The building is designed in a charming arts and crafts style and also serves as a starting area for the wonderful biking and walking trail nearby. The library has Internet equipped computers, adult and children's sections and a sunroom area with magazines, newspapers and comfy chairs. Any time I have orders items, the librarians are willing to check the status of the items and are pretty helpful. The one improvement I would like to see would be a few really comfy chairs or couches. The ones they have are Stickley style and have wood arms, which makes it a little more difficult to curl up in with a good book.

Today we saw Clark Lewis Juggling and the free show was excellent! He was juggling fire and chainsaws, performing hand stands while swallowing swords to name a few tricks. The best part? All of this was done to some heavy rock music for a punk edge. lol. During the summer they hide a golden book and offer prizes to those who find it. There is a seed catalogue for the community to benefit from, and in addition to taking out books there are also games, activity packs, movies, community experience passes (John Ball Park Zoo, Children's Museum etc.) and music that can be borrowed. They have a great kids section and the adult/ reference section upstairs has a cozy fire to curl up and read to. This summer they are hosting public movie nights, live music and farmer markets for the community. We love Georgetown Township Public Library. It is well managed, clean, bright, and always has something that serves the community.

At least, that's kind of the impression I was left with from the Allendale Library. I can't knock their book selection or services offered at all because I'm not even a card-carrying member of this place. I live in the wrong county. But, I'm starting to think that's not such a bad deal after all. The staff here, although obviously competent, seems to really not give a crap about the patrons inside their workplace. I cannot tell you how many times I've been there only to find unruly children running amok, people chatting LOUDLY, cell phone conversations, and even the occasional person chowing down on some McDonald's or Burger King with their loud-ass paper sack and all. Come on... f'real? Yeah, they might have a decent book selection. They DO offer free WiFi (which is why I go there so much) and it CAN have moments where you might actually feel like you're in a library. But that seems to be few and far between for me. I wonder what happened to the library and when it became THE place to socialize. You would think with Allendale growing so rapidly because of GVSU, residents would find better places to take their social lives and uncontrollable kids. Allendale gets two stars just because of the free WiFi and because it looks like the place is kept up nice enough. However, if you're planning on actually doing anything that requires much concentration or anything much more than running in to grab a book and running right back out, well, I'd probably go check out some other library instead. This place kind of blows.

We stayed in Spring Lake area and felt like it was close to everything - we really enjoyed the downtown social district, musical light show, and Norm's ice cream. Our favorite meals - breakfast at Morning Star, lunch at Lucky Sushi cafe, and dinner at The Unicorn Tavern. We did not anticipate the level of mosquitoes here and wished we had brought bug spray! We also never saw anywhere to do water activities on the beach, but enjoyed the hot sand and freezing lake water. We went north to Muskegon one day and south to Holland another day. All in all, Grand Haven offers a charming, quiet, small town vibe that we really appreciated!

While the lakeside location may be the big draw, we were here for the OTHER Michigan wet stuff, beer. Our visit allowed us the opportunity to really get to know some of the local business owners, brewers, staff & patrons. It was amazing to hear about their history, experiences & passions, most of whom were brimming with pride & recommendations... all of whom were friendly & welcoming. I don't know exactly what I was expecting, but I know that our experiences exceeded our expectations. Unlike some other harbor/lake towns, there were lots of true locals milling about and many open businesses. I've added many bookmarks for our next trip out this way & there will certainly be a next trip.

Be warned - scenic beaches next to historic landmarks coupled with a campground within a state park…read moreon a summer afternoon, can be a handful. And the Grand Haven State Park is all that. The state park/beach is right next to the campground, which also accepts RVs so parking here can be tricky in summer --- which is when we visited. Plus there is a fee. The lighthouse/pier is very cool, but it is a bit of a hike from the campground. The two lighthouses - the tall one is the Inner, and the short one is the Outer - are right on the channel with water on either side, so it's a very nice walk, next to a steel framework in the middle, to the end of the pier, with good photo ops along the way. If you're lucky you may find free parking on the street for a short time period (1-3 hrs).

It is a really nice pier walk if you come all the way from the channel. But as far as the beach goes, the sand is really awful. There are a lot of rocks and shells and other junk mixed in with the sand that does not make it enjoyable or comfortable, or easy to walk in. There are plenty of other beaches to go to in the area that are nicer and less crowded.
