They had lovely old pictures hung tastefully on the walls and the music was mellow and made the meal a bit more pleasant. I would say without wine and desert it isn't too pricey for a one-off nice meal for a poor uni student(about 10 quid each), but if you want to go all out(and for me when I have Italian food I like to have it all) and have a meal, wine, and dessert it will be about 25 quid per person, but I'd say ever so worth the money. I am normally a very generous tipper(as I am from the States and we tip hugely on everything), but this was one of the few times I barely left a tip because the service was awful. The thing I hate about tipping terribly is that she probably treated us awfully because we were students and figured we wouldn't tip well anyway. Her terrible attitude put a damper on one of our few nights out. The food was mediocre, but not awful. I think I may have just been spoiled back home with incredible Italian food. Two mixed and one vegetarian lots of variety and more than enough to go round the 7 guests already there. With everyone in situ we ordered mains which were AMAZING!!!! Only negative I would have is that there was too much to eat. Me and a friend had scallops, the others had seabass, duck, seafood risotto and seafood pasta and pizza dishes. We bought wine at the bar with the very palatable house white being less then £12 which is extremely reasonable and when the food bill came it was very very reasonable and no service charge added unlike some restaurants where you are obliged and we did leave a very good tip. My friend's lasagne was scaldingly hot to start but duly wolfed down, so I'm assuming it tasted good. My gluten-free choc cake and ice cream had an unexpected amaretto flavour, and it was a tad dry. I still enjoyed it, and it was wonderfully gooey for the final few mouthfuls. Friendly, attentive staff coupled with exceptionally reasonable prices (especially with a Taste Card) gives Al Forno a solid four. Recommended.
