I love biking or walking through the trails. I love how this park backs up to a neighborhood and feels quiet yet is still residential. There is a huge wooden play ground that overlooks a grass and rock replica of the USA complete with hills representing mountain ranges. You can walk the perimeter of it for a close up view, but the best vantage point is from the top of the hill. Many things to play on and do at Hagar Park. Every summer I am doubly impressed by their children's summer reading program. They go the extra mile to involve the children in reading and make them readers for life. I just attended a children's program--Rainforest Animals and it was wonderful. The kids enjoyed it so much. It's an excellent way to keep them occupied during the summer so that they aren't getting bored. I know that most people already have their own assigned library but I believe that you can still come here, especially for the children's programs. If you are from out of town I highly recommend coming to this library. Best staff, best selection, best programs.

Be warned - scenic beaches next to historic landmarks coupled with a campground within a state park…read moreon a summer afternoon, can be a handful. And the Grand Haven State Park is all that. The state park/beach is right next to the campground, which also accepts RVs so parking here can be tricky in summer --- which is when we visited. Plus there is a fee. The lighthouse/pier is very cool, but it is a bit of a hike from the campground. The two lighthouses - the tall one is the Inner, and the short one is the Outer - are right on the channel with water on either side, so it's a very nice walk, next to a steel framework in the middle, to the end of the pier, with good photo ops along the way. If you're lucky you may find free parking on the street for a short time period (1-3 hrs).

It is a really nice pier walk if you come all the way from the channel. But as far as the beach goes, the sand is really awful. There are a lot of rocks and shells and other junk mixed in with the sand that does not make it enjoyable or comfortable, or easy to walk in. There are plenty of other beaches to go to in the area that are nicer and less crowded.

We stayed in Spring Lake area and felt like it was close to everything - we really enjoyed the downtown social district, musical light show, and Norm's ice cream. Our favorite meals - breakfast at Morning Star, lunch at Lucky Sushi cafe, and dinner at The Unicorn Tavern. We did not anticipate the level of mosquitoes here and wished we had brought bug spray! We also never saw anywhere to do water activities on the beach, but enjoyed the hot sand and freezing lake water. We went north to Muskegon one day and south to Holland another day. All in all, Grand Haven offers a charming, quiet, small town vibe that we really appreciated!

While the lakeside location may be the big draw, we were here for the OTHER Michigan wet stuff, beer. It was amazing to hear about their history, experiences & passions, most of whom were brimming with pride & recommendations... all of whom were friendly & welcoming. I don't know exactly what I was expecting, but I know that our experiences exceeded our expectations. Unlike some other harbor/lake towns, there were lots of true locals milling about and many open businesses. I've added many bookmarks for our next trip out this way & there will certainly be a next trip.

Prior to the shutdown, I visited and looked for several books for my son. I did notice that some of the kids books, at least in the "dinosaur" section were pretty worn and old, so I was already worried about germs. Post pandemic, they are open limited hours and don't allow browsing in most sections, but I have still popped in several times to pick up books. They "quarantine" books upon return to make sure they are safely ready for the next visitor. Reading is a great thing to do during the pandemic, so keep visiting the library!

At least, that's kind of the impression I was left with from the Allendale Library. I can't knock their book selection or services offered at all because I'm not even a card-carrying member of this place. I live in the wrong county. But, I'm starting to think that's not such a bad deal after all. The staff here, although obviously competent, seems to really not give a crap about the patrons inside their workplace. I cannot tell you how many times I've been there only to find unruly children running amok, people chatting LOUDLY, cell phone conversations, and even the occasional person chowing down on some McDonald's or Burger King with their loud-ass paper sack and all. Come on... f'real? Yeah, they might have a decent book selection. They DO offer free WiFi (which is why I go there so much) and it CAN have moments where you might actually feel like you're in a library. But that seems to be few and far between for me. I wonder what happened to the library and when it became THE place to socialize. You would think with Allendale growing so rapidly because of GVSU, residents would find better places to take their social lives and uncontrollable kids. Allendale gets two stars just because of the free WiFi and because it looks like the place is kept up nice enough. However, if you're planning on actually doing anything that requires much concentration or anything much more than running in to grab a book and running right back out, well, I'd probably go check out some other library instead. This place kind of blows.
