We stayed in a king suite River view - The President. I wouldn't say you have a great view of the river as we could only see bits of it from the room angle and the buildings. But we still enjoyed it. Though I was glad the outdoor dining area was not open yet because it wouldn't have felt as private in our room with that area being part of the view. Please keep in mind that this is a historical hotel so the rooms are odd angles. The bathroom was very small and the toilet sat angled in front of the vanity, so it was a little cramped to try to stand in front of the mirror/sink to get ready (hair, makeup, etc.). I absolutely adored that the room numbers outside the room are vintage post office box doors. The trains blow their whistles a lot at night passing through and this woke us up each night, so keep that in mind if you are a light sleeper. We enjoy trains and liked seeing them (so that is a pro/con, we liked the trains, just not at night when sleeping). We were there for our anniversary and I was pleasantly surprised there was a bottle of champagne on ice in our room upon our arrival with a nice card. So very sweet. I found the bed to be extremely comfy! So much so I meant to see what brand mattress it was but I forgot to look. Darn! The hotel itself is beautiful, I enjoyed walking through when we came and went. It was fun to browse the few shops. Although I was disappointed to not find anything with the St James logo on it, was hoping to buy a souvenir of some sort with the hotel logo (coffee mug or wine glasses?). Maybe I just missed seeing them if they have them? In all we enjoyed our stay and wandering throughout town for a few days. read more

Stayed in Clara's room and I don't think anything happened . Other reviewers complaining about stuff being old is laughable it's literally 150 yrs old what did you think?! I've been traveling all over and I have to say the sheets and pillows were the best I've had and I've been staying in hotels across the country for over a month. Upon arriving at this hotel you will see it from afar. It is a beautiful brick-built building that has been meticulously restored. The building has its own parking garage attached which makes it convenient. As you make your way through the brightly lit lobby you find yourself in well-decorated rooms holding antiques and Victorian furniture. The sight is very impressive and the wallpaper and carpet have vivid colors that attract the eyes. The check-in was a breeze and the person at the counter was very kind and friendly. I made my way to my room and explored the hotel along the way as if I were in a museum. My room was facing the river giving me a view of the water and train depot. Check-out took about 3 minutes and was very smooth. This hotel is located in a very good area with lots of shops, restaurants, and parks within walking distance. read more

Great place to stay in the downtown area! I like the old school look of the rooms and building. Although old, everything was in good shape, clean, and comfortable. The rooms have really comfortable bedding. To me, it was a step above the average chain hotels (Hilton, Marriott, etc.) Added pluses are that it's so close to awesome shops like Red Wings flagship store, a Duluth clothing store, and several local restaurants not to mention the Scarlet which is on the 1st floor. We really enjoyed our stay here last weekend while in town for a wedding - this hotel is super walkable to everything this cute little town offers and it was fun to be overlooking the farmers market and the train tracks (yes, the trains are loud, I get it, but it was really not that big of a deal!). While in Red Wing for a wedding of some close friends, we stayed at the historic St. James Hotel in downtown. It is a beautiful hotel with historical character and charm from original architecture from when it opened in 1875 to the service that makes you feel like family (including helping me when I locked myself out of our room). At the hotel they have a restaurant on the main floor and a speak-easy style bar in the basement. I ventured downstairs to get a cocktail from The Port. They have both specialty cocktails and authentic prohibition style cocktails - which I tried the latter. I had a Scofflaw cocktail that had Bulleit Rye Whiskey, Dry Vermouth, Lemon Juice, and Grenadine. Per the menu it was "created at Harry's NY Bar in Paris after a prize was offered for the best word to describe how people felt about Prohibition" and "it means a 'person who flouts the law' (or drinks illegally) and is a compound of the words 'scoff' and 'law'". Even with its cosmo-esque look, it is more along the lines of a manhattan / old fashioned hybrid substituting lemon citrus for orange. Oaky, vanilla, and large citrus flavors coalesce into an enjoyable cocktail. read more

