I started training jui jitsu a while back from the recommendation of a friend and wow, what can I…read moresay? I have never looked back. I was really nervous at first because of the thought of grappling with other people but my friend recommended the Maven Jiu Jitsu Academy because of the Professor James Quan and I am glad he did. Professor James comes from a teaching background that translates extremely well into his teaching style and the atmosphere that he creates at this academy which is really incomparable to anything other academy that I have ever experienced. Over the years, I have had the honor to train at several other academies around the country while traveling, including some of the most popular and well respected academies as well as many of the surrounding academies in the greater Houston area and one thing that I can say without a doubt is that this place is special. They are super friendly and welcoming of new students with no experience and that is what really made me stick to this environment for such as long time. It takes away all the anxiety that you get from starting a combat practice like this and really makes you feel at home. I have been so glad to witness my transformation through training not just in a self defense aspect but also physically, mentally and through the many friendships that I have gained. They also have a great kids program that I enrolled both of my kids in and they absolutely love it. So if you are thinking of getting into jiu jitsu or looking to join a martial art that is gentle yet effective, then look no further than Maven Jiu Jitsu Academy. They offer a flexible schedule, competitive pricing, a great beginner and family friendly atmosphere and best of all, a place that will eventually feel like a second home.

Excellent Jiu-Jitsu school with good culture. Highly recommend this, if you're interested in…read moreJiu-Jitsu and live in the North Houston area.

Crooks. Not nice people. Christopher has no idea what he is doing in terms of being a "financial manager" bullying and writing do not offer settlement in an email means nothing and he obviously did that to scare a young woman like myself. Thankfully, I have received financial advice from a professional who told me yes it will go on my Credit but I will be able to settle. Do not do business with this gym if you live a life where opportunity take you to different places because they will penalize you for it. Even if I give you proof of location I still have to 400$ for a location I do not use. That's ridiculous! Still thievery. THERE ARE MORE NEGATIVE REVIEWS THAN POSITIVE PEOPLE! Do not deal with this place. They just want your money, they are rude when they don't get their way, and just unprofessional. Not a place I'd say I am proud to be a member of. And writing a bad review wasn't a threat. I was telling you that so everyone can know the bad experience I had with you. Thanks Chris for the no brainer.

This place was not cheap and I signed my son up for the kids…read moreclass. He loved his teacher Zion. However, the 1 star review is because this location in Spring closed suddenly and moved to Magnolia!! They MUST be hurting for business because notice was NOT GIVEN in time for members to do anything about it. I went on vacation one week and came back to take son to class to find an almost building, locked up, and NO SIGN to indicate there was a closure. There were 5 clients outside wondering what had happened as well. Finally, an email was found which was apparently sent less than 5 days prior (over a weekend, so more like 3 business days) notifying of the move. Nothing verbal, no posting in the club at all even after move was made. We had to hunt for the email. Any parent understands the challenges of a balancing busy work schedule with their child's activities. Can you believe even though our contract was up AND the school had closed SO SUDDENLY and MOVED 30 minutes away, that they will not cancel my son's membership because they said 30 days notice is required even though It was THEM who moved without giving earlier notice for a chance to cancel. (seems purposefully deceitful). And When I told them it was too far and I didn't sign up for a class in Magnolia, contract says NORTH Houston location, NOT MAGNOLIA, NOT WOODLANDS... the response is that it's within 15 miles of the other location so my argument was moot. There is NOTHING in the contract to stipulate this either. Rod must be pulling at straws or looking at the wrong contract. Deceitful.... they must be dying financially because this is ridiculous. Where in the contract does it have a 15 miles stipulation.. and if THEY MOVE? If I MOVED I get it,.. but it wasn't me. That's worse than good old Bally's tried to pull in the past, and look where they are. Bankrupt.

My daughter was doing really well and was enjoying it the director was evening complimenting her. But the same week these siblings were signed up so the director was getting paid twice as much than what I was paying. From my experience the director didn't want to lose them he was trying everything to keep those two kids there to sign up. The first week keep in mind the boy and girl was doing the same as my daughter but the girl wasn't doing as good as mine with the jump kicks. We all come another day that same week and the girl and boy they get awarded my daughter didn't get anything the whole time we was there those kids kept getting awarded and my daughter he stopped saying good job doing nicely it was all on those two so he can keep the money rolling in. I took my child out. Even she kept wondering why they were being rewarded and she wasn't and she started to get yelled at he said she wasn't doing the kicks right all a sudden and she was getting nervous.

Here, you can tell the instructor Thomas really cares about the kids' well being and learning. It's very affordable for all that you get, and you can tell the kids in class really love being here. The atmosphere overall is family oriented, and everyone helps one another. Thomas spends time with each student to ensure they are learning what they need. There's all levels here. It's a little different structure than what I was accustomed to when I was in karate, but he makes it work. :D

We need it down to two, but ultimately Ultimate Warrior because I came highly recommended by a trusted friend, and I agreed with the methodology of its owner Jake And his staff. They are firm and nurturing, disciplined, yet still fun. Other successful places in the area wasn't a great fit as they felt more industrial and performed for appearances than what I had in mind. I ultimately chose ultimate warrior for my son, because he has fun while learning to protect himself at a very natural pace. Further, because my son is clumsy... They also work on "how to" fall effectively. After just one of these classes, my son was riding horse riding and was bucked off the rear from about 6 foot off the ground. As he fell, he automatically went into a forward fall position and saved his face and glasses from hitting the ground. Needless to say, after seeing this, I am sold that the methods taught here are effective and strategies used for learning these skills are something that kids can relate to easily. An added bonus is that Jake must have a radar that draws in good people. All the parents I've met here have been really kind and so are the students and coaches.

Additionally, the coaches are highly skilled and experienced martial artists themselves. They run tough classes, at a pace that challenges the class without discouraging them. There's a real finesse to that, and the coaches at UW are impressively good at it. Belt test days (and the following potlucks) are a real opportunity to see the incredible work these coaches do with students of all ages and abilities. The potlucks and social events really show that UW wants to be part of our local community. From potlucks to parents nights out to holiday parties ... they always try to find time for fun, not only to reward their hard-working students, but to build bonds among them as well. We plan to stay at Ultimate Warrior as long as they'll have us! It's been a perfect match for our family. Inger Chandler
