Big Walnut Animal Care Center - Dixie Aka "Dixiecup"

I cannot say enough good about this place. Between the hospitable boarding, to the vet services,…read moreand the absolute genuine care for the well being of our pets, they can do no wrong. I want to give a shout out especially to Dr. Maimone, who is the primary caregiver for our beloved Lab "Dixie" aka "Dixiecup". A little history, Dixie is an American Black Lab who turned 9 this past summer. She is a 9 year old puppy! She's got a spice for life and having fun like no other dog I've ever owned, and she is absolutely the sweetest dog you could ever meet. In October 2022 she got dealt a raw hand, and she was diagnosed with grade two, Subcutaneous MAST Cell Tumor Disease (which is an aggressive form of doggie cancer). Dr. Maimone was the one who performed the surgery to remove some tumors that showed up and had them tested. Dixie had an incision that was about 20 inches long due to multiple tumors being found and removed. Our options were limited, we could do chemo or radiation at the tune of $35-45,000. With no guarantee of success. So we made the decision to keep Dixie as comfortable as possible with palliative care, and once it started to affect her quality of life then we would have to make that dreaded choice to let her go. Dixie was given a prognosis of 3-6 months life span with this disease. We were absolutely heartbroken. Dr. Maimone explained that the MAST Cell is a histamine releasing cell, and that Dixies body was over reacting to said histamine, which was causing the tumors to form. She recommended that we try a benedryl and steroid regimin to try and counteract the histamines being released. We agreed to this treatment to try and give Dixie the comfort she deserved, and to be able to enjoy the time she had left with us. At three months we went in for a checkup and Dr. Maimone said she was pleased with Dixies condition. 6 months came, and Dr. Maimone said she was no longer seeing any progression of the cancer. Then at 9 months, Dr. Maimone said "I think her cancer is in remission". At 1 year, Dr Maimone did another checkup with complete blood work etc, and told that Dixie now had a clean bill of health, and that there werr no signs of her cancer whatsoever! Today, at 15 months, Dixie was out back chasing squirrels and playing with her ball like nothing was ever wrong with her. I cannot thank Dr. Maimone enough for her care and love of animals, especially Dixie. By her hunch on the treatment plan, she has truly given Dixie a miracle. And we are truly thankful and humbled by her genuine care. Thank you again Dr. Maimone! Because of you, Dixie bear the odds and KICKED CANCERS ASS! We are forever in your debt.

Dr. Hurst is amazing in the care she provides and follow-up services. When my geriatric pup had to be euthanized due to spleen failure, she was so empathetic and sympathetic. She provided a book I could borrow to share a beautiful story with my younger son that helped him with the tragic loss. More recently, I had rescued a dog from the county shelter that tested positive for intestinal worms. Dr. Hurst was fantastic as she provided the necessary care and continued follow-up until the dog was "free and clear". She even called after each testing herself (unfortunately the first round didn't clear him up) to discuss directly with me. She also made suggestions on items like probiotics and other helpful things I often keep large-xlarge dogs and knowing Dr. Hurst has equine experience, also gives additional help with the bigger pups and the varying care they need vs the smaller dogs. I had a cat years ago and received equally wonderful care. The staff is also super nice and always helpful. I often suggest this vet to those in my area looking for a vet for their pets. Great practice. The sister practice is also wonderful and it's really nice knowing you have a vet on call always between the two for emergencies.

I have taken my Pomeranian here for 6 months for grooming. He had scattered matting so I was…read moreadvised to get him several mini spaw treatments with dematting each time until hes fully dematted then a full groom and cut. We waited for 6 long months for this full groom and cut to happen which was $90+ my family was mortified when he came home. The groomer tending to his dematting sessions was really nice & patient however, I made sure if she is really good with cuts. I went back to the store to discuss the end result with the manager Brie, she says she'll see what she can do. 2 weeks came by never heard back. So I followed up. She says the owner doesn't do refunds or the option was to get another cut from a different store! Unbelievably disappointing and will never ever come back here.

There is a large washing area that accommodates dogs of all sizes. Shampoo built into hose so just change the lever to clean or rinse. There was also a scrubbing brush to clean with and a regular brush to brush out. Hanging up there were a few different scented sprays to finish up with. We went with the grapefruit one. One of their vacuums is down so it wasn't in there but a staff member was able to snag it from the other bathing area so we could get him blown out. There are also a few towels provided and a small dog and large dog collar that you can attach to the wall so your pup isn't all over the place. Would come back again to use this self serve option. The groomers are just okay. Last time we picked up our pup he still had lots of hair flying around and his hind area was unevenly trimmed. Not to mention it took longer than expected which would have been fine if they didn't send me a text saying to head back that my dog was almost done. I came back and still waited 40+ minutes before he came out. I had to ask someone what was going on. Also looked like the tips of his nails were just filed but not actually clipped

I need to be middle-of-the-road for the stars as Conner and Becky, two of the techs I am familiar…read morewith, are commendable in their duties. Dr. Kaser, however, will only do exactly what he wants, and he let it be known that he "does not want to be a third wheel in the care of Harry", my 13 yo Pomeranian. I chose this practice blindly since I was moving almost next door to them, up from Worthington OH to Delaware OH. One of my first questions to him was to ascertain if he was willing to be our primary vet when Harry's care came under a cardiologist at OSU. All cardiologists will diagnose and determine the medicines necessary, blood tests, etc. that are to be turned over to the primary vet for carrying out the orders from the cardiologist. This is common practice. Dr. Kaser is not interested in being a part of a team effort to keep my dog alive and has said he does not want to be a part of anything to harm my dog. Well, withholding critical tests and refusing to prescribe per the cardiologists requests, in my opinion, is harming my dog as long as I choose to stay, which I will no longer darken his door. Harry, a 13 yo Pomeranian, has been to OSU Cardiology/ER twice since July and COVE ER 5 times and each time came back with progressive heart issues that require targeted medication and blood work. Now I am stuck here in mid winter with no place to go since the places I've called are not taking new patients right now. So COVE generously will take Harry in for his required blood work to determine if he is taking the medicine at a safe level, and when weather breaks I will have to drive almost 20 miles to his old vet in Worthington - The Vet Clinic - who have stepped up for Harry's care on numerous occasions when Dr. Taser would not intervene on Harry's behalf. If you do not ever think you will require a specialist for your beloved pet, then this would be the place to go - as I said, Conner and Becky are superb techs and Harry loves them. But if you someday think you will require a Team, go elsewhere, as there is no "I" in TEAM.

I'll be brief. I recently lost my beloved 6 year old cat at MedVet after his 4 day stay there…read more That loss was very difficult and painful enough, but the over $12,000.00 vet bill for his care and stay made his death much, much worse due to the sad simple fact that MedVet does not offer either any kind of a bereavement discount if your pet dies in their care or any kind of a discount to seniors living on a limited income. Those types of compassionate discounts are something that they very seriously need to think about offering. I think it would seriously help with their ratings (and their ratings could frankly use some help). I honestly do trust that they did everything possible to save my cats life and they all appeared very professional, very caring, compassionate and concerned. However, their billing policies shows very clearly that their final bottom line is that they are very much a "for-profit business" and you should have no illusions about that if you take your pet there for help. The first thing they ask about after getting your name and your pets name and why you are there, is your credit card information. One final thought......please carefully look over their other reviews here (I sincerely wish I had before I took my poor cat there) and then think about what you have read in these reviews a bit and then honestly ask yourself: "Why are so, so many of their reviews only one star?" T.S.
