The weekend before Thanksgiving, we reserved a "back-in" spot with Angels & Cowboys. Tiffany emailed the directions, describing exactly where their gate was located. In addition, they provided amenities, rules, and recommendations for arriving before dark. We received timely follow-up emails including a reminder to arrive before dark. On the day of the trip, they texted us asking that we let them know when we plan to arrive. We were pulling a 40ft RV from Houston with an ETA of around 3:00pm. As we traveled through San Antonio and headed toward our destination, our RV lost a wheel and the wheel studs were all sheared off! It was 3:00pm on a Friday! I called Angels & Cowboys and told James our dilemma and that we did not know when we would arrive. James was awesome and said to call when we were on our way. After repairs, we were back on the road around 5pm with new ETA of 6pm. I called James and let him know. He said it would be dark when we arrived and suggested we park in a pull-through spot. He picked one right next to a wooden deck with a ramp to a wooded area. When we arrived, it was very dark and we were extremely thankful for the "easy-in" spot James reserved for us. The excellent communicating, understanding, and accommodating from Angels & Cowboys helped us through a stressful crisis we won't forget! The first time Thing One came to this camp, he lasted less than two days here. This wasn't because…read morehe was homesick nor because he hadn't been to any camp before. This was because this camp and staff (in my experience) deal poorly with those with mental health issues. Thing One has Asperger's Syndrome and has difficulty making new friends, and has social issues in environments where bullying is prevalent. During Thing One's only stay at this camp, he was bullied by other campers and became distant and disenchanted with the staff here. The director of this camp called me and asked me to retrieve Thing One via a voicemail. My frustration with Thing One's experience here stems from the manner in which the situation was handled. My son was asked to leave, but the children who bullied him were allowed to stay for the remainder of the camp session. Thing Two has come here for the past two summers and has had a mediocre experience here at best. While she is pleased with her counselors she has gotten, she is less pleased with the vernacular and behavior of the children who attend the camp (e.g., lots of cursing and not following the word of Christ). While the camp staff can't control what occurs in one's home outside of the camp, they can certainly control how the children behave when at camp. Each review of this establishment will be unique to those who attend this camp/retreat. Overall, my children's experiences have been less than stellar here. If anyone intends to send their child here, it is advisable that they carefully review the policies of the camp. Further, if the child being sent here suffers from anxiety or other mental health issues, this may not be the best place to send this type of camper because of the staff's inability to work with youth who fit into this category. Other camp attributes No technology is allowed during the camp session. There is no cell service here as the camp is remote. Campers must bring their own Bible for devotional. Digital camper mail may be purchased for a camper at an additional cost (aside from camp fees). As the camp is remote and the terrain is rough, it is advisable to use a truck or SUV to transport campers to the camp site.

The cabin had everything we needed including river access (Nol has given public access to the river as part of a lease agreement with TPWD). I didn't get to meet her but Mark says she's the best. We had deer, skunks, bunnies, opossum, fox and horses. The bird watching was great. Who else says, "give me a hug" but someone as great as Nol! I can't wait until next year.

Nol has 2 cabins for rent that are a stone's throw from the river (30-second walk). They are attractive, clean, well-furnished and they are both newly built. As someone who likes to kayak Central Texas' rivers I've had the opportunity to stay at numerous different riverfront cabins and I have to admit that Nol's are the best by a long shot. Sadly, I can be overly critical at times but these accommodations were excellent. The bed (queen-size) was plush and comfortable, the AC was frosty cold and her riverbank is private, quiet and beautiful. She even has one of the best swimming holes that I've experienced on the South Llano. The 100-year old pecan trees that line her stretch of the river provided us a comfortable respite from the hot July sun. If you like to fish and run the rapids like I do Nol's property sits on an ideal location on the river to float into or float out of when making kayak trips. Pro Tip #1: When you make your morning cup of coffee go sit down on river's edge upon her rock steps. It's quiet, relaxing and you'll have the whole river to yourself. Pro Tip #2: After your dinner meal go sit out on the porch and watch the wild turkeys, white-tailed deer and axis deer come out to feed. We saw more wild game and birds than you'd see at the zoo.

Short and Sweet- Tim Fallon and the instructors there are the REAL DEAL. You'll be blasted with a TON of sayings, advice, and cliches all geared towards "A-Way". You'll remember them all, fondly. It is place that is harder to leave, and then harder to stay away from. Most likely.... You'll be a repeat in the future, and you'll stay in touch with new friends made there. Phone, social media, a future hunt, or another class together. You'll learn more about precision shooting and knock steel farther than you thought you could (on day 1)... and it gets better from there. From the basics to the advanced, and you'll be hungry for more-more-more. And then the good part starts. Unreservedly and with pleasure, I write the strongest review that I can- this is NOT an experience to be missed (and improved if you bring your kid of S.O. to join you!)

We spent last weekend here in a 4-bedroom cabin (3 kids, 6 adults) and loved the time we had…read moredespite the crazy drop in temperature... It made for an excellent chance to utilize the indoor fireplace at our cabin as we played board games throughout most of the evening. Our cabin wasn't much to look at on the outside, but gorgeously decorated and maintained on the inside. While it was secluded by trees from the many other cabins on the ranch, some others looked too close for comfort or privacy (but that's just my observation). Its October and probably the start of their off-season, yet they had a live music series we enjoyed Saturday night on the property. The music was at an outdoor cantina bar near the front of the ranch, which also had a large basketball court and miscellaneous balls for the kids to keep occupied with. At the bar, they offered a small selection of food which primarily consisted of Chili and Sausage wraps. The river across the street was easily accessible. If it were warmer, we would have spent our whole weekend in the scenic waters of the Guadalupe. Kayaks, tubes and rope swings were available to all guests on the ranch. I will mention (PARENTS TAKE NOTE) that the one fickle child who didn't want to do anything outside or with the family, was sorely disappointed in the Rec room offerings. With family coming in from all over, RTR was a great place to gather and relax. We brought lots of snacks and food to make for the weekend. It was nice that the kitchen was fully stocked with cooking utensils and dishware. Making breakfast each morning was a pleasant and fun delight. The most enjoyable and scenic part of the weekend was the herd of deer (saw at least 7-10) in the backyard. It was early in the morning while we enjoyed some fresh coffee. The kids even got to see one just a couple feet from the back door later that same morning. Roddy Tree Ranch offered us plenty of amenities and activities to take pleasure in, but the fact of the matter is the family made its own fun by simply being together in nature.