The St. James Hotel is a flawless integration of a benignly haunted, authentically historic, and up-to-date modern property. I stayed in the Admiral Room that had 2 queen beds, 2 beautiful bay windows with Mississippi River views, 2 Wing back chairs, a vanity with an antique chair, a Keurig, a 5 Drawer Chest, a flat screen TV, a nightstand, a full size iron, a hairdryer and 2 robes. The walls are covered with patterned wallpaper that I would never choose but fits well with the date of build. The details on the woodwork, ceilings and corners all make the historian and the architect sit up and take notice! The beds were firm enough to be comfortable and had a nice softness to them. But the sheets! So soft...the bottom sheet was the softest brushed cotton but thick like on brand new sheets. The softest vellour-style-ish blanket was then in a sheet sandwich of these awesome soft, thick sheets making the MOST PERFECT blanket on Earth. Then the beautiful white bedspread was on top of that. The bathroom is dated, as is appropriate for the rooms. The toilet and sink fixtures are new. The bathtub was perfectly clean but definitely not new. There are two soap dishes built into the wall, one high and one low. It is a two knob system to get the temperature of the water correct. But there is a brand new quiet fan that worked beautifully. The provided toiletries are high quality and great smelling. There were 2 terry-cloth lined robes provided for our use. Being a women's shirt size XXXL, the robe only fit about 98% around my chest. The hotel is CLEAN, well-maintained and clearly driven by a customer service orientation. They will help you find the historic entrance, lobby, library and there is a self-guided tour if you are interested in everything that the hotel has to offer. The front desk agents are personable, cheerful and helpful. The room service agents are efficient and a pleasure to deal with! Speaking of room service, the food, OMG, the food from Scarlet, so amazing! (Review for food is under Scarlet Restaurant.) For my stay, I parked in the parking ramp that is behind the hotel. On Level B, I came across a very long row of handicap parking spots on one side of the concrete, so I figured I was on the best level to be on. When I approached the door, it had "lanterns" to either side. Opening the door, there was a choice of stairs or an elevator. Needing the handicap spot and a mobility Service Dog, I used the elevator. The Lobby level is listed clearly as such. After getting off the elevator, the Scarlet Restaurant is off to the back left but there is a long straight expanse in front. This leads you through a display area where a miniature St James Hotel in Gingerbread could be found (for Christmas). There is comfy seating for many! And there is also a split staircase with a chandelier. Pass all this and at the end, the front desk will be on your left. This is directly across from the current street entrance. Just passed this, on the right is a hallway. This goes to the historic street entrance. This area will be of interest to those looking for ghosts. The front desk is not original but the columns, the steps and the entrance are. The library allows anyone to practically hear the men swirling brandy in their snifters, puffing on their cigars and discussing the state of the country today. It is a magical place. read more

Had a lovely time staying at the St James Hotel in Red Wing! Came here with my folks for a cousins wedding and stayed the night here. It's very classy inside, I was surprised by how nice it was, it reminded me of the St Paul Hotel. We weren't able to check-in early because there are only 74 guest rooms and there were about 3 weddings happening at the same time. They have a bunch of shops and a restaurant or two in the hotel itself. The rooms are ornate, each has a theme or room style. Ours was called the Commodore and had two full beds in it with cute old school wallpaper that was a light red almost pink color and the room was facing the river which had an incredible view. The only downside is the train or trains, they honk at all periods of the night. We heard it at least 5 separate times that night and morning and woke us all up lol. It was like a fever dream because it was like the horn was in the actual room!! Beds were comfy, sheets were clean, shower had good shower pressure, bathrooms had fans (which surprisingly most hotels don't have now). Gotta love these older builds! We had cocktails at The Scarlet the first day after check-in and it was pretty busy. They may have been short staffed but they were actually turning people away because of how packed it was. My uncle was able to sneak in because we were already seated but they tried to turn him away in his suit lol, it was wild. Food looked and smelled amazing, would love to come back for lunch some day. Hosted our micro wedding here in February. The day was perfect! Loved that we could do almost everything on site, with the florist, baker, food, salon, all right there. The food and historic venue were above and beyond amazing. The rooms we stayed in were great, we had a regular room when we visited for our tasting and a suite the night before and of our wedding. The room and bathtub were PHENOMENAL! Only downside was there wasn't always perfectly smooth communication. The reservation staff didn't always know what was going on, the portal for payment didn't work very well, as we didn't get half of the payment invoices when we were supposed to. Sometimes responses took a week to some of our questions, and the day before the wedding the onsite staff didn't know we had asked for a room to be locked with our stuff, but it was all ultimately taken care of. read more

