I started going to Squire Barber shop about 15 years ago when I worked at a company close to the shop.  I no longer work in Mountain View.  I live twelve miles away and there are countless hair salons and barbers between home and Squire Barber Shop. So why do I keep driving to Mountain View for my haircuts? Gary's skill in cutting hair is matched by his friendly demeanor and careful attention to COVID protocols, keeping everyone safe.  He takes appointments via text and accepts payment via Venmo. After getting my first COVID-era haircut last year in late 2020, I took some selfies to show off the haircut including the one in my Yelp profile picture. These photos prompted some rare compliments about my hairstyle, which is about the best endorsement I can give. Note: In 2018 my review griped about the store closing early. I love getting my hair cut here. There's no BS, and it's simple. Gary offers very affordable haircuts and always generates fun conversation. There are usually a couple other folks in the shop at a time, some getting their hair cut and some not. Gary is quick, has attention to detail, and remembers his customers. Important: bring cash. The walls are adorned with all kinds of cool art, pix, and medieval regalia. Gary is a pretty well traveled guy and is local to the area in case you want his take on any travel plans you might have. I dare say he's a Hawaii expert. Squire is next to a beauty salon and is located within a shopping center whose anchor tenant is a Safeway. You can get a lot done at the site if you're not just getting a haircut. I've seen Gary cut all kinds of hair and he doesn't judge when I walk in after not being seen by him for months (looking like a monstrosity on my day off). I also got cut at Squire one time on a lunch break - I had maybe 45 minutes from the time I left the office until when I needed to be back for another meeting. Gary finished his current guest and got me out of the door, with a substantial haircut within 15 minutes. He's a professional. Not sure why you would pay significantly more to get a haircut, elsewhere. read more

I popped in because my usual barber went from $17 for a cut to now $40. Sadly, I don't have much hair, what is left isn't worth $40 a month to cut. Cue Gary. Friendly, fast. Doesn't take appointments but fast enough that he doesn't need to. I have been in twice, never have I waited longer than about 20 minutes. He doesn't do straight blade shaves of your neck but for under $20, that's fine by me. The electric gets close enough. Pretty sure he is cash only, there is an ATM in the grocery around the corner. read more

The first time I came here I had a seamless experience. Garyr and Senior were both in and I waited for Gary, of which I'm glad I did. There really was no wait before I sat in the chair. Halfway through my cut Senior started to mentally fade, asking Gary how to cut hair. Not sure why he doesn't just retire if he is too old to remember his profession. The actual haircut this time wasn't exactly what I wanted, but I liked it down the line anyway. The second time I came here there was no wait either. I sat in the chair with Gary and he gave me another mediocre haircut. This time, another surprise came halfway through my cut. A cockroach. It crawled out near the register's podium and sat on the counter for a few minutes, taunting me. Neither Gary nor senior noticed it, or they just tried the act like it wasn't there. After I paid Gary, I walked out and vowed never to return to this haunted house, filled with Edward scissor-hands barbers and creepy night crawlers (if you haven't noticed I hate bugs). Low and behold I did return here for a quick cut after work before I left the country. It was a friday afternoon around 4 o' clock and the store was closed despite the fact they advertised to remain open. I have not been since then, but I am in need of a haircut soon, so I will probably return this weekend. Hopefully I will leave the shop only with an average haircut and a lighter wallet, without any bugs in my pants. read more

Came in for a last minute haircut. I usually go to F8 ($10), but wanted to try something new. Unfortunately, I wasn't impressed. Sure, this ($15) place has the feel of an old school barber and everyone knows one another. But my focus is on the service and finished product first, and becoming buddies second. First off, the (older) guy who cut my hair was quite shaky, I had trouble understanding him and I was worried he would "slip up," so I just kept my mouth shut during the service. The floor was covered in the previous guys hair, the shears and scissors appeared old to me and it didn't appear they cleaned thoroughly between clients. My barber, after a minute or so into my cut, stops, turns his back to me, proceeds to count money on his work counter, and then go up to the register to muddle around. He could have done that after my cut. It's not like he had to answer the phone or anything. Very weird. The overall cut was meh (see pic) , but he didn't clean up my ears, or even attempt to brush or blow the tiny pieces of hair off my head and unevenly cut neck. Several words come to mine for my experience: Scary, sloppy and just plain weird. Given this place has a 4 star rating, the only thing I can think of is that I visited on the wrong day. read more

Good Price ($12 for a haircut is a steal) .. However, there are some things to watch: 1. Senior hardly works anymore so Junior has to take all the workload. It can take a while before it's you turn. They keep a good collection of magazines (Esquire, GQ, Rolling Stones, People etc) though to keep the wait worthwhile (and as someone has pointed out there is coffee/bagels/safeway nearby, though you can lose your turn if you step out). Bottom line: it can take time. 2. They have started closing the shop during otherwise Open hours. I have visited a few times and found the shop closed (without any notice). 3. They like to do your hair their way pretty much. If you get into the details and insist on having some fine-details attended to they can act a little odd/rude (perhaps they don't want to spend too much time for $12). 4. So, I find a barber shop open on Sundays and get a good cut. Fast forward a month and I go on a Sunday again. This time it is closed. The sign says that the shop closes at 2:30 -- problem is, it is 2pm. OK -- these things happen. Flash forward to another Sunday. I call them at 12:30 and the guy says, get here by 1 and I can do it (they are closing at 1:30). I mention all I need is a beard trim and it won't take a long. The guy says, no -- he won't do it. I guess it isn't enough money for him. Here is a hint: want to keep customers? Then be nice to them and show some loyalty. Hell, I am just trying to give you some money (and I do tip). The person who usually cuts my hair changed careers, so I was in the position of finding a new barber. Since this barber shop is close to my apartment, I thought I'd check it out and I'm glad I did. First, the quality of the haircut is excellent. For $12 + tip, I received one of the best cuts I've had in a long time. I brought a picture of the cut I wanted (on my iPhone), and the barber did an excellent job of cutting the style to match. Second, the atmosphere: simple, comfortable and great conversation. This is a barber shop, not a salon. It doesn't try to be anything more, which is perfect for me. Plus, the barber (I spoke with Jr) is a really cool guy to talk to. Overall: If you're a guy that needs a good haircut, this is the place. If there's a wait it's worth it. I will go here for my haircuts going forward. read more

