Shane from Mr Spruce Tree Service in Ankeny, stopped by my house after one of my trees dropped many branches after a storm. He asked if I wanted his company to remove the branches from the street and take them away. The branches had fallen from one of the two very established ash trees that had been showing signs of EAB infestation despite preventative treatment. I hired Shane and his company to take the fallen branches and both of the ash trees.. At the same time, Mr Spruce took a tree down for my neighbor and did dirt work for her. Mr. Spruce is a family business on steroids. I expected a few workers, but I think that the entire extended family was there that day. They removed and ground the roots of my ash trees while also working at my neighbors.. The entire crew was professional, efficient, and friendly. They cleaned both my and my neighbor's yards completely of any debris before they left. I have had tree work done many, many times over the years, and this was the most completely satisfying of all those experiences. I hired Spruce Hill to take out my ash tree when I saw them taking out my neighbor's tree. Their crew headed by Corey Treb was dishonest with me. Did you know "Remove large Ash tree in back yard" (stated in contract) does NOT mean take out large Ash tree in back yard? No, no! I need to pay another $1000 for them to haul the wood away, or to actually remove the tree. The fence between our neighboring lots was severely damaged. They said it would be fixed. I have in writing "Will have fix fence A.S.A.P." By this they meant last weekend. Fence is not fixed, probably won't be by them. I have little faith in Spruce Hill Tree Service. I had an EXCELLENT experience with this company. A young man knocked on my door, said they were working in the neighborhood, saw my huge dead ash and asked if I'd like a quote to remove it. I did - he gave me a very fair price and I gave him the go-ahead. They came with the proper equipment to cut, chip and carry it all away. It took about an 1.5 hours and when they left - you never knew they were there except for a missing tree and a neatly raked and very small pile of chips to cover the indent where the stump had been. They were polite and pleasant and I have absolutely no qualms about recommending them. In fact, my neighbor saw them and they are now doing his tree. Good news travels fast. This company gave me great results worth every penny. read more

On March 26, 2019 a young man approached me about trimming/removing a couple of trees in my front yard. He said that the trees were diseased or rotten and posed a threat to my home. He gave an estimate for the ash tree which he claimed had an infestation of ash beetles. I agreed to have it removed. We also took a look at a moderately sized silver maple to be trimmed/removed and he claimed it was rotten and would likely fall on my house. The owner showed up and gave me a quote of $3000 to remove the maple. I told him that that was excessive and after some negotiation we agreed upon a price of $2500. As they removed the maple they didn't trim the large branches adequately and resulted in dropping them across the street and striking/damaging the neighbor's large oak tree snapping a few branches and blocking the entire street. I filmed the entire removal process.During the removal process it was evident that there were no rotten parts of the tree. After I paid them I inspected the property and there were several large holes in my yard as well as my neighbor's. The large branch they dropped across the street had struck my sidewalk causing it to shatter and collapse, although it was not evident without looking closely. They left my yard a mess with debris scattered everywhere. The stumps were ground but they left a pile of wood chips where the ash tree was removed and a deep depression where the maple was removed was filled with wood chips to leaving the appearance that it was all level. I have had to fill 5 lawn bags with chips and I am still working on it. I will have to bring in a significant amount of dirt to repair the damage. I have tried to contact them on several occasions but they won't return my calls. I won't use this outfit again and would not recommend them to anyone else. Terrible customer service! read more

Ben (I believe is the owner), was very sharp & unfriendly on the phone. I'd told him that we had a tree needing to be removed & that we'd like an estimate. He then said he'd be over in 1/2-1 hour, and 3 days later have not seen or heard from him. I also left two voicemails with him in July 2015, for an estimate to remove the same tree...never returned my phone calls. Very disappointing as we used them in 2009 to remove a large tree in our backyard and they did a great job!! I've in fact passed their name along to others in the past. We wanted to give them the job, but obviously they are NOT interested. Very poor customer service Ben!! read more

The crew does a great job but can never reach the owner. Their prices are way too high and not competitive at all on pricing. Checks were made out to owner not business name and no sales tax was charged. No itemized list of work that was done. The crew did a great job but pricing is too high and owner doesn't return phone calls. If their pricing was better would use them again or recommend them to friends but I was gouged so bad in pricing that I will never use them or recommend them to anyone I know. read more

They're from Iowa, but travel through Northern Minnesota in the summer doing tree service with a crew of 5-10 guys. I've used them twice, but not again. Both times they've quoted a very high price for cutting down and removing dead trees...then, after negotiations, cut their price by as much as 40%. They try to gouge you good. Both times they've done good work, but both times they've left litter in my yard, not done some of the work they promised to do, and never returned my phone calls when I attempted to have them return. This year, they left 2 very dead trees standing beside the driveway. When I pointed them out, they promised to return the next day to remove them. They never returned and haven't responded to 2 phone calls. The first year, we even made lunch for them, and they responded by leaving paper plates and water bottles "hidden" in the woods. They're good if you stand there and supervise them constantly and never write out a check until the job is completely done and you've inspected everything very carefully. However, check pricing locally because you can probably find a local company that will match or beat their price. By the way, in 2 visits, their crew has plugged up 3 of our toilets! read more
