I was having major torta cravings, however I live in Hartwell. Nuff said. I knew I was going to Athens so I thought I would see what was out there. Sr Sol was only a mile from where I was, so I thought I would give it a try. I moved to Georgia a few years ago from Denver. I ate tortas quite often. So I have high expectations. Walked into Sr Sol and was immediately shown to my table. Looked at the menu and found the tortas section. I used to get carnitas but that wasn't offered so I ordered the pastor. The condiments were slightly different than what I am used to but what the heck. I have to say the torta was delicious. I don't judge food by what I am familiar with. Since getting to college Sr. Sol has been a staple restaurant that me and my friends regularly go to. We always have iffy experiences with the waiters, but have always looked past it because the food is always good. This past week I was eating there and took some leftovers home. I always eat there and today wasn't it I had got dry wing I asked for the spices wings and they gave us the sweetest one and it for delivery the food came cold and the bread was stall I took a bit and tasted something old like if it was the lettuce or sour cream bad decision for eating there don't recommend. Don't do it!!!! 1. The prices on the menu are not what you are charged. When asked for an explanation the "manager" couldn't come up with one. 2. We were thirsty the entire time. 3. Salsa bland at best. 4. Items on the lunch menu- good luck trying to figure that out- are not on the dinner menu but they let you order them and then charge you $3-4 more. Asked why a chimichanga wasn't on the dinner " oh it is..." nope it isn't never could find it. We will NEVER go here again. Not worth it. Aqua Linda was closed that's the only reason we went there. I don't know why the heck my hometown of roughly 100,000 souls has several Mexican restaurants that are better than any in my current metro area of some two million, although I'm sure the relative lack of Latinos in Cincinnati is the main reason. However it's happened, it sure is something to look forward to when I come back home to visit. "Sr. Sol," as this place is now known, is another really good one. As others note, it shares space with a Shell station, whose operators have unnecessarily and annoyingly laid claim to a bunch of parking spaces that the tacqueria could really use. (iBesame el culo, Shell owners!) The interior brings to mind an old-timey greasy spoon, with a long counter with stools, plus a dozen or so booths. Behind the counter is a giant griddle for taco and torta meats. The overall effect is charming enough that, once inside, you quickly forget you pulled up to a gas station and convenience store. As others say, the pastor tacos are delicious. Lengua was tender and tasty, too. Also tried a buche (pork belly) taco, which wasn't as good as it sounded: the pork-belly pieces were cut so small that they seemed to have quickly overcooked and become very dry and flavorless. Shrimp tacos looked fantastic, though. Overall, though, I don't think this stuff was any better than what I've had on a couple of visits to the unsung and excellent Tlaloc. All three salsas that were brought to the table were terrific. Salsa for chips was smoky, deep red, thick, and moderately spicy. You'll also get bottles of verde salsa that is flavorful, cool, and refreshing and another smoky red salsa that is pretty fiery. Our server was friendly and attentive, and the prices are very reasonable. Nice selection of Mexican beers. read more

As always... looking for a good "hole in the wall", I've found this place that it is located inside the premises of a gas station. A lot of people still calls it "El Sol de Zacatecaz" but it looks like now it runs under new management (fraternal twin of the one in Broad Street). Well, now to the most important thing... the food!!!. Really, for me it is the best place in Athens for tacos. They are as close as you can get it from a little car in Mexicali's corner. Small double corn tortillas with your favourite meat (Pastor is the best!!!) and some chopped onions and cilantro. Of course, some drops of lime makes them perfect. If you want to eat something traditional and not the americanize versions from Taco Bell, On the Border, Chipotle, etc... come here and give it a try. I went to the one in Broad Street too, but i like the atmosphere of this one better. Makes you feel like you know a place nobody knows about it. read more

In Athens for a couple of weeks for work. The place is side by side a gas station, and it might look a bit questionable. Almost turned around to continue driving and find some other place to eat . Got back on Yelp and actually started reading the reviews and it convinced me to give it a try .. The Asada Torta with all the fixings with jalapeños and avocado was pretty darn good and a tall glass of Orchata water was also pretty good. . Pleasantly surprised for a place right off the highway on a place I almost decided not to give it a try .. I'm glad I did .. read more

Food is excellent, meats are tender and burritos are flavorful. Only real problem in normal town is getting into and out of the parking lot.

This place has the best food and service I have experienced in a long time, and you cannot beat the pricing. I tip 40% every time I go there because I feel like I'm ripping them off . We were visiting Athens for a few days and always look for local Mexican restaurants with authentic food. Luckily we found this gem. Don't let the outside scare you away. You'll miss out on an excellent meal. The staff were all very friendly and the empanadas were 5 star. We tried them all and the Pastor with cheese was our favorite. Adding the cheese to all of them was a tip from our waitress. I would make the 8 hour drive from home just to eat the empanadas again. read more

I used to love this place, however, after ordering lunch-pollo Monterey to go-I get home to an order with no cheese and the order is luke warm at best. I placed the order and was there right at the 15 min mark that they told me. I called back to ask that they remake my order due to the lack of cheese--which makes the pollo Monterey! They offered to give me 10% off my next order or give me a cheese dip. I declined and explained that by the time I could go to pick it up, my food will be ice cold, as it was never hot in my hands. I stated my disappointment in a nice manner and stated that I would not be seeking any further business with them. I attempted to call back to just outright request my money back since they acknowledged they have a new cook and he has been struggling. COOK ALSO HAS NO MASK, NO ONE IS WEARING A MASK. I didn't know until I went to pick up. I understand he is new and learning, I simply asked them to make it right. They will not pick up the phone and their vm is full. Shotty business practices. I don't often get the opportunity to eat Mexican but when I get a strong craving for it, I cook it myself or I try to find the very best place to get exactly what I want. Sr. Sol is has been that place, or at least in Athens. The prices are affordable. I ordered a combination dinner (2 Mexican tacos, rice & beans), an extra taco and a chimichanga. All of this for barely over $20. The food is delicious & service was fast. I didn't think I could get barbacoa anywhere other than chipotle. It was so good. There are many more things I could say about Sr. Sol but you should check it out for yourself. read more

I've been here twice. It's right next to a gas station, which makes Sr Sol very memorable actually... so good for them! Ordered a chicken burrito with side of rice and beans. I would rate Sr Sol a 3.3 in terms of food quality - it's not bad, food comes with 2 lovely sauces (one green, the other red), and I like how they pan-fry the burritos for extra taste/texture, but the meat quality is not great. I will not eat here again. Food was cold and did not taste good. First i ordered chicken enchiladas - cold, looked like chunked chicken tacos turned upside down with red sauce on them (not baked just rolled and put on plate), cheese wasn't even melted.
