So the restaurant is classy and pretty with wood and dark accents. Menu was interesting. Food was good. Service was not. I couldn't help but feel that even though for the three of us, (one being my kid) with an over 100 buck bill that we were treated poorly. Not sure if it was the kid in the wheelchair that made our server uncomfortable. Or that we didn't look like we were spending money. But I hate being treated second class. Especially since the table next to you with two business looking people are being treated way better by the same server. I am not going into the food because honestly after the treatement I am not sure if I can give an honest review. I am sure the seafood is fress. The spicy tuna tartare looks amazing. Get some training on your staff on how to treat ALL customers equally. I don't recommend eating here. read more

My host took me here on my 1st night in town. What a cute place. It was a bit noisy though. I had a delicious spinach salad with charbroiled scallops and shrimp plus house made Boursin cheese. They forgot the dressing on salad but I ate 1/2 of it before I ever asked for the dressing bc it was so good. With business in a previous life taking me to Moncton as much as once or twice a month for a handful of nights at a time, the Hotel St-James has been incredible as my home away from home. Its hideaway location on a central side street in downtown Moncton always offers a sense of separation from the workday and its luxurious interior made me feel like I was living in a spa. I've stayed in all of their rooms except for the large suite and have had a hard time picking my favourites. One room on the main floor - right next to the lobby - boasts a gorgeous deep tub next to the bed that makes for a heavenly descent into relaxation where you never have to be more than one step away from falling into your king size sleeping arrangements. Other rooms offer a sleek and stylized shower fully stocked with gorgeous shampoos, conditioners and body wash. Small touches like jazz bar music playing by the time you check in to your room, to a modest but manageable continental breakfast in the lobby by morning, the St-James makes consistent efforts to go the extra mile. And with a popular (and delicious) restaurant on the ground floor that also serves room service, you're never far from everything you need to survive in style. The downside? Noise. The bar downstairs hosts live music almost every night of the week and the reverberations do make it tough to get any shut-eye. You know it's bad when the hotel staff leave earplugs on your pillow at night. read more

This was my first visit here and I can honestly say I will definitely be back. The food was excellent, the portions were good, and the service was great. The atmosphere was nice, now I'm not an interior decorator so I don't really know what you would call it, but it had the plaster cracked wall look, with rod iron light's/decorations, with dimmed lighting. Now the only thing was it can get a little loud, but there isn't much they can do about that due to the size. It's not cramped, but you couldn't ballroom dance either. Another nice thing is that they have live music on Thursday nights which is a bonus if your out later on. So in closing if like the pub atmosphere, with both pub food and more upper class cuisine I don't think you'll be disappointed. read more

Great beer selection and a nice patio (albeit some loud cars and motorcycles cruising on a Wednesday night downtown Moncton on the patio!) I ordered the IPA (forget the name). Had a light dinner of the Summer salad which was a great blend of melon, goat cheese, almond crunch and spinach with a nice dressing. I felt it was appropriate to add a new page for the restaurant St. James' Gate as opposed to keeping the hotel (L'Hotel St James) and pub as one entity on yelp. I didn't stay at the hotel but only went to the pub. Nice pub atmosphere with halfway decent beer selection. Finally, a bar in Canada that serves REAL IPA. No Alexander Keith IPA crap. I look for this trait often, but rarely find it. Service was friendly. Food was pretty good. Lots of seafood options, but I question the emphasis on maple syrup in some of the dishes. While I like maple syrup, not sure it is the best thing to put on top of halibut. I understand maple syrup is a big thing in the area, but that doesn't make it the best option available. I still enjoyed it though. Mussels and escargot were also good. Definitely a must try if you are in Moncton. read more

this is a review for the hotel. We had a terrible experience. There was no water in the shower, the ac didn't work and the phone was out of order. the desk clerk did what she could for us which we appreciate. The hotel should be closed until they fix their hot water problems. I won't stay here again, especially since I can go down the street and get a room with a working shower for a slightly lower price. The staff here was so friendly and welcoming! The ambiance, music and food are outstanding and I'd highly recommend going for lunch or supper. We enjoyed cocktails that were very lovely as well!! We have stayed at the Hotel St-James twice - both times in the large suite. Both visits were really enjoyable. It's got a comfy bed, a hubba-hubba glass shower, a crazy big bathtub, flatscreens in both rooms and the cushiest bathrobes ever. It also has excellent breakfast options. No overpriced continental breakfast garbage here - for 10 bucks or less you have your choice of five delicious breakfasts delivered to your room between 7:30 and 9:30. With the pub located downstairs, it's super convenient in terms of grabbing a bite to eat or taking in live music. It isn't the best location for children (no high chairs in the restaurant, noisy if a band is playing) but it's my favourite place to stay in Moncton. read more

Being a tourist is an important part of anyone's economy. We visited this bar and a bouncer with an attitude did not like our western exuberance. This was the worst experience I have ever had while travelling. At 2 in the morning a man using a key card broke into our room!! He shouldered the door several times trying to break the safety latch. We both started yelling at him, to which he replied that the computer said the room was vacant. He was obviously a hotel employee. The young woman at the desk when we checked out the next morning said she would leave a note for the manager (obviously room break ins aren't considered a priority here), and we have yet to hear from anyone at the hotel. Also, the room had no curtains on the window so was brightly lit all night, the band playing in the bar downstairs was ridiculously loud, and the shower juts out into the room with a full length glass "wall" so you can watch your travelling companion as they shower and use the toilet. An awful place. Go anywhere else than here. read more

