If you have any kind of foot problem, this is *the* place to shop, because everything they carry is designed to be healthy for feet, and supportive. If you're on your feet all day, this is also the place, although I don't know if they carry the steel-toed boots people in some occupations need. But if you work in a hospital, retail, restaurant, or similar, they carry dozens of beautiful and fashionable styles you will love. People who just love really comfortable shoes and sandals will also find a lot to love. What really stands out, though, is the customization they can do. That includes everything from heel lifts to platforms for those with one shorter leg to fully custom molded shoes. I would imagine they could do just about anything else one might need or just want, too, and they can also do just regular shoe repair, although that is clearly not their main niche. They will also make needed adjustments even to shoes or boots you have bought elsewhere, so steel-toed boot wearers, take heed. I had had to quit wearing my beloved Birkenstocks because although I love the support of their footbed, arthritis in my feet was making the amount of depth too painful. Mark (the lovely and really helpful owner) suggested inserting a thin pad between the insole and the cork main body of the sandal. That totally solved the problem and gave me plenty of cushioning while still leaving my feet fully and securely supported as only a Birkenstock can do. Years later, they are still perfect, and my feet have never hurt again in them. The showroom is big, spacious, bright, and sunny thanks to multiple large windows. The store is also fully wheelchair accessible - yay! And great bonus - they have parking behind the store! They are also right on a couple of major bus lines, so they should be reachable from almost anywhere for people who don't drive. It can get really busy, and with the customization they often do and the extra attention that requires, and AFAIK, only one or two people working, there can be a bit of a wait for your turn, so just leave plenty of time for your visit, especially if you know you will need any sort of modification. I went to the store to have orthotics made that duplicated the pair I got from my podiatrist. I was assured that they could duplicate the appliance. I went to pick up the appliance the heal was about 0.25 inches higher I asked why the made them differently I was told they were made that way to even the step of the orthotic. NOT an exact duplicate. They tried to take some material from the heal and it was clear they would not be able to duplicate the original. I ask if it was possible to get a refund of the $300.00 I paid for the appliance I was told no that they would "make adjustments" on them. I said I was not satisfied and left the store. I am sure there are many people who receive good service from the owners of the store. I am not a satisfied customer. A word of advice be very careful doing business here. Oh my! What crooks these people are. In the first place I called to see if they had SAS shoes, and I was told yes. I should've left when I found out that they didn't. I waited weeks for my shoes with the inserts to be available, but finally had to call a few days ago and find out if they were ready or not. He told me "that's why I called you" "I said you did not call me; I called you. " He repeated that a second time and he told me that we needed $250 for the shoes because the insurance wouldn't cover it all so then he called me back and told me that it was only gonna be $45. So my daughter went out to pick them up today and he told her again that it was $250, so I got the shoes but not the inserts. I'm curious to see how they wear. And I would recommend you do not go to these people. I will be calling my insurance company Monday to see what the heck is the story. read more

I feel aggrieved and po'd about the way I was treated and the results of this "excellent" evaluation that did NOT address my supination issues or my very high arch and instep. Without much discussion because apparently what I know about my shoe needs and having run hundreds of miles in other types was not important. I knew nothing according to this man who ignored my attempt at creating understanding. My partner who was with me was appalled by the man who waited on us. However, that being said, I was desperate for a pair of comfortable shoes so we shut up and capitulated to this olderman. He spent about 10 minutes with us, found the shoes he thought I should have and presented them. I looked at the soles that spread out beyond my footprint approximately 1 cm, called a stability platform I believe, and the cant (4.5 cm on the medial side to 3.3 cm on the lateral side ) on the heels and I prayed he knew what he was doing. I should have just gotten up and left. I didn't however and that was my responsibility. Within two weeks of trying to wear them I knew they were impossible. The tongues on both shoes slipped off my instep to the edges. We went back and were quickly waited on by a young man who hurriedly took the shoes to the back and sewed a tack stitch to the medial side of the tongue area where the tongue is now stuck. Of course when I tie the shoes the ties dig into the lateral instep where the tongue does NOT appear as it is tacked to the inside edge of the shoe. The second issue are the soles which stick out a good 6mm on the inside medial edge of each shoe. Furthermore the heel is much higher on the inside edge than the out side edge 4.5 cm to 3.2 cm approxi) and that just exacerbates my already present problem with supination. My partner said maybe the problem we had with these men was that we were not dressed adequately in better clothing. In other words we did not "look" like high end spenders. Interesting, yes? So don't go if you are dressed for the mall; go as if you are going to church or synagogue. And it cost us $160 just the same. I understand I could have gotten a really top rated sneakers (Brooks Ghost 10, Brooks Glycerin 15 or Mizuno Wave Rider 21) for difficult feet for less. These men would like me to post pictures of these pitiful Brooks and I shall as soon as I know how to do it. read more