We stayed here for two nights to celebrate my birthday in late December 2020. It was a great getaway from our ordinary COVID quarantine. Far enough and unique enough from the Twin Cities to feel like you're on vacation. Most amenities in the hotel were closed, including the spa and bars. The restaurant was open for takeout or room service. There is an extra charge for room service or you can walk down and pick it up. There was pretty much nobody else in the hotel, or at least they stayed in their rooms. We saw one group of people our entire stay. We did do some exploring since this was our first time staying here. There are tons of photographs, plaques, and historical display along the walls. We spent some time walking through and hunting for the rumored ghosts. We did not find any. I even spent time alone reading in a chair in the basement and still no ghosts. Which is fine by me! The building is beautiful and decorated very well especially for the holidays. The room was spacious yet cozy. We both loved the bath robes which were great to hangout in since there was nowhere to go during COVID! I would love to come back when more of it is open and get the full experience. The only reason I took off a star was because I felt the service was a bit lack luster. It wasn't bad, but for such a beautiful hotel, I was just expecting a little more. We really only had a few small interactions with the staff. When I originally called to make a reservation they said their system was down and to check Expedia for openings. Seemed kinda weird. When we ordered room service for breakfast the woman on the phone sounded taken aback that I asked what drinks they offered. There are no drinks listed on their menu. After a few seconds of speechlessness she finally let me know they have a full bar. I ordered mimosas, and was then informed we could get them by the pitcher. (It was my bday so of course I went with the pitcher.) I'm not normally a room service kinda girl, so maybe I'm just naive for not knowing what drinks they have. Such an eerie creepy historic hotel! I had the opportunity to stay here for my aunts surprise birthday party. Small little fact, my great uncle used to own the hotel. Ended up staying in the king suite End that is the top floor of rooms. The actual top floor has an amazing bar where you can be served up just about any drink you can imagine. Worst hotel room I have been in. The wallpaper is so old the seams are separating, and you can see where a picture used to hang. Filfthy window overlooking a river boat (so much for the view I paid for), something splattered on the wall, and the room smelled so bad I had to go to a store to get some air freshener. Wouldn't put my bare feet on the carpet unless there was a fire. No mini fridge either. I get this is an old historic hotel, but for the price you pay you would expect a much better experience and a room that isn't just plain gross. Time for a remodel. " We Had A Nice Visit " We were walking around the Red Wing areas in town and decided to walk in and see the St.James Hotel because so many people had told us about it. A lot of people told us it was haunted and said there was alot of historical stories about it. We saw Jimmy's Bar which is gorgeous, and they have entertainment on Friday nights. The Veranda Restaurant for breakfast was excellent. We looked at The Port Restaurant which is where people go for dinner. The coffee shop on main floor has free refills on Starbucks coffee. The St. James also has some fun shops and a spa to enjoy. And there are lot's of fun shops & restaurants within walking distance of hotel. I booked a Deluxe Queen room at the St James for the weekend. When we checked into our room our bed was a full size not a queen as advertise. I complained to the hotel clerk for some kind adjustment to our bill and was told that they couldn't do anything. When I talked to a supervisor she also said nothing could be done. This is a nice small town location if you are wanting to stay within an hour or so of Minneapolis or are visiting Red Wing. The building has some history and character but some of the furnishings and fixtures are a bit worn out given its years. The bathroom was large but the sink cabinet was a fake wood laminate that was peeling and looked terrible. The beds were a bit soft. It was a hot day and the AC worked great in our room! They have an old entrance with high ceilings and a baby grand piano that room would be great if turned into a bar - that could really drive traffic to this place. read more

Bad service! Called and asked to rent bicycles and was quoted $5. And asked for a late check out. Was told that I could check out at 1:00. Ten minutes later got a call telling me that his supervisor told him that bikes would cost $25 each and that we would have to check out at 12:30. Building exterior and history is very nice. The interior and room were a bit of a let down. Didn't feel very clean and maintenance/update is desperately needed. I understand in the times of Covid that things may be slim, but these are longstanding issues that need to be taken care of. Room service carts sat in hallway for a couple of days. Bathroom update looks like it was done about 30 years ago and on the cheap. Bathtub didn't drain. The bed was awful, as well as pillows. The check in staff was courteous, but only seemed to want to discuss what to do if the tv was on the fritz. Lots of little things that add up to just not being worth the price for what you are expecting. The Scarlet Kitchen and Bar on-site were excellent, both service and food and newly updated. read more

