Reppin' The Nation and enjoying some brews.
    John B.

We've been coming to Spring Brews Festival for several years now dating back to when it was known as the Winter Brews fest. By "we" I mean myself and my lovely wife, kicking and screaming the whole way. The things she does to make me happy. This being our fifth year attending in a row, we were very fortunate to score a pair of tickets courtesy of Yelp. It doesn't really factor into review since I had planned to go anyways. This just meant we had some extra dough to buy an early dinner afterwards in order to soak up all that delicious beer. Even though we went to the front of the line, I noticed that they reorganized the line in a much more orderly fashion. In addition, they began allowing people in slightly before noon even though the pours weren't too begin until the magic hour. This seems to be an improvement over years past with the line snaking around the block. Once the brews began pouring they didn't stop. All the big names you could ask for were there. Okay most of them. No Moonraker in sight. Most of them were pouring stuff I hadn't tried yet. A few phoned it in with kegs of stuff you can buy at your local grocery store and some just sent cans which is kinda lame. However as a whole, most breweries brought unique beers to try. Which is really the whole point to a craft beer festival. With 60 or so breweries offering 2-4 or more beers on tap it's difficult to try it all but I sure gave it a go. The key is to begin with the lighter stuff, then slowly move to the heavy hitters. Of course this could also mean missing out when the beer n00bs suck up all the DIPA and Triples before you get the chance to try it. Since 2018 is the year of the haze most breweries seemed to offer one of those this year. Nobody did it better than Almanac with their Don't Call it Frisco. I enjoy that Drake's usually does a special beer at predetermined times. This year was Black Label Drakonic. More breweries need to change it up like this. This has always been my favorite Bay Area craft beer festival. Even still, there is room for improvement. I think they've officially hit ticket capacity as this year seemed more crowded than ever. Also the layout seemed to put more vendors in the middle near the sidewalks which means there was almost no room to walk with lines on both sides. Why was Rare Barrel right in the middle? You know they've gonna have a big ass line! The water for the portable sinks also ran out before the event got started as did the hand sanitizer in the port-a-potties. The food vendors are an after thought filled with mostly no name food trucks. That could use improvement or just make room for more drinking space and get rid of them altogether. None of this keeps the event from being five stars. I'll be back again next year regardless if they make these few minor improvements or not. 10th Annual Spring Brews Fest here I come!

Another year, another great Winter Brews Festival in Concord! I am so glad that the Brewing Network chose Concord for the festival location once again. I loved all the beer booths, but I really enjoyed the home brew tent, which had a variety of something like 20 different home brews to try. Awesome! I had an amber which was very tasty. We lucked out with amazing weather. Everyone seemed to be in high spirits. Looking forward to the Summer Brew Festival...I hope they come back in June!

This was my first time going to the Spring Brews Festival and it was sooo worth it! All the different vendors were so nice and friendly and open to answering questions. I'm glad there were so many toilets but sad that we ran out of water to wash our hands so soon. Is that gonna keep me from going next year? Heck No!!!! Can't wait till next year

    Good times!

We drive up and there's tent after tent, a band playing, rides for the kids! I had no idea it was Concord's Oktoberfest. Bands included: the Volker Strifler Band, The Squeegees, and The Red Hot Chachkas. I'm sure there were more in the lineup throughout the day. There was a polka costume parade and polka lessons! You could buy a pass and sample seven different beers from local microbreweries. But the very best thing about Concord's Oktoberfest was Cyclecide. The first ride I saw looked like it might be the first ever merry-go-round. But after talking to the Cyclecide guy managing the line, their rides are all one-of-a-kind, made from salvaged parts, powered by pedaling. Awesome. This is a good description of Cyclecide, taken from their website: "Cyclecide is a touring freak show that showcases muscle-powered contraptions welded together from bits of bikes salvaged from junk heaps, scaffolding, and car parts. FAULT LINES SPRING 2007" Another good description: "... here is the basic recipe: rent Mad Max and Pee Wee's Big Adventure, toss them in a nuclear reactor together, and watch the ensuing mutant merriment"... Boise Weekly Sept. 2004 My kids did three of their rides, two of which were merry-go-round-ish. One pedal-powered by whoever brought the kids there, the other powered by the kids themselves. The third was a solo-ride. You sat on a tiny bike seat contraption about 4 inches from the ground, pedaled, and spun 'round like mad. My kids didn't get it going very fast, but had a blast nonetheless. The older set who did this ride (clearly aiming to increase their already apparent buzz) pedaled so hard and spun so fast that the thing kind of crept around on the grass. Every single one of them got up and nearly fell over from dizziness. They were fun to watch. My pics to be posted soon, but until then, visit their site: www.cyclecide.com Yay Concord for bringing this to Todos Santos.

