Spring Gate Brewery Vs Spring Gate Winery. I know I've reviewed the winery. So I'm a little confused if my review was delete it or if now that it says brewery instead of winery there's "two locations". The thing is Spring Gate will always be successful because of the location. They have a beautiful venue. I know my other review started with saying- location location location. There is areas to sit around to talk to play games for food trucks and even fire pits. BUT the wine, in my personal opinion, is expensive for being subpar. Staff isn't always friendly and helpful. And the bathroom situation sucks. They have this tumblr you can buy for a slushy, it is 15.00. Heaven for bid you lose your straw, trust me. They do not have extras for purchase and will not give you another straw. I've even had a friend who forgot her Tumblr and she went back to asked if it was lost and found and they informed her that if people forget tumblers they just throw them out they don't save them. I guess my bottom line is what really speaks to me is they have a great location they charge too much for their wine and they don't practice what I would consider ethical customer service. It's just like the chairs there are so uncomfortable and they're obviously making a ton of money why not just buy nicer cushions for your customers who spent so much money when they go there? My friends love to go here so I'll visit with them but I would never pick this place on my own to visit. read more

Went for brunch on Sunday, $45 a couple, wish I could get my money back! First off they ran out of trays, hash browns, fruit, bacon, Donuts were overcooked, sausage was so spicy and was not labeled spicy miniature pancakes well only thing edible were the omelets. After talking to a person who goes there regularly, they say they go there when the food trucks are there because that's the only way you're going to get a decent meal. Had I known that I would not have wasted my time or money on their so-called brunch. Thankfully the company we had that day made up for their lack of professionalism. The ambiance was nice. The Mimosa was so so they could have charged $25 and it would not have been so hurtful. Always a good selection on tap, but glad they have a variety of lighter beers. Line can be long on busy, summer days with only one station to get beer. We like the outdoor seating area, and definitely think a larger beer bar would be nice. The popcorn machine is a great touch and always delicious. Took away a star due to having a happy hour special listed on their website, but when presented to the beer staff was told it wasn't valid ("we haven't had time to update that."). After a bit of a discussion and having to pull up the website with the manager, she honored it for that visit just for my boyfriend. read more

This is a hard place to judge since I'm extremely torn about my experience here. I'm from Southern California which is a veritable Mecca for beer (especially San Diego) and I fancy myself a huge beer geek so I'd like to think I have high standards. Additionally, we have some damn good wine locally as well from places like Temecula and of course Napa just to our north. So, being extremely critical of this place I would have had to give the offerings here just 3 stars. The wine was okay. I prefer sweet wines, of which they had many, but understand that sweet wine isn't necessarily good wine. So while I do recommend doing the wine flight, just know that sweet is the forward flavor in most, if not all, the samples. Beer, my true love. The beer here was okay. Nothing stood out to me and nothing offended me, which sucks because I had high hopes for this place. At the risk of sounding snobby, I make it my goal to travel around the world looking for delicious beer so I'd like to think I can speak on it with some authority and so my opinion is that the beer is just middle of the road - for my personal palate. That being said, this place overall deserves 5 stars. The setting and environment is absolutely gorgeous, our sommelier that served our flight was knowledgeable and personable and a pleasure to chat with. The bar area in the back had live music going on with free popcorn and plenty of TVs to watch Penn State play that day. Seriously, the ambience here is unparalleled. My lackluster review of the beer and wine notwithstanding, I would and will surely return here for more because of how cool this place is. I highly recommend this place! This was my first time stepping into the brewery side of spring gate and I definitely plan to be back. We came for their Oktoberfest weekend which was also a bring your own stein night which they'd fill up a growler for you for $5! That's a fun deal. It was also happy hour from 8-10 and our beers were only $3. When we stepped up to order I saw a sign that said "our beer is so good you'll want a whole glass. We do not give samples". I can accept that at $3 a glass but then when we got to the front I said; "I'll try the apple Saison please." Meaning The Whole glass and he gave me a sample! I thought that was so nice. Also he gave the kid in front of us a pretzel and when the mom asked, "how much?" He just waved her off. It's little service touches like that that set a place over the edge for me. As for the beer...eh it's okay. The apple saison was tart and crisp. I tried a Belgian next and I couldn't even finish it. It was too malty for me and almost had a "skunky" taste to it. My husband tried the barley pale ale which he enjoyed and then the cream ale which looked a little discolored and tasted off so he could not drink it. We tried a pretzel. $1 but eh not a good pretzel. It was cold and flavorless. There were also food trucks available that I've tried in the past with the winery and are good but we didn't tonight. Again the service was so good and the prices were so good we just figured this for a bad batch and we're happy to return to try again! We had a great time sitting at a table watching the live music and looking around at the people of all ages dancing and enjoying the night. It really goes to show how atmosphere and service can make a not so good product not be the thing you remember when you leave. The wine, I know, is good for the most part and their beer will get there too. read more

Spring Gate Brewery has grown and excelled so much since they opened! When they first started they had 3 beers on tap, which is great for the first steps, but now within a year and half they have a constant 10 beers on tap and 1 in bottle! The quality is top notch, it's evident that the brewers take pride in their work. They are always coming out with new beers, I've seen plenty of variety throughout the changing of the seasons! The Brewery and Winery together have events and festivals every weekend now! So unique for Central Pennsylvania! And they have live music and food trucks on site into the evening every night they are open! (Wednesday-Sunday) The fire pits, live music, and classic games combined with flavorful, craft beer and food trucks make for the perfect night out with friends, family, or your special someone. I have been here many times and it is definitely a place to visit if you have not been here. The ciders, bubbly drinks and wines are certainly a crowd pleaser. They have many ciders or bubbly's that you probably never tried but you will try them all once you visit. They usually have food trucks readily available! My only beef would be, if you get a glass of cider it is a flute which is the smallest glass ever! So get the sampler or by a bottle and drink it there. You will get your moneys worth that way! read more

I would have given it 5 stars but the are very pet unfriendly. I received a somewhat lame excuse about why pets could not be there. When there are other winery/breweries/outdoor restaurants in the area that are pet friendly I found the reason a bit shallow. Note that I am only reviewing the brewery, as there is also a winery too. It's in a really nice quiet county setting. Live music is often acoustic and toned down a little. Seems to attract a younger and affluent crowd. The beers that they offered were are all of a Belgium type, even the IPA. One was a fruit based. As is the case for many new breweries, they want to offer something different- not necessary good. There is definitely room for improvement as they grow. So we drove in where the sign and arrow pointed and upon entering the parking lot were told to exit by the parking attendant who wouldn't respond to our question of where to park. NOT a good first impression and signage for parking is completely lacking. We finally find the brewery and ordered 2 flights of beers but the flights are not labeled in accordance with the tap menu so you don't really know what you're drinking. Cool place but there a many things I would improve upon. Food trucks are cool. Friendly people in all of them. read more
