I was happy to learn that Patrick was knowledgeable and clear in his instruction. He added some wholesome humor and was also very humble. He was clearly the pro in the room, but didn't make any of us feel inferior to his expertise. I am really happy with my new jiu jitsu self-defense moves I learned. God forbid I ever have to use them! Nonetheless, great to have, especially being a woman. If you're extremely uncomfortable with close physical contact with strangers, bring a friend or family member for partnering, orrrr try golf lol. You do get up close and personal. I wouldn't want my husband partnering with anyone but me. Just sayin'. There are a few benches for any who'd like to watch quietly. Liability waivers are prepared for signing before class. Not sure how Japanese do jiu jiutsu in comparison to Brazil, but I'm diggin' Brazil. Maybe you will too. Enjoy!

I bumped into the owner (TKD & BJJ Black Belt instructor) Jimmy Holmes before they opened this new location as I was peering through the windows after getting a coffee next door. I ended up getting a full tour of the facility & the plans for their use of the back building to be a competition/tournament sized mat space with a weight training setup as well. It is a beautiful facility, they're still doing upgrades here & there, but my favorite little fact about it is that the dumbbell rack in the back goes all the way up to 150lbs!! They offer a great selection of youth classes with a mix of high level men & women instructors. The team, THE TEAM!! They have competition medal winners across the board in martial arts & a great team atmosphere! Boys, girls, men, women, tons of competitors & winners, but minimal ego. Personally, I was only living here while I completed an internship for my degree program, but they've been very welcoming & accommodating during my short stay with them. I look forward to visiting in the future & getting some rolls in on a Sunday Open Mat or Warrior Wednesday where we just roll 10 rounds in lieu of a structured BJJ class. All love, I'll be back!

My son who is now eight has been coming to this soho for one year. Before choosing, we've tried out…read morea class, in almost every existing studio in the Kuykendahl/Louetta Spring area. We need it down to two, but ultimately Ultimate Warrior because I came highly recommended by a trusted friend, and I agreed with the methodology of its owner Jake And his staff. They are firm and nurturing, disciplined, yet still fun. Other successful places in the area wasn't a great fit as they felt more industrial and performed for appearances than what I had in mind. I ultimately chose ultimate warrior for my son, because he has fun while learning to protect himself at a very natural pace. Further, because my son is clumsy... They also work on "how to" fall effectively. After just one of these classes, my son was riding horse riding and was bucked off the rear from about 6 foot off the ground. As he fell, he automatically went into a forward fall position and saved his face and glasses from hitting the ground. Needless to say, after seeing this, I am sold that the methods taught here are effective and strategies used for learning these skills are something that kids can relate to easily. An added bonus is that Jake must have a radar that draws in good people. All the parents I've met here have been really kind and so are the students and coaches.

Additionally, the coaches are highly skilled and experienced martial artists themselves. They run tough classes, at a pace that challenges the class without discouraging them. There's a real finesse to that, and the coaches at UW are impressively good at it. Belt test days (and the following potlucks) are a real opportunity to see the incredible work these coaches do with students of all ages and abilities. The potlucks and social events really show that UW wants to be part of our local community. From potlucks to parents nights out to holiday parties ... they always try to find time for fun, not only to reward their hard-working students, but to build bonds among them as well. I learned some martial arts but it was very expensive and not worth the injuries that I received from training with angry team members there. Recently found out my hospital imaging showed these injuries are severe and permanent. The owners immediately had yelp remove the picture of my MRIs and x-rays.
