Many of my shoes are cordovan leather, which, of course, last for many years, but they need sole and heel replacement at times. Through a Yelp search, I found Squirrel Hill Shoe Repair and crossed my fingers. SQSR is open Tuesday through Saturday, and there is a public metered lot behind the building. Cash only and a small deposit is due at drop-off. A week and $15 later, I picked up my 'new to me' boots and they looked much better. The scuff is still visible, but they smoothed it out and polished the boots so the blemish isn't as noticeable. I had bought a pair of old leather pumps that were super cute; except that the heel tips were completely gone, maybe worn off completely maybe snapped off. It was hard to tell. I brought them into Squirrel Hill Shoe Repair to see if putting in new heel tips would be possible. The man working said it would be no problem at all... and that it would be only $10 and take two days. I was shocked at how inexpensive and quick they were! I came back two days later with my little ticket stub (make sure you keep it; it's how they locate the shoes) and paid my $10 (cash only - there are several banks within a few blocks if you need cash) and they handed them over. In particular, they have revived multiple pairs of black Chelsea boots for me--each of them at least two or three times before I've had to retire them. I went to this shoe repair shop thinking it would be as nice as everyone before spoke about. However that wasn't my experience, the staff was very cold and short with me upon drop off and pick up. Then the repair was poorly executed and when I showed the lady at the register she dismissed my concerns. She Simply stated that was the best that could be done. She charged me $15 for adding thick black paint to the heel, that was not smooth down and made even. This is not my first time having shoes repaired I go often because I really enjoy my items, so I like to keep them as long as possible. However I'm new to the area via Virginia Beach. I did some research before going to them and they had excellent reviews, so needless to say I was excited. If it weren't for Squirrel Hill Shoe Repair, I'd probably be broke right now. I like to own nice shoes but am a notoriously heavy walker, which means my shoes tend to have a very short life span. Whenever my soles start to wear down (which happens quite often!) I take my shoes in to get them re-soled, and voilà, good as new! Each pair costs $20, which includes a shining. Not bad at all for extending the life of my shoe by a couple months! They also have a quick turnaround. Last time they got my shoes back to me within 2 business days. So speedy! read more

The real miracle was with one pair of black boots that were really beat up - the toe was really scratched up and torn. When I picked them up, they were pretty much good as new! I have tried the place downtown which does a solid job but has a longer turn around, and have heard poor reviews about the place in bloomfeild. Look no further! This store provided great next day service for new heels on a pair of leather booties! Ran ~10 bucks, which is definitely worth it for extending the life of my boots a whole other season! ATM across the street makes cash only no problem, and hold onto your paper with the number they give you when you drop off your shoes. I brought my favorite pair of black ankle boots in for repair - they needed new heels, new soles, and some of the leather on the decorative buttons was coming off....basically I had worn them into the ground and they needed major TLC. I also brought in my Uggs, covered in salt stains that had been sitting on them for months. Fast forward one week later - shoes are stainless (it took 3 shampoos, the guy told me!), but still have sort of a hard texture on the outside (my fault, for not pretreating them). My leather boots have new heels and soles. The leather buttons were the only part not fixed to my total satisfaction - they removed the leather and attempted to paint the (now silver) buttons with black shoe polish so they'd match the rest of the shoe in color, but the paint/polish started chipping off immediately and you can see the silver peeking through on all the buttons. But perhaps that can't be helped - I'll try to paint those on my own and see what happens. $30 for both shoe repairs. The work was high quality, done in a week, and service was perfectly fine and friendly. Cash only. I'm so glad this place is nearby, because I like to buy nice shoes (actually, I HAVE to - my feet are so teeny, the only place I can find shoes that fit is Nordstrom's), and it is totally worth it to pay a few bucks to get them fixed once every year or two! The service was good, quick, and reasonably priced. My concern has to do with whether I am dealing with a business that engages in tax evasion. My total was $35. I gave the guy at the cashier register $40. He gave me my change. I asked him where my receipt was and he handed me the tags he used to accept my items, not the output of the cashier machine (it hadn't ben produced). I showed skepticism and the guy insisted those were my receipts. Probably he thought I wanted some form of warranty on the job. I am open to revise my review if I am wrong, and I hope to be wrong, but this strikes me as tax evasion, which is a crime. The fact that they only accept cash strengthens my suspicions. I would be really surprised if people were to be OK with this business evading taxes. I hope someone (maybe the business itself) can explain why they only accept cash and don't give receipts if the point is not evading taxes. read more

I took my beautiful Italian leather boots to have the soles replaced. They came back with rubber soles crudely glued onto the other sole, which was still visibly cracked. I wear these boots almost every day. After a week or two I developed pain in my right foot. I figured that I'd done something to my foot, but no. I finally realized that the inside of the right shoe had a big crack that my foot was sinking into. My foot still hurts. They ruined another pair of expensive boots, and when I questioned the sloppy appearance, they said it was the best they could do. Terrible. read more

I've been taking my shoes here for years and am uber satisfied with their work. They're great for dress shoes and boots, but holy $hit, their tennis shoe game is on point. I don't know how they do it, but if you take a pair of dirty old tenny's here, they will make them look like brand news. My only gripes with this place are twofold: 1) they don't and probably will never take credit cards so you have to come prepared with cash. 2) their hours are fairly limited. I took 3 pairs of boots (2 Frye, 1 other) here. They just gave me a ticket and I came back a week later, paid in cash, and now my boots are like new! My one pair of Fryes is 4 years old, the other brand new, but the soles on Frye boots are weird, like blocks of wood, and I think it was the best idea to re-sole them. The soles match the boots perfectly and they even cleaned up the old pair of boots after I told them not to. How nice! I came here after reading horrible amazon reviews of DIY stick-on soles. I am a long time customer and was always more than satisfied until Now!!! My brand new boots were not only destroyed, but I had horrible leg and hip pain as a result of what was done to the boots, actually 2 pairs!!! Basically, I asked to have lug soles put on bottom and instead of buying pre made ones, they attempted to make them buy cutting grooves into a solid thick sole on the wheel. The grooves are uneven, not straight and the metal was bent inside the boot and the boots are hopelessly ruined, they won't even stand up straight on a flat surface. Cutting corners for a job like that is unforgivable and I intend to tell everyone I know about what happened!! I still have pain . Shame on you, Mario!!!! read more

I added rubber soles to six pairs of heels. One was a pair of ankle boots that also had a broken zipper. They said zippers are the only thing they don't do, but the zipper was fixed when I got my shoes back. That was great and saved me an extra trip somewhere else. The only tiny issues were that the rubber soles added didn't match the soles of the shoes. They were black on most of the shoes, beige for the nude pair, and red for the shoes with red soles. I'm not sure if that is a reasonable issue. It's the bottom of a shoe. I was just expecting the shoes to all have beige rubber on them to match the beige soles like the one pair had red rubber on them to match the red soles. Other than that, the only bad thing was the price: $150...suppose that is normal for six pairs. I would definitely make the trek to take my shoes here again. Next time I will just request beige soles. read more
