A better restaurant anywhere would be tough to find. An absolute gem for Lake Martin AND Alabama!! We have been here numerous times for both dinner and brunch. Never have we been disappointed. Very cool decor and ambiance. Excellent and attentive service. Food that rivals anywhere else I have eaten in the world. If you are trying to decide whether or not to give SpringHouse a shot or not, make the reservation and go. Best fine dining option around. Housed in a beautiful facility where you can see grazing horses outside in the daytime and try and catch the sunset from the veranda in the evening. Springhouse is overrated and way overpriced for Alabama. It's even more expensive than high end restaurants in Manhattan, New York, where rent and labor cost are really high. Nevertheless, I would not have cared about the exorbitant prices if the dinner was worth it. The steak was gristly and horrible, the pasta bolognese was bland and did not have enough shredded cheese and most of all, the pan seared fish was supposed to come with root vegetables and BRUSSEL SPROUTS! Guess what - I got 3 leaves of brussel sprouts that didn't even make one sprout! I sent them an email which they blatantly ignored. And all of this at New York prices or even more! SpringHouse = Perfection. Chefs, bartenders, and servers are top notch. Idyllic setting. And the food- oh the food. I dream about going back year long. I even follow them on instagram just to see what they are cooking! Seriously the best food I have had. These guys deserve a James Beard Award if they haven't received one already. My husband and I went here for New Year's dinner and for our anniversary. It's pricey, but so worth it. I would rather go here once or twice a year than go out several times a year to mediocre restaurants. Next time I am back in town, I will come definitely visit! read more

wow! another awesome Auburn / Opelika / Lake Martin fine dining establishment. this dinner was definitely one for the books. true - this restaurant was created and launched in the hands of Chris Hastings, one of my favorite (all time) chefs in the southeast (actually --- anywhere!!), so you know it's gonna be top notch. but Chef Rob McDaniel is the one behind the sustainable, fresh (and I mean, FRESH - most everything comes from the farms that the restaurant sits on) creativity that hits your table! when we eat with our auburn friends, we tend to "make an evening of it", and this dinner was no different (see my review for ACRE: http://bit.ly/1QxP71u). we had the perfect reservation time (7:30), got to see a gorgeous sunset and sit down to an amazing dinner. Sam greeted us when he saw the Hubs looking over the wine list and he and i hit it off right away! he's quite the knowledgeable sommelier and was impressed by our many choices for the evening! i can't wait for his fall wine dinners! we started with the sliced heirloom tomatoes - simple, but served with maldon salt and cracked pepper which made it outta this world. so fresh! so delish. we also indulged in the calamari and shrimp starter and a number of others, including the cheese plate (which I usually save for dessert, however I was forewarned about the dessert and knew i wanted something sweet. for dinner, i had the scamp over the jalapeno creamed corn and thought i had died and gone to heaven! it's a beautiful dish and the fish was like butter. we also had the tanglewood chicken at the table as well as a vegetable plate. its not often i would go to a fine dining establishment and eat a veggie plate but this one was SUPURB! you cant go wrong with any of Chef Rob's dishes and Sam can help you pick out a wine that's perfect for your meal and your tastes, but make sure you leave room for dessert. Beautiful setting. Delicious food and great service. It was impressive to see the chef inspect EVERY plate before it was sent to a table. The food is delicious... But the service is crap. They charged for three items they never brought right now and pick up coffee for dessert... We ordered one meal to go because someone wasn't feeling well we place the order at the beginning when we ordered all the other meals and waited 30 minutes for it to show up after dessert. The server lied and said that the desert came out fast... Sad service all the way around from the kitchen and the waitstaff, but if you have the patience but the food is delicious. read more

Brunch at Spring House is easily one of my favorite things about visiting Lake Martin. Their burger topped with pimento cheese is one of my all time favorite meals. We were very excited about coming here for brunch last Sunday, and unfortunately we left feeling very disappointed. The service was ridiculously slow, the server got our order wrong, and the dishes were average at best and plain. Then, to top it off, there was a huge roach climbing up the stone wall next to our table in the outdoor patio area. Though the decor and view were lovely, that was the only positive thing worth mentioning. What a shame- they need to make some serious changes here. read more

Outstanding flavors and seasoning with Rutabaga Soup and Grilled Trigger Fish

My local girlfriend took me there for a wine tasting dinner this winter. If you ever wondered just how little you could get in terms of quality and portion for the price tag, you should experience this. Plenty of sizzle, not so much steak if you know what I mean. The funniest part of the night was that the one decent wine served by the north-west based sponsors (in attendance), was unavailable for post dinner case lot purchase...hmmm. Anyway, chef must have run about a 10% food cost that night, which is in range of the costs maintained by places most of the dinner attendees usually eat at in this neck of the woods so to speak-unless they kill it themselves... read more

Went here this summer for a dinner while visiting family in Alabama. I have to say this is a must stop if you are in the Lake Martin area. The ambiance is the typical "new American" feel. Very extensive bar and very extensive wine menu. My group started with a cheese plate. This was really the only large miss on the night, for it did not come with crackers or bread. I had the fish special of the night while the remaining group had the shrimp and grits and one vegetarian option. Honestly, the vegetarian option was one of the best I have seen. It was just a plethora of different cooked vegetables in different styles. It was a ginormous portion of them too. My fish dish was good, but I would not have said it was the best ever. The shrimp and grits on the other hand, when the 3 women you are eating with became "too full" sometimes you just have to help them out, was outstanding. I would suggest getting it if it is on the menu when you are there. Finally at dessert, we with with the homemade Smores. Get it if you are there. read more

This place is a real treat and a bit of fine dining surprise on lake martin. We enjoyed a great meal Saturday night and were impressed by the restaurant's open vaulted architecture. 2 at the table had a beef short rib that was prepared as slow smoked meat ( vs. the slow cooked stew style you see most often) - it was great! I had a flounder that was light but had a wonderful flavor. Our waitress Sarah was very helpful and attentive. We met Sam the manager who is from my brother's home town and he helped with some wine selections. He is studying for an advanced sommelier designation and seems to have a great passion for the culinary arts. I think his wine list was great - we all had different choices by the glass and they were unique, reasonable and above all delicious . read more

My wife and I have been to Springhouse a couple years ago. We decided on a whim to make the drive down to Alexander City and Lake Martin from Birmingham for Sunday brunch this time, and we were definitely not disappointed. This is one of the best restaurants I have eaten in, and since I travel for a living, I do eat in nice places quite often and there is lots to compare to. But not so with Springhouse. When we arrived, we were enthusiastically and tastefully greeted, seated in the outside veranda next to the fireplace with a wonderful view down past the meadow towards the horse corals. The amazing in house baked sour dough bread arrived promptly, as did our drinks. After a Bibb lettuce salad with a wonderful blue cheese vinagrette dressing, my wife had the burger and I chose eggs Benedict, served over pork loin and a lightly toasted English muffin topped with hollandaise. Both dishes were absolutely perfect, just enough to make us full, but we didn't drive down from Birmingham to stop here without desert. We had a lot of trouble choosing, since all the deserts were so interesting. I chose white cheddar cheesecake, and we were treated by the manager to not only the cheesecake but the pineapple upside down cake with Grapico ice cream. Yes, Grapico. The old grape soda combined with sweetened condensed milk and churned into creamy perfection. Both were so very delicious and different twists on southern favorites. I cannot recommend the Springhouse highly enough...a must eat restaurant for anyone here in the south! Delectable southern food with a flare like no where else!
