We were excited to see Patron come to Jasper. Good Mexican food is sorely lacking in East Texas…read more Unfortunately, it still is. We first gave this place a try a few weeks ago, when they were newly open. My bride got beef fajitas, which appeared to be nothing more than unseasoned sirloin steak sliced thin. The meat was tough and flavorless. My carne guisada was edible; that's all I'll say about it. Since they were new (although they have other locations in East Texas), we decided to withhold judgment until we gave them another shot. Today, my bride got the mushroom chicken and I got the enchilada dinner with a taco and a cheese "puff." One thing both dishes had in common: bland, bland, bland. (I have to add: so is the salsa, and it's thin enough to drink through a straw.) and my cheese "puff" was just a small tortilla bowl full of queso. We go to Houston a LOT, so we know good Mexican food when we find it. Patron ain't it. They'll do well in Jasper because there's pitifully little competition. But they wouldn't last a weekend in a location with decent Mexican food nearby.

Cedar Tree Restaurant in Jasper offers exactly what you'd expect: a traditional Southern buffet…read morewith plenty of familiar comfort food and generous portions. The front-of-house staff were friendly and welcoming. We were seated in the back wing during a busy lunch crowd, which didn't bother us at all. The issue was that after our drinks arrived, our server seemed to disappear. As the crowd thinned, we found ourselves waiting for refills and attention. The buffet has all the classics--beef tips, chicken pot pie, fried catfish, chicken-fried pork loin, baked chicken, vegetables, and plenty of sides. It's filling and abundant, but it's a true country buffet experience: hearty, salty, and rich rather than refined. Cedar Tree clearly has a loyal following, and the full dining room shows that many folks enjoy what they offer. A little more consistency in service would make the experience even better.

The food is always fresh, with large portions, and the service is great. I would recommend the carne asada street tacos, quesadillas (also carne asada) the chicken taquitos (which don't look anything like the taquitos I'm use to), the Nachos are good, and my brother always gets the steak fajitas which are huge and come with rice & beans on the side. We've tried a few other things on the menu which were also good. Always friendly, and responsive service. The atmosphere is nice, better than the old location.

Everything was very good but they need to work on the hash browns a little though (need to crisp them up). Had their burgers and sandwiches in the old location down the street, all were good. I'm hoping they'll get the tater tots back if they haven't already. The service was great, the prices were decent for the breakfast we had. They painted and fixed the place up inside since the old owners (El Flamingo) moved down the street. It looks a lot better inside. Parking lot could use some work (fill in big holes) but I suppose in due time.