Do not take your Birkenstock sandals for repairs to this place! First of all, they led me to believe that they are replacing everything but the straps. When I came in to pick them up I noticed that the footbed was not replaced and I asked the person who brought my sandals about it to which he said it would have been extra 30$ and walked away. I was so disappointed that I didn't want to inspect the sandals any further and left the store. At home I started looking at them and got even more frustrated because they did a terrible job. I payed 70$ for my sandals to look worse than before repair! I would have gotten a better repair in a third world country! And considering the previous reviewer's experience with them, it is pointless taking them back and trying to talk with the people working there. And this place has been doing Birkenstock repairs for 40 years?!?!? That was the only reason I agreed thinking that they know what they're doing. Wish I could give zero stars. Do not consider bringing your shoes here for repairs. Seriously, just don't. I brought a pair of cole haan wingtips there to have a scuff smoothed out in the leather and they PAINTED the entire wooden outer sole black. How does that happen? It was cherry brown. The customer service was pretty bad, no one had any idea why it happened, and they were not even apologetic. These are expensive shoes, too expensive for the flippant attitude I received. They offered to "take a look at them" but I would never trust them with my shoes again. Luckily, Joe's shoe repair downtown on 4th avenue could fix them. Seriously, don't bother going here or you will be sad and sorry. Your shoes deserve better. read more

My mom and I just visited Best-Made Shoes in Bloomfield. She has a lot of joint problems and has a very difficult time finding comfortable shoes that also provide adequate stability and she was able to find everything she needed at this store. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and actually helped even out her different leg lengths with an insert to hopefully promote less pain and better stability. They exhibited extreme patience while determining the best shoe and fit for my mom and it was a wonderful experience for both of us. My mom feels great and secure in her new shoes and I have more peace of mind knowing that a true professional fit her with the best shoes for her needs and now Best-Made Shoes is the only place we'll shop for her footwear. read more

The heel covering on my favorite pair of boots came off and the heels wore down quickly. I didn't want to give up these boots but was worried about getting them fixed, as I hadn't done this before. I decided to take them to Best-Made Shoes and am incredibly happy that I did. First of all, the guy who helped me was incredibly nice and understanding. He was flexible in when my boots would be repaired and had them ready right on time. At first I thought that $30 might be a little steep to replace heels, but once I saw them I was incredibly happy. The heels are perfect now! They made sure to blend the colors together so that it looks like one seamless piece- you have to examine the up close to see where the new heel piece was added. They even polished my boots so nicely that they look better than when I first bought them! I highly recommend this place for shoe repairs. read more

Maybe you could find some good shoes to purchase but I would not go here for orthotics. They never were comfortable and the owner was unable to adjust them properly and I was having foot pain and leg pain whenever I wore them. I found him very challenging to communicate with and every time he adjusted them they got worse. I finally took them somewhere else and the technician worked closely with me for a half hour to get them right. read more

With the excruciating pain I was experiencing due to plantar fasciitis, I paid a visit to Best Made Shoes. My wife also suffered from plantar fasciitis pain. The individual who waited on us (please note he was rather smug) recommended a Birkenstock orthotic for both my wife and I. When I asked him the price of the item, he indicated it was $70 per pair (for a total of $140.) Although I thought this was rather pricey, I moved forward with the purchase. The orthotic he recommended seems to be working well for me and I wanted to purchase another pair. I searched the internet and found the identical item on Ebay for $39.20!!! I visited Best Made Shoes for repairs, so I am giving two stars based solely on their repair options. The customer service was friendly and the price was reasonable. However, the purse that I had repaired ended up coming back with a grommet through the lining and they didn't bother to loop the broken strap back through its ring, so it just dangles. I also dropped off two pairs of boots for new heels. One came back ok, but the other had sticky black glue on the leather and the inner heel was cracked (presumably from being in a vise). They may do great orthotics and sales, but their repair is terrible. I guess I'll be paying double to have these fixed somewhere else. Since I paid upfront for the repairs and was just tossed my bag at pick-up I didn't realize how shoddy it was until I got home. To be fair, everyone that I met was very friendly, so their service would be five stars if anything I paid to have fixed was actually repaired. I'm not that fancy, so I didn't expect perfection- just not visible glue and a strap that isn't reattached at all. read more

It was hard for me to initially come to terms with spending $150 on a pair of Birkenstock shoes but the guys at this shop were great in letting me try on different sizes and fits and ultimately ordered a pair in for me. It's now been 4 years, 4 half-sole repairs and 3 total sole repairs and the birks are still going strong. Best made is a unique shop that has a niche that not everyone may find useful, but for those like me who need their services it is a valuable resource to have. This place is a miracle! I simply had no idea that there were stores like this, with such knowledgable staff willing to spend enormous amounts of time problem solving and customizing shoes for complicated, specific foot issues. I have spent countless hours and dollars trying to find the perfect shoes at various shoes stores, online, etc. only to be frustrated and still in pain.