Wow! Me and my honey were looking for some adventure and so decided to make a little trip, last min. Red Wing was our chosen destination as was St. James Hotel. We knew nothing about this hotel so when we ended up back in our hotel room after having visited Jimmy's pub, we began hearing odd noises within the wall of our room that were not sounds we could locate logically. My honey mentioned jokingly "wonder if this place is haunted?". I was like "noooo, that's silly." We stayed in RM 202. Btw, we didn't sleep a wink. All night felt like someone was watching us. Not our imaginations either. Well at least we don't think so. After planting seeds to look up the hotel on google, just for sheer curiosity-sake, so we did. Turns out we walked right into our desire for some adventure. The hotel apparently haunted!! We did some research on hotel while staying the night. We literally were led to look for information BECAUSE WE FIRST HEARD STRANGE NOISES IN OUR ROOM to then find it is a well known haunted place. Actually one of the TOP haunted places in Minnesota and including in our country! How cool is that?! Before I summarize briefly the research we uncovered, I want to touch upon our thoughts on the hotel and what it has to offer guests on a more grounded, of this world perspective. The hotel is very classy, has a touch of old world charm, and very clean. There are open rooms on the first floor to venture into to see time frozen, of life back in the late 1800's. There is a gathering room where I'm sure the men mingled and also a place where a vintage piano still sits. The walls of the hotel going up the historic stairs is lined with faces from the hotels early days. Very nice touch to bring the past into the present for guests who are curious about the history of this place. The staff are absolutely delightful, helpful and informative. The part that's quite intriguing is that on our adventure researching Hotel and Mary is that we found that the city restaurants of Red Wing, spring 2017, did NOT have appealing food. At all. The food in other restaurants in town was VERY poor quality. It's almost as if Mary Lambert, from her grave or upon her death cursed the town of Red Wing's restaurant business in not being allowed to rise to her praised cooking reputation, as there is no good restaurants outside of St James Hotel. Very nice accommodations and a gorgeous historical setting. Front desk ladies were quite curt at check in though, which struck us as odd because everyone else that we met in Red Wing was just incredibly nice and hospitable. We left a brand new jacket in the wooden wardrobe by accident when we checked out and called the front desk twice and the acted like they couldn't be bothered. They said "nothing was turned in" and acted like that was that. When I asked them to inquire with their cleaning staff they said if they staff had found it they would've turned it in. They said "we have a strict policy with our cleaning staff" as if to say there was a zero percent chance a cleaner would've kept the jacket, which is a tough one to swallow in 2020. Aside from the jacket, it was just unfortunate to be treated like they could take or leave our business. We had such a great time in Red Wing that we wanted to make this an annual stay, but because of the staff's attitude, that won't be happening. Very disappointed. read more

St James Hotel restaurant was a delight! My significant other and I ventured to Red Wing for the day. We hiked, shopped, and ate delightful food. We sat on the outdoor patio at St. James Hotel to eat lunch. The ambience was cute and quaint. I appreciated the various seating options and all the beautiful flowers. Our server was friendly and attentive. We shared the veggie flatbread as an appetizer. The flatbread was delicious with the right amount of crispness. For the main course, I had the salmon salad and my significant other had the walleye sandwich. The salmon in the salad was delicious! I grabbed a couple of fries from my significant other's plate and those were delicious as well. They were more than just your average French fries. To drink, I had a cucumber margarita which was refreshing! I definitely enjoyed my visit to the St. James Hotel restaurant and I look forward to visiting again in the future. read more

