Legacy Hill Farm - Legacy Hill Farm Couple Kissing in the Aisle at Ceremony Site | Photo Credit: Carly Mac Photography

An absolutely stunning place for a wedding! Came here for an October wedding, and I absolutely fell…read morein love with the rustic farm vibe. The little barn houses, the field, everything was inviting and elegant, yet rustic and homey. The outdoor ceremony area was also great, with benches set up, a beautiful gate for the married couple to walk in through, etc. The staff were super atttentive and friendly. My only gripe was that they did not seem well equipped to handle super cold weather (there were some blankets) but the ceremony was super chilly and I wish the heat was turned on more in the dining area.

I had arrived early to get ready at the bridal suite which was in one of the little buildings. It had the restrooms inside on the first floor & the bridal suite on the second. There were only three of us bridesmaids, but even with others stopping in to see the bride, there was plenty of room to get ready. The best part was that there was a lot of natural lighting & lots of mirrors for us to use. I didn't see the grooms suite but there was a separate building for that as well! The wedding ceremony area had luscious grass with seating benches for the guests & big wooden doors for a grand entrance. It was nice for the wedding party to be able walk down & then have a pause (with doors closed) as the bride stepped up for her entrance. The reception was then held inside the big barn building just off to the side from the ceremony. The space was large with wooden tables & chairs set up for guests. Although we didn't use it, there was a firepit next to the building for use as well! Drinks & appetizers were served before the reception started at the side barn building. It was just a few feet away from the main reception. My favorite though, was the barn space that was first seen when entering the venue from the parking lot. Our friends had opted to utilize it for photos to put inside the guest book! Overall, a cute venue. Since I was a guest, I don't know any of the logistics of touring / reserving the space but my friend (the bride) did say that they're booked up pretty much every weekend!

    Villa Maria - Inside

We were all roasting inside, we had to open windows and it wasn't even a hot day, I think it was 70°F outside. Some windows were sealed so most of us decided to stand outside after we finished eating. Also, there's no real bar area-- if you want to grab a drink you're already blocking access to the venue because you're in the hallway. Bathrooms are about half a block away from the venue, this made it hard for family members that walk with a cane. Going to the restroom and coming back was like a 30 minute journey round trip. I don't recommend to book this venue in the summer or if you have many family members that need assistance while walking.

Villa Maria was the WORST part of planning a wedding. The venue is under extreme construction and…read morewe really had to dress the place up! My husband and I spontaneously found Villa Maria back in Feb 2021. Our initial tour was with John Rupp (owner) and Eduardo (groundskeeper). Before our first tour, we had thoughts of eloping or doing a small wedding since we knew weddings today in the post-COVID world would be insane and stressful to plan. During our tour, John definitely overpromised us many amenities we did not get. This is the most frustrating part. The only reason we picked Villa Maria as our venue was because John made it sound like it would be all-inclusive for a great package price. For example, John promised us these things would be ready on our wedding day and accessible for our use: the bridal cottage, grooms suite, great hall, courtyard, lower basement, ALL the hotel suites, in house catering, and in house bar. Really... he sold us on his "go getter" personality. He owns other gorgeous properties in the MLPS area such as the University Club, 310 hotel... etc. This was great news to us since that meant we would be in contact with people who strictly worked at Villa Maria and John would get the amenities done in time (we were so wrong). We signed the contract with the (then) e-mail coordinator(?) Julia Strauve and that in itself was a nightmare. She sent over contracts, bar, and food information from John's other property, the University Club. We had to point out many missing items in the contract. About 1-2 months later, Julia was no longer our point of contact for Villa Maria and we were reassigned to Amanda Northrup. Amanda was very sweet, timely, communicative, and eager to help couples with any questions or concerns they have with planning. Along the way, she would send out newsletters to couples getting married at Villa Maria. My husband and I looked forward to these at the time since we got to see photos of the finished bridal cottage and courtyard. About 2 months before the wedding, Amanda went radio silent and we didn't know why until another bride told us she was fired. Our emails to events@cwcos.com went unanswered up until our wedding day. This was SO stressful. Additionally, there was no event staff or anyone at the venue to tell us what we can/can't do. There is only the two groundskeepers: Eduardo & Marta. Eduardo & Marta were very sweet and helpful the day before and of the wedding. Honestly, they are the only GOOD interaction we had with the venue. I really hope they are getting paid double of whatever they currently are. It takes a special pair to have to deal with the indecisiveness and changes of the venue. Unfortunately, we also weren't made aware of the fact that we would no longer have in-house catering or bar until March 2022- which is VERY late. We quickly reached out to ALL caterers and beverages in the STATE of Minnesota and 90% of them were already booked for our wedding date! This was EXTREMELY stressful and rendered us so much extra time and money just to find a caterer and bar. Additionally, we had to scramble to find a room block- thankfully we found one with Lake City's AmericInn- but it was not the tier of hotel we wanted our guests to stay in. On another note: I was so happy the bridal cottage was completed but WOW, that house is DIRTY everywhere. The toilet looks like someone left pee in it for years, the bathroom shower stall was difficult-almost impossible to open, the floors of the ENTIRE house was so dirty, my feet were BLACK within the first hour of walking around without shoes. Make sure you bring slippers. There were dead bugs EVERYWHERE, especially in the back room where the bridal party is suppose to get ready and in the Great Hall. I think this venue has a lot of potential, but it really shouldn't be open to weddings until they have their logistics down, less construction, and more employees ONSITE. Regardless of all of the hassle we had to deal with, we do look back on our wedding day fondly only because we had wonderful vendors, families, and friends that helped make our day beautiful and memorable. It will be interesting to come back in a few years to see if there are any updates. For now, book your wedding with caution in mind.

