Tried them this afternoon and we were not disappointed. We didn't order adult beverages, unusual for us, so I can't rate the drinks. I did order my old standby, a club soda with fresh lime. The soda was perfect, served with plenty of fresh limes. (A lot of restaurants can't even get good club soda out to you.) Before we were snuggled into our seats, we had fresh tortilla chips and three salsas on the table. A little runny, but delicious. The red and green salsas were delicious. The uber hot, orange sauce was too spicy for us. But, a connoisseur of really hot sauce, might find it delicious. Our waitress was awesome. Attentive, cheerful and efficient. I was thirsty. My club soda and new limes were kept full, without asking. Our chip basket was kept fresh and full. She saw that my nose was running from trying the uber hot salsa, and without asking, she brought me a huge stack of napkins. We ordered the chunky guacamole, as an appetizer. It was very good, but needed much more avocado, to make it worth the $6.49 price tag. Then we ordered the Nachos Mexicanos and Plato Mexicanos. TONS of delicious food were set down on our table. We went ahead and asked for a to go box. The best item was the chili relleno. The BEST we've EVER had. The tamale, Mexican taco, chalupa, beans, rice and nachos were outstanding. The chicken enchilada was ordinary, at best. We'll DEFINITELY go back. We got STUFFED, had excellent service and brought home a huge to go box. This is a family favorite. It's not gourmet Mexican food but it's a great standby favorite. Mexican tacos never disappoint. You can order Mexican style on corn tortillas with onions, lime and cilantro only or American style with the lettuce and cheese style and I think you can get either hard shell or flour tortilla that way. Barbacoa Tacos Mexican style is our favorite. Salsas are all outstanding. The green salsa is our family favorite. Chicken Torta is to die for! Never disappoints. So yummy and the bread is always very pillowy and the perfect vehicle for this sandwich. There are other flavors you can order, but I always go back to the Chicken Torta as a favorite. Empanadas are good, even the veggie version. We have some vegetarians in the family and we've verified on countless occasions that the beans have no lard. What I've always been disappointed in is the salad options. I've tried them all and not a one is up to par. I've just resigned myself to never having salad here. I've tried both locations and while the one on Tallassee was the original location, during the summer, the AC is horrible. Since I don't want to sweat while I eat unless it's because of hot sauce, I'll alway choose this Atlanta Hwy location. The restaurant is large and service is always fast and friendly. Perfect for families. The location on Tallassee is great for ordering and pick up although they always get confused by my order of the green salsa. I have to remind them to give me chips for this every time. And the green salsa is pricey at $5-6 for a 12-16 oz container. Otherwise their prices are very reasonable. read more

This is one of the best places to go for Mexican food. I love their Taco salad with steak, rice, guacamole, tomatoes and cheese. The shells are fresh, crispy and delicious. I ate at Sr. Sol for the first time about a week ago, and I was pleasantly surprised at this Mexican restaurant. From the road, it doesn't look like much, but inside, it is nicely decorated and the service was excellent. When we sat down, we were given chips and three different types of salsas, which were delicious. One was the traditional salsa they give you everywhere, and the other two were a cilantro and a chipotle, which were more spicy than the first. Very good. We also had cheese dip, which was just white cheese that resembled all other cheese dips I've had. I ordered the chicken burrito, which comes with sour cream, beans, "special sauce" (really just an enchilada-like sauce), veggies, and cheese in a flour tortilla. I requested they leave out some ingredients, and while the first one they gave me still had everything in it, once I made my server aware of the issue, she was attentive and quickly fixed it for me. A second location for Sr. Sol?!? Located across from the new Blind Pig Tavern on Broad, parking is easier than the other location, the wait staff was super attentive, but the food... ah, the food... The awesomely marinated asada (steak) in my soft taco, tasty ground beef in my hard taco, and the spicy pork in the tamal almost made me cry due to extreme yumminess. On a side note, if you hate sour cream, you might need to ask a few times for them **not** to put it on various items, but we're used to that. Summary: Go to Sr. Sol. Eat yummy food. This is the best Mexican food in Athens. We eat here at least once a week and the staff all recognize us and say hello every time. One of the waitresses adores my son and makes it a point to come over and say hello to him (and us, too). The food is WONDERFUL and very, very consistent. My roommate introduced this restaurant to me during my freshman year here at UGA, and since then it has easily been my favorite restaurant in Athens. Sr. Sol's has the most authentic Mexican food in Athens, and just makes you feel at home and relaxed. When you walk in you see college students celebrating the end of test week, families celebrating birthdays, and even older couples going on a date night- and it just feels like home. Their claim to fame is definitely the chips and salsa. The chips are always hot, and they bring out three salsas for you to try. One is a pretty regular salsa, the second is a more spicy/tomato-y salsa, and the third is a very spicy salsa verde. I love their arroz con pollo- finally a restaurant that doesn't skimp on the cheese sauce! Nachos, enchiladas, and burritos are also always very satisfying. Birthday celebrations here are great, and the staff here are very friendly and always recognize their customers. Love Sr. Sol's and would recommend it to anyone! read more