I would have given this hotel 4 stars but took off 3 due to high hidden hold fees and a total lack of communication from the manager. I requested a call or message from him each of four days and never received a reply. I was in Red Wing for our organization's training as a temporary employee so I don't have a business credit card. I paid my own way to be refunded later. During our crowded check in, the manager asked me to sign a paper agreeing to put a hold on my card for the room. Standard stuff. The slip listed the total for 4 nights at $394.00 which I expected (room and taxes). It wasn't until I went to the local grocer and had my card declined at checkout that I discovered the hotel had put a hold on my card for $729.00. Being on a very tight budget this brought my balance down to $0.00. I don't usually carry cash but luckily had $70.00 in my wallet. However, that doesn't get you far in Red Wing. I had to budget less than $14.00 per day for food, drinks, and tax. While I waited for a call from the manager, I was resouceful. For breakfast, I used the Keurig to heat water for instant oatmeal. I made Carnation instant breakfast with boxed almond milk that I kept on the air conditioner. For lunch, I ate at the Mexican Market around the corner, one of the cheapest places in town. I got two delicious, healthy vegetarian tacos for under $10. To change it up, I got a malted shake from Bev's for lunch for under $3.50, supplemented with a pack of Cheetos, a couple pieces of broccoli, and a small packet of hummus dip courtesy of my office snack table. I splurged on pasta one night but mostly had peanut butter and jelly, so was always plenty full before bed. After learning the hold was more than I signed, I looked through my luggage to find the slip so I could find out if I was mistaken. The slip was nowhere to be found so I went to the front desk for a copy. The employee said I never received one because they don't give them out. When I asked for a copy of the one she was holding, she called her boss, who told her she wasn't allowed to give them out. A printer was visible behind their counter, but since they weren't permitted to use it, I took a picture of the slip. That's why I am able to share the following. The employee pointed to a bunch of fine-print (8 font) conditions at the bottom of the slip and said they were allowed to put an extra charge on my card. I had signed my initials there, after all. To their credit, on the 4th of 7 conditions, it does say "I hereby authorize this establishment to communicate with my credit card carrier for the purpose of setting aside Any amount of money for the charges of the routine stay plus Any incremental amount." They could have put a hold for $5000 which would be perfectly legal. The employee said they verbally inform customers at check-in that the hotel will be putting an additional hold on their card for $75 a night, but with 40 co-workers behind me waiting to check in, it was like a party, and I have trouble distinguishing conversations in background noise. I'm sure I'm not the only customer who is hard of hearing, and for this reason as well as simple customer courtesy, holds for "miscellaneous fees" should be calculated and written on the hold slip that customers sign. In other words, I should not have been asked to sign for $394 when the hold is actually $729. I can't recall any other hotels ever conducting business this way. I hoped to speak to the manager to discuss this perspective and ask him to request that the hotel change their invoice policy to include customer's full hold amount on each hold slip; however, the manager never called. What a gem! I've stayed at this historical hotel a few times and love the history. The rooms all have MN themes, antique furniture and charming decorations. The place is a lot bigger than it looks with lots of spaces for meetings, events and casual conversation. There are 3 different restaurants and I loved sitting in front of the fir enjoying some wine by the fireplace. Also several shops which look like they have some cool things but I haven't been inside to check them out. The view of the river is amazing, the trains can be a little loud but add to the historical ambiance. I have only been here in the winter so I can imagine the outdoor seating overlooking the river is amazing! read more

My wife and I stayed at the St. James this Saturday night, on a bed & breakfast package that she received from her employer. The building is full of 19th century charm which makes it fun to just simply walk around. I especially enjoyed the portraits of the mustachioed and bearded gents that apparently had importance to the original hotel (investors perhaps?). The front-desk staff was friendly, and I saw that they even cater weddings on location. Our room had a huge vaulted ceiling, and wallpaper that I imagine must have been commonplace a century ago, but still included all the amenities of a more modern establishment. The bed was amazingly comfortable, although I wish the windows had "blackout" blinds, because light poured in come morning. The only thing that did not mesh with the hotel was their restaurant, the Veranda. The service was quite poor, and the food was not much better. My omelet looked like something I would make at home (I'm not a good cook btw). Oh well, at least it was included in our package, but my recommendation would be to go elsewhere. read more

This is going to make me sound crazy (well I am :). I have stayed here twice, years apart. The 1st time was with my husband for our anniversary. We had a suite, the bathroom was crazy! SO HUGE, and just stunning! Really nice plush robes, the tub was gigantic! There was a turn down service at night & a menu for pillow choices! And a chocolate :) He gave me a brochure to the spa to chose my service, but silly hubbie didn't know that they book out months at a time. We had a wonderful time! 2nd trip. We took our youngest here for Easter, the brunch was very nice, But, the room we had with 2 full sized beds, I don't remember the floor it was on, was haunted. I know this is where I sound crazy. My son and husband continuously had to wake me up, because I was screaming in my sleep, all night long. I never do that. I remember an evil presence was standing by my bedside. I don't think I'm brave enough to go back, but if your a ghost hunter check it out lol I did really enjoy everything besides that scary part! read more

Ate in the "Port" aka the basement restaurant. Strange for MN menu and equally strange food. I wanted to like it a great deal but ended up just mildly happy about the food. Desert and coffee were great but the Filet Mignon was overpriced and it under-delivered. Great, great service. But ... read more
