Do I join an expensive gym in Manhattan which would be under-utilized since I come-and-go? I was excited to discover the city-run Constance Baker Motley Rec Center on East 54th Street. They've got a fitness center, gym, track, pool and -- hold onto your hat! -- my annual membership (since I'm a senior citizen) is $25!!! Can you believe it?! Even if you're not old it'll only cost $150 per year. In Manhattan! I've read complaints that seem to permeate the facility. But for my needs -- and I really just joined -- it's great. The fitness room is somewhat antiquated, but has enough of what I want and so far (knock wood) everything works. There's a decent locker room, the staff is polite and the building itself, which dates to 1911, is pretty cool. Curious about the name, I learned that Ms. Motley was an American civil rights lawyer and the first African American woman appointed to the federal judiciary. (I love that the city pays homage to her.)

I love this location bc not all locations have a pool ‍. It also, has aerobic morning classes for ppl with lower extremities issues workout sessions. The main gym is on the 4th floor, Treadmills, exercise bikes etc on 3rd floors w/ basketball courts opposite. 1st fl entrance has billiards tables, and ping pong tables. It's normally., a good vibe with pleasant staff members, however, no one's perfect. Lately, they're hiring young ppl with bad manners towards customers. Unfortunately, what young staff doesn't understand is w/ out customers there's no need for this building or staff. It's important to be nice. I said Hello twice to girl in photo upon entering & all I got was a blank stare & attitude. She's the girl in the middle in light color shirt. Later, boss told same girl to do something & she rolls her eyes . Avoid her at all cost or her attitude might mess up your workout. What I don't get is,?if ur not a people person don't take the job. Basketball City is huge. I have been there for a couple of events…read more I would say that if going from the train, it is better to make your way from the North than to go from the south. Also, if you are going to the entrance from the southern approach, stay west and don't walk up on the waterway. Unless it is warm and you want a scenic view, in which case, go north and walk along the water and around the building as it is a great view. In the winter, you will be on a date with the icy wind.

These include Community Centers, Field Houses, and Nature Centers and offer services such as indoor pools, weight rooms, basketball courts, dance studios, boxing rings, art studios, game rooms and libraries. 59 West is a medium-sized facility that has one fitness room, a gym/basketball court, a climbing wall and a pool. The place is clean, though not new and shiny. The fitness room is kind of small, but has a decent number of machines. 3 cycles, 2 treadmills, 3 step machines, and about 4 or 5 weight machines. They also have a pretty wide selection of freeweights. My only complaint about the exercise room is the lack of stretching area. I usually exercise in the early afternoon, so there aren't many people around. I don't know what it's like in the evenings or on weekends. The best thing is the price. $50/year for most centers, $75/year for ones with a pool. If you get a membership to one, you can visit ANY rec center in the system in any of the 5 boroughs. If you're looking for a place to work out and have basic needs, then a City Gym is a good choice. There are several in the city, so do some investigating to see if this or the center near you is a place you'd spend time.

We originally planned to reopen Rec Center 59 in the Spring of this year; however, due to funding matters and several necessary scope additions for the existing building, we now anticipate reopening the center in Fall 2011. The construction sign outside of the recreation center will be updated to reflect the change in schedule shortly. Some of these new features will include an indoor state-of-the-art pool; new electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems; a new First Aid room; improvements to the gymnasium and a new cardio room. A new addition to the building, with three levels, is also being constructed. Men's and women's locker rooms, a family changing room, and lifeguards' locker rooms will be on the lower level. A youth activities room, computer room, multi-purpose room, and bathrooms will be on the ground floor, and aerobics and fitness rooms will be on the second floor. All three floors will be accessible via an elevator and staircases. We have added the necessary installation of new windows, replacement of two skylights, a new roof, and installation of a chimney liner to the scope of work for this important project. We apologize for any inconvenience the delay in reopening the recreation center may cause, but are confident that park goers will be pleased with the end result. We appreciate your continued patience while we improve your park.

There isn't that much additional equipment or workout options besides the rock wall at this spot. It is much quieter though and still plenty of ways to entertain yourself on the various courses. Public parks in the 5 Boroughs, such as St. Mary's, showcase events, full of children's activities, literary events, music performances and live shows, for free. Stomping our way to St. Mary's, my husband and I were fortunate to catch Felix Hernandez's 'Rhythm Revue' segment here. The heat is on, temperature was rising and everyone, for a moments notice, experienced all the excitement with a lot of Boogaloo, salsa and a few selections of classic soul, disco and funk music in a local, South Bronx Park. Bronx resident or not, if this music is up your alley, I'm so sure, you'd bust a groove, too. But, Central Park it's not, nor does it come close. Does St Mary's Park need a major litter-free overhaul? Damn skippy. But the fact is, that residents in this section, all summer long, can enjoy lively events and a little piece of nature in the heart of the South Bronx.

I recently moved to the area and was eager to find a new climbing gym. I figured I'd lay out all…read morethe pros and cons, since I've been a member of many types of gyms in the past. Pros: 1) It's one of the few gyms in the area, and it offers a few ropes routes which is nice. 2) This location is chill and not crowded after work, which is a plus if you work 9-6. You never have to fight over a route even though the gym isn't huge. 3) The employees are super friendly and wonderful. We felt welcomed as soon as we walked through the door. 4) Despite not being new, it seems clean and well maintained. 5) This may be a pro or a con depending on how you look at it, but the grades are slightly soft. I'll frame this as a pro because it makes it a more approachable gym for people who are new to climbing. 6) The climbers I spoke to were all super nice. I've noticed all gyms seem to have their own "culture." This one is welcoming and approachable. 7) There seems to be a good range of setting styles. Cons: 1) While it is nice that there is a rope/sport climbing section, it is pretty teeny, the routes are short, and the grades are pretty much limited to soft 5.11+ and below. That being said, space is a hot commodity in Manhattan so I'm appreciative of any ropes gym. 2) It would be nice if they sold snacks/refreshments. Most gyms offer this and it's a nice way to get more out of your session if you forget to bring your own. 3) With approachability comes climbers who are still learning gym courtesy. Things like starting a route that overlaps with someone else's or not untying one's figure eight knot were things that I noticed. This isn't so much a reflection of the gym, but more of the gym goers which I'm sure they'll learn with time. That being said, I've really enjoyed climbing here! I love the staff and the setting is interesting. I will definitely be coming back here in the future!