If we hadn't found parking we would have been so out of luck & would have left early & been disappointed... This Walnut Creek Art & Wine Festival was held at Heather Farm park. Lovely and huge. Thank goodness for portapotties strategically placed. Unfortunately my wife tried the lobster roll at Chicken at the Farm. It was horrible. I stuck with the chicken teriyaki bowl which was delicious & opened right at 11 AM. Great service at that foodie tent. Hibiscus cooler & mango slushy was also a winner at a different vendor tent. This park had the biggest playground we had ever seen. Lucky for families with children! Also a pond too! There were wine sampling & beer gardens for those interested. We found a shady area to listen to the music. I did lose my wife as she was wandering the park to check out the various craft vendors. She found one lady working there in the slim wallet tent who wore these beautifully patterned baggy pants that looked like they were from Thailand but probably from California some 30 years ago! Omgosh they are truly back in style! My wife was so jelly!!! I lucked out as she didn't spend a fortune on anything but food & drink. Whew what a relief! Trying to downsize! Like what is that??? LOL Don't forget to swing by the Safeway tent & get your free apple. PIZAZZ!!! Humongous but worth it...I think we tried it recently back home at the last Farm to Fork Festival. Seriously!

Some of my favorite breweries were on the outside area. Epidemic Ales you rock!!! Altamont brewery love ya. Calicraft brewery, I was happy to see you. I don't know if it was a local ordinance but there was beer inside the festival. But I wanted the ones on the outside area. Give them a try!!!

I saw an Instagram announcing the festival which happened to be on a weekend that wasn't going to be too hot. A perfect opportunity. The festival is in a location that is in the middle of several neighborhoods and the city allows parking on the north side of Treat. Even with the large crowds the parking is abundant in the nearby neighborhoods and on Treat. We parked a short less than 5 minute walk away. The festival had a variety of food: Teriyaki Chicken Meal, Beef Teriyaki, Gyoza, Tempura, Sushi, Hot Dogs, Shaved Ice and Desserts. They had games for the kids, tours of the temple and a gift shop. Unfortunately I had an unsettled stomach so I was only able to try the Teriyaki Beef and some Desserts. The beef was tasty, small pieces and cooked well done so a bit toward the drier side. The cookies and brownie were chewy and delicious. I also tried the peanut brittle which was light, buttery and not overly sweet. I'm looking forward to next year so I can try the Tempura and Gyoza along with the Desserts. Fun outdoor event with food that supports a worthy cause. No entrance or parking fees in an easily accessible venue.

There was no cost to attend either - it was completely free! Participating restaurants included Mi Oficina Computer Café (which was awesome because I didn't realize they served dessert and coffee inside their store). They are next to El Molino (another participant) and I've never been inside before - I look forward to checking them out and getting some more of their awesome coffee. El Molino (http://www.yelp.com/biz/tortilleria-el-molino-concord?hrid=wclLGJ2vKC2MVB02wDRIjA&utm_campaign=www_review_share_popup&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=(direct)) handed out tacos with fresh salsa on their homemade tortillas. (They didn't serve it today, but Mercado Del Sol has some of the hottest salsa you can find on Monument.) When we finished at the event we actually headed straight to the market to buy some of the sauce. It was a lot like sour cream, but with a noticeably more cheesy flavor - very good! Korean BBQ Plus! (http://www.yelp.com/biz/korean-bbq-plus-concord?hrid=WGy3b1FSJK6F2a0px7dqhQ&utm_campaign=www_review_share_popup&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=(direct)) was there with delicious noodle samples, as well as their next door neighbor, the Concord Hankook Market (aka Concord Korean Market) (http://www.yelp.com/biz/concord-korean-market-concord?hrid=hNK7Ajo2gzh-2-5rYMdrug) with seaweed and hot sauce samples. Sapore Restaurant was there also but I don't think they were sampling any fare. Habitat for Humanity's Restore store moved into the back of the bowling alley (they resized/downsized a couple years ago and made the huge building into two businesses). Had it not been for today's event I don't think I would have known there was a store there. They are surprisingly spacious and have lots of home goods from couches to refrigerators to toilet repair kits; counters, flooring, lighting, and more! At this event, they had a Wheel of Win with prizes, like flash lights and light bulbs. (Other sponsors of the event included Farmers Insurance, Dolan's Lumber, and Monument Impact.) Live music from the Lucid Rays (https://www.facebook.com/LucidRays/) was terrific and entertained festival-goers, as well as an appearance by Concord's Mayor Tim Grayson! There was a raffle for adults and games for children. Planned by the creative minds of the Monument Business Network, this was really a well-organized and fun community event for the residents of Concord. We really enjoyed all the food and will definitely be there for the 3rd Annual event next year!