I'm going back there tonight. I literally have days marked on my calendar where I have given myself permission to eat here because if not, I would eat here every single meal. Seriously. So freaking delicious. I got their tacos with pastor and barbacoa. Good decision, me! Their meat is marinated to perfection and they are NOT cheap with the amount of meat they put on those little tortillas! There was a Yelper who wrote an ode to the green sauce and now I see why. Their house salsa was pretty awesome too (and spicy- not your typical pico de gallo)! The pastor was amazing and slightly fatty (did they sneak some bacon in there?) and their barbacoa was spicy and slightly smoky and everything was enhanced by the presence of chopped onions and cilantro. Most authentic Mexican food I've ever had! Everything is delicious - I've tried everything from Nachos to Tortas to Mexican (and American) tacos to desserts and all sorts of burritos. I've never left without leftovers since the portions are huge and I end up filling up quickly on the delicious chips and salsa. The service is always quick and attentive - they even wear cute outfits related to the Mexican theme. The margaritas are nice and strong and always pairs well with my favorites, the Mexican tacos. My friends and I love it because they offer more than just chicken, fish, beef, and pork in their food. I think they had pork belly and beef tongue- it sounds odd but they're unique and quite tasty! We were greeted as soon as we walked in & sat immediately. Less than a minute after being seated our chips & salsa arrived along with our server. Our server, April, was amazing & gave us Excellent service from beginning to end. She took our drink & food order promptly & everything was perfect. My husband ordered the #1 combo...Delicious! I ordered the Camarones Diablo (which is one of my favorites to order when it's on someone menu)....Fantastic! No complaints what so ever. Ate here a few days ago. I have always gone to the original location so wanted to try the bigger restaurant. We came on a busy night on Mexican Independence Day. They apparently chose this night to start a new computer system for the servers so screw ups were going to happen. There was El Pastor cooking outside so I was hungry just coming into the restaurant. We were greeted immediately and taken to our seat. After 5 mins we got our chips and salsa. These were good but not great. The chips were cold. We then waited for our waitress for a while. I asked if they were running any specials and she said no and then said everything was 20% off. Our drinks were good but took a while and then began the wait. 45 mins for a taco plate, chicken dish and kids dishes. No that can't be right. She came twice to check on us but did not refill our chips. Did not tell me that they were giving free tacos to each customer until I saw others getting them. I asked about it so I got one. We were a party of five and I am the only one who got one. What about basic manners and courtesy? When the food came I was ready to just pack it and go home. Thank god I stayed. The food is fantastic. It is authentic and is not Tex-Mex just Mex. Our kids loved it too. I think this is the best Mexican in Athens. They need to train their servers a bit better and I can't see why they won't be a success at this new location. read more

We visited this restaurant at 6:00pm on Friday night. First observation was that not many people here. Usually this means not a great place to eat. We were immediately greeted, sat and chips on table. Prices are good, large portions. They have a red and green sauce they bring with chips. Both have spice. The cheese dip also has spice. So beware ordering for small kids. Fajitas were good and enchiladas were good. I can't say that anything was above normal from any other Mexican. It wasn't the best I have had nor was it the worst. I was here the other week while in town. Not a lot of great mexican places up north but I was told this was a wonderful restaurant and boy were they right! I was also told by my gf (and she is usually right) that we had to get the queso dip and it was phenomenal with a great blend of spice to kick it up a notch. I also got the fajitas (steak and chicken) which came out hot and sizzling just like they were supposed to. It was a ton of food for a decent price and it was so good! The steak and chicken were seasoned beautifully along with the peppers and onions which gave a great sweet taste the salty and spicy meat. I decided to splurge and get the fried ice-cream which I do not regret. It was excellent like everything else and our waitress was great very attentive and helpful. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the noise, granted we did accidentally go when the Mariachi band was there so perhaps it is not as bad other times. It was very loud and busy which is sign it's popular! So other than noise which is tolerable for the food it was a wonderful restaurant. I will definitely eat here again! read more