Thank God for no fuss, old fashioned barbershops like Squire Barber Shop. I've been going here for about 3 years now and have never been displeased. Father and Son both do a great job, their prices are low, they're super friendly, and they have a great deal of respect for their patrons. I see a few reviews bagging on them for maintaining consistent hours of operation. I agree, they tend to leave if there's no business and it's close to quittin' time. I've accommodated for that by not heading to the shop just before closing time. (wink) read more

I have to say, I was insanely skeptical when I first came in. It was around 10:30am on a Wednesday and right off the bat I was about 45 years younger than any of the people waiting to get their haircut. Also, there were two people in front of me and only one guy cutting hair (not the shops fault, I know, I'm just impatient). Anyhow, the guy who cut my hair (son of the owner) did a great job. He really took his time and got everything nice from the sides to the back and even the fade at the top (so it doesn't turn into a bowl cut when it grows out [this really happens, just go to any Supercuts]). Overall, a little dated in the decor and some of the clients but a great value ($12 men's, $10 seniors). Also, it seems the owner is out of commission at the moment so it's just the son running the place 7 days a week by himself, so the open hours may flux a bit depending on the day. Try to be patient, I guess. P.S. BONUS: They have Star Wars Action figures in the shop. How can you not support that? That's right, you can't not support that! read more

For $12.00 + tip you can't beat Squire for a quick quality haircut anywhere. Been going to Squire for about 4 years now after some disappointing haircuts at my 'stylist' in Menlo Park at 3 times the cost. This is a true neighborhood barbershop. I like the idea of being able to drop in anytime without an appointment. There may be someone ahead of me but Gary gets you in the chair quickly and you come out with a great haircut. Any small wait is worth it. Great conversation and plenty of material to read if you're waiting. Wouldn't think of going anywhere else !!! read more

I would like to say that this place is really worth the money($12+tip) I have always had great conversations with the owner(son) during the haircut.. He is such a wonderful guy.. He really gives an awesome haircut.. I am been fed up of going to shops where they treat your hair like grass and use their instruments like lawn movers and finish the hair cut in 2-3 mins and don't care how you look.. This is an update to my previous review. I've actually had two haircuts here since then. I find this place somewhat difficult to rate. In my heart I want to give it 5 stars like most others. If you are okay with a patient wait in the barber shop looking for an old-school feel and a good inexpensive cut this is definitely the place for you. Just make sure you call beforehand because my original complaint is still valid. So why three stars now? Well, they weren't opened the first day I tried to go and it seems that they modify their hours so they may not always be open during advertised hours. Last time I got a haircut he was closing at 3 instead of 5 because it was just the son all day (it is a dad and son operation) and he hadn't eaten all day. Understandable, but would be frustrating if you planned on showing up after 3 p.m. that day. I'm a punctual person and expect a business to be opened during advertised hours. Also, I felt a little rushed as far as the haircut goes once there were a few people waiting. He was more methodical when it was less crowded. Definitely a cool, inexpensive, family run place. It's effectively a one-man show though with variable hours so call ahead and be patient! Very friendly guy too..... read more

I have been coming to Gary for my haircuts for the past year and I think it's time that I leave my review. Quality and price wise, it cant get any better. The line might be long during Saturdays, but you can tell he puts his full attention to everyone. You might have to wait up to an hour if your come at the wrong time, but he will entertain the room with his mundane funny stories. As for the quality of his cuts, he gets it right. The fades are on point, and if you need hairstyling advice, he will chime in. read more

I walked in early on a Saturday morning. I was first in the chair with Senior. Got the cut done quickly enough, which was nice because there was a fly which kept landing on my face during the cut. What a gem of a place. Until today, I used to frequent Great Clips, which offers a decent haircut. I decided I wanted to walk, rather than drive and after seeing good reviews of this place, decided to give it a try. I had a very pleasant conversation and Jr. did a phenomenal job. I'm told this place has been around for 41 years! I learnt a thing or two about Mountain Views recent history during our conversation. And - the haircuts are just 12$ a piece - what a steal.. I like how Jr cut my hair. I was looking for a barber since mine retired after cutting my hair for over 20 yrs...Gary's shop was a great YELP find. Old fashioned barbershop with a barber that knows how to used the clipper and scissors. Be patient or come in with time since the son (Jr) is working over time (7 days a week for the last few months to cover for his dad while he recovers. My dad was looking for a 'real' barber shop' Squire fit the bill. He had his haircut by Gary (Junior). Despite the fact that dad does not have a lot to work with (at 93) Gary took his time and did a great job. They have reasonable prices and friendly, professional service. Huge improvement over previous barber that literally spent 10 minutes and charged much more. Nothing beats a local owner operated small business. BTW.....they do not take appointments and there is usually one barber working, so do not go when you are in a hurry, there is a nice coffee/bagel shop around the corner so get a coffee, settle in and enjoy the conversation while you wait. read more
