameha. First off meeting his two wonderful teachers Ms. Collins & Ms. Wendy I knew instantly it was going to be a wonderful year. Ms. Collins his teacher by far exceeded our expectations she is so DEDICATED to all her students it's very apparent and such a breath of fresh air. My son is so excited to go to school every morning that he some times forgets to tell me Bye.. he cried his very 1st day of school and by his second day he zoomed right past me and now I'm lucky if I get a wave. Bitter sweet for me. I'm so impressed with his growth these past 8 months. Ms Collins exposes these kids to kindergarten work but doesn't push them too far. My son is in a wonderful environment and I can't wait for my 2 year to start there. Ms Collins truly is a phenomenal loving teacher. She is full of energy and has such an enthusiastic personality, she is constantly looking for ways to improve the class room and the school. I thought I would be looking for another school for me son next year but because of how amazing she is my son isn't going anywhere next year he is staying at St Theresa. A million times THANK YOU Ms Collins & Ms. Wendy. And on a side note I love the fact that they take the preschool students to Mass. Not all preschools do. read more

My daughters first experience in kindergarten was more than a mommy could ever be thankful for because the the teacher and her teacher assistant are both loving, caring and very qualified. This summer 2012 there even had a summer session not only to introduce my little one to her new school but were able to also introduce some of thier academic curriculum as well. Yesterday at the school assembly, the entire school gathered in prayer and song with their new head of the entire school with a mixture of young and esablished teachers and basically alot of song and laughter and as I watch my little one dance to a hip hop song lead by the music teacher I was taken back by all of the teacher and staff and entire school dance and have alot of fun. The years theme is to be " a shining star" yes like the EARTH WIND AND FIRE song I thought that it was great to teach the kids how to shine thier light as Christ did but most of all teaching inner beauty is more important to self so in the end you too can share your light with others. My little girl face was so inspired yesterday because she sat thier and listened which is not characteristic of her since she is majorly active. After school, she had so much to share about her day and got up this morning putting on her uniform and kissing me goodbye by this she really enjoys school. The school now has revamped staff,l uniforms, and from what I have gathered are good- natured. read more

I went to St Theresa School in the seventies from grades 2-8. I have many fond memories of those years. Some of the teachers were great and some not so great. My six grade teacher Sister James Therese and my eighth grade teacher the late Sister Barbara Mary stand out and I love them dearly. Further back I have fond memories of a second grade teacher Mrs Niemi. One shouldn't expect every teacher to be as good as the other. Some will be better than the others. And I wasn't always an angel either to make an understatement. If I could I would like to apologize to my seven grade teacher Mrs Julie Borges for being such a jerk sometimes. Hope you read this I'm so sorry. But overall I had a great experience there. My classmates round out the experience. Understand that some of them I went to St Therea's almost double the years as my high school classmates. Me and some of them have even agreed that if St Theresa had a high school we would have loved to stay together. Classmates like Darren Rodrigues, Fred Kaluna, John Baba, Steven Aurand and many many more are still dear to me for lack of a better phrase. Even former students from other grades still remember and greet me. My class went through a lot together : serious illnesses, a death, not to mention puberty ( no laughing matter especially at the time). One beloved teacher even left the nun hood in the middle of the school year. So we all became close. I can remember every classmate from St Theresa and not surprisingly not every classmate from Damien. I love St Theresa and I would recommend it to anyone that can afford it. Sadly I know many can not. Back then , one could go to Monsignor Vierra for help. I don't know if this present administration is willing or able to be as kind. The academic curriculum is very good I know because my fundamentals were better than other people I met or worked with later in life. And I know the curriculum is even better now. I believe there's a computer lab on top of the library that wasn't there when I was there. One son has attended here already and God willing I plan to send my other three kids here. I recommend this school to anyone. At least give it a try. I don't think you will be disappointed. You can always take your child out if you are. read more