I'm a pilot and travel extensive. Found this place on yelp. Service was ok but the sitting area was loud and the menu was a little pricey. Ordered the seafood soup and it was ok. A lot of work as the soup had shelled mussels and shrimp with tails. Also had the seafood risotto and it was watery and again the shrimp had shells on it....too much work. Ordered the beet salad to go, it was tiny for $10! Probably wouldn't recommend this place. Maybe it wAs an off day but for Moncton it's expensive. read more

Amazing Gem that I had no idea about. Hotel was so clean and the room was a great size with a huge stand up shower. They even offer a complimentary glass of wine when you check in. Restaurant below has great food and even better service. Live music and whisky to finish off a long day, couldn't be more pleased with this place. #1 on my list for Moncton when I'm here for work. read more

I finally made it to St James Gate pub last night with some collegues and I was impressed! A small, quaint Irish style pub located on Church Street in Moncton hit the spot for a fun night out. The pub is dimmly lit at night providing a nice atmosphere for a group of friends or a 'date night' out with your significant other. The crowd was mixed with young and old with a noise level you would expect after 8pm. St James Gate also has live music but unfortunatley we left just as the band was going to play ( I look forward to going back and listening to some live tunes!). There was three in our group and we ordered appetizers to share: smoked salmon - comes with slices of fresh rye bread, a tangy spread and capers. I usually don't like capers buty they accompanied the dish nicely! We also had the calamari strips with tzatziki sauce on the side - this was the first time I have had calamari cooked this way (in strips) - to be honest they were a bit too fried, I was hoping for a lighter, crisper batter but I would try them again to see if it was just an off night :) We then enjoyed mussels in blue cheese & apple cream sauce - the sauce was to die for!! Unfortunatley the mussels themselves were a bit on the small side - however if you're from the maritmes you know that sometimes mussels are a hit/miss in size, depending on the season. I would order these again as the sauce was amazing for dipping bread!! Lastly we enjoyed a cheese plate - this was a great way to end the 'meal' (You could easily have this as an app or a finish to a meal). The cheese plate came with fresh smoked gouda, brie and spiced havarati with unique and flavourful crackers / bread for spreading the cheese. For the night, we all enjoyed 2 bottles of red wine which was the perfect combianation for our choice of appetizers. All in all I am looking forward to trying more of the food menu / drinks here and heading out with some friends or my boyfriend to enjoy the live music they have!! read more

So, we have stayed in many hotels across Canada, USA and Europe. In all my years I have never experienced a more bizarre hotel. The furnishings were nice, if about standard for a hotel and the appearance seemed positive, clean and reasonably well organized. However, there were some incredibly unusual design choices and management decisions. To start with, the room we were in (and as we discovered, EVERY room bar two which were occupied) had been redesigned to have an "open and romantic feeling". Apparently, Moncton defines open and romantic as having torn down the wall blocking the view of the washroom, and replacing it with a sheet of COMPLETELY see through glass. If you, wonderful reader, cannot picture this then think of all the things you do in the bathroom, ranging from the normal, to the weird being visible to your room companion. I love my girlfriend very much, and she returns the feelings completely, but there are certain things I do not need to know about her and her business in the bathroom. She feels the same way about me, no doubt. I cannot conceive of the business meeting that happened wherein people were sitting around brainstorming ideas and some GENIUS thought "OH FUCK, let's make everyone's shitting, pissing and showering visible to their room companion." Like... WHAT THE FUCK. I am confused as to that particular design decision and think that it demonstrates a real lack of "connection" with human sensitivities and basic fucking common sense. It is also baffling to learn that only two rooms have private bathrooms. What possesses a human being to think that a guest might wish to observe their partner's bowel movements? Anyways, that was a bit of a mindfuck to be fair, but we were prepared to suffer through that except for the little nugget of information that our delightful concierge imparted to us as we negotiated with her regarding our situation. She, however, was extremely sympathetic, helpful and friendly and her service was the reason this hotel does not get a zero across the board. She went out of her way to call other hotels and find us a room. Thumbs up. However, as promised, I will reveal the nugget of information with which she graced us. This "boutique hotel" (wtf is a boutique hotel by the way?) was situated over a bar and had live music blasting five nights a week until very late in the morning. This is not an ideal situation for a couple who has to be up early and has been driving all day (8 hours +). I am somewhat bewildered as to the reasons why a hotel would not make it clear that they preferred a weird public toilet facility and had live music blasting until all hours of the evening. Either way, it was just a baffling experience and there was no mention anywhere we could see of such a bizarre design plan for a hotel. All in all, unless you want to watch your partner do their "business" and listen to live music all night, I would suggest going pretty much anywhere else. This type of hotel might appeal to some folks, but I think it's only fair that potential guests know the truth of exactly what this hotel is about. It is not normal by any standards. read more