Incredible restaurant. They have quickly replaced several others in Athens as my go-to Mexican restaurant. The food is authentic, affordable, and prepared fresh. It's delicious. They have tons of vegetarian options and will make any dish to your specifications. Their sopes, chalupas and mexican tacos are especially good. So is the queso with spinach added, and their guacamole. The salsa is fantastic and fresh. Everything on the menu is absolutely delicious. The customer service from the waitstaff and other staff is great. Everyone is friendly, lively, happy. They have great service, very attentive and go out of their way to make customers happy. Love the mariachi bands they book twice a month. Just a great restaurant all around. I crave their sope's after a few days. My wife and I have always enjoyed Sr. Sol. It offers easily the most authentic Mexican food in Athens. We moved to San Diego in July of 2012 and, as you might imagine, where overwhelmed with the variety and quality of the Mexican food in the area. After moving back to Athens in September, I was a bit nervous about our first visit since our return. Surely I thought, now that I've experienced so much great food, it won't be the same. I needed have worried. Our meal was, as it always had been, awesome! I had the Camarones Al Chipotle, while my wife ordered the Pollo Monterey. Both were delicious. The chicken was lean, with no gristle. The shrimp was one of the best Mexican dishes I've ever eaten. The creamy chipotle sauce (which by the way I ordered by accident! I meant to get the Diabla sauce) gave the whole meal a fantastic flavor. Nothing I ate in San Diego was any better. We've been back several times since then, and I've made an effort to sample other dishes. I've had fajitas, empanadas, and the Plato Mexicana, which features a little of everything. Everything I've gotten has been great. The service is always very good, and the people are friendly. I also love the festive decor and atmosphere. Highly recommend! read more

We decided to have lunch here on 3/31/15 after looking for suggestion on Yelp and seeing the rave reviews (for the most part) of this restaurant. We were visiting my husband's parents who live in nearby Watkinsville. My husband went to UGA. When my husband was going to UGA, he used to go to a Mexican restaurant and loved their chicken fajita quesadillas. Unfortunately the restaurant closed. Well what he didn't realize until we got there was this W Broad St location of Sr Sol was where his favorite Mexican restaurant was located. In fact, he stated it pretty much looked the same except it had a different name. He had the chicken fajita quesadillas while I had the lunch special with the tamale and chile rellenos. I also had a house margarita which was delicious. The chips accompanying the meal with the salsa was yummy. My husband said the quesadilla tasted exactly as he had when it was the other restaurant. My food was delicious though the tamale was a bit dry. The chile rellenos was excellent! The service was wonderful and everything was served hot! The lunch portions were a good size, and without tip, our meal was barely $20 which included my margarita and my husband's soda! We definitely plan on going back again! read more

Staff was amazing, I didn't eat my entree because it was a too spicy for my liking. I didn't say anything but the waitress saw I hadn't eaten it and ask I said it was just a bit too spicy she apologized and took It off my order I told her it was okay but she went above and beyond. The food is quite good and the service is unbelievable given how busy they are most of the time. My only issue is that due to the number of people they have most nights it's extremely loud which makes conversation challenging. I tried this place in the summer of 2019. We were seated on the east side of the restaurant. There wasn't much in the way of ambience and was actually kind of shabby. Food was OK-nothing special and the service was OK. We stopped in this week and were seated on the west side. There was only one booth occupied out of about 10. We were seated at a booth that had no light so we moved ourselves so we could read the menu. Why would you seat customers at a booth that has no light? This side of the restaurant was even shabbier-rips in the upholstery and holes in the wall. I had the enchilada plate and the enchiladas were less than half the size that they were before. Any Mexican restaurant I have eaten at have the same size enchiladas and really large plates. The plates were also smaller. Do you think that your customers aren't going to notice?