Sheldon Theatre - Stunning theater. Waiting for Dessa to take the stage.

All the World's a Stage…read more.. ...but you'll find the best performances at the TB Sheldon. Set your phones to silent, grab some popcorn, and peek with me behind the red velvet curtains of this historic theater. Affectionately known by locals as "The Jewel Box" of Red Wing, the Sheldon's impressively ornate interior would upstage that of many other theaters. The lobby makes a dramatic entrance, and the auditorium steals the show with gorgeous murals, and gold and ivory plaster sculptures adorning the walls. The Sheldon's history is as dramatic as its decor, the building having survived two fires and an explosion that blew off the roof. Opening its doors in 1904, it hosted Vaudeville shows travelling through from Chicago to Minneapolis in its early years, and later converted to a movie house. Now it showcases live performances and lectures, as well as playing classic movies like Gone with the Wind. I fondly remember performing here in my teens, electricity in the air as we waited for our cue, hoping not to break a leg en pointe. Most recently I watched the amazing musical Glensheen here, and it brought down the house! A Sheldon experience is always magical for the audience and performers alike. This theater is a destination unto itself, and is certainly a tough act to follow. I give it 5 rounds of applause!

I've been wanting to get to a show for the last year and we finally got tickets to an Andy and Bing Christmas. Mick Sterling and Ben Utecht hosted the event with toe-tapping songs throughout the night. I haven't seen Mick since he was signing Joe Cocker's 'You Can Leave Your Hat On' at Bunkers Bar. It was great to hear his voice again. They played for at least two hours with a small intermission. Great show. The theatre is beautiful and so full of character. The intimacy of the place makes any seat a great one. I'll definitely be back for another show.

But we still enjoyed it. Though I was glad the outdoor dining area was not open yet because it wouldn't have felt as private in our room with that area being part of the view. Please keep in mind that this is a historical hotel so the rooms are odd angles. The bathroom was very small and the toilet sat angled in front of the vanity, so it was a little cramped to try to stand in front of the mirror/sink to get ready (hair, makeup, etc.). I absolutely adored that the room numbers outside the room are vintage post office box doors. The trains blow their whistles a lot at night passing through and this woke us up each night, so keep that in mind if you are a light sleeper. We enjoy trains and liked seeing them (so that is a pro/con, we liked the trains, just not at night when sleeping). We were there for our anniversary and I was pleasantly surprised there was a bottle of champagne on ice in our room upon our arrival with a nice card. So very sweet. I found the bed to be extremely comfy! So much so I meant to see what brand mattress it was but I forgot to look. Darn! The hotel itself is beautiful, I enjoyed walking through when we came and went. It was fun to browse the few shops. Although I was disappointed to not find anything with the St James logo on it, was hoping to buy a souvenir of some sort with the hotel logo (coffee mug or wine glasses?). Maybe I just missed seeing them if they have them? In all we enjoyed our stay and wandering throughout town for a few days.
