I ordered their Thanksgiving holiday box, and it exceeded my expectations! What you get from Kau Kau Box is a box (obvi) of chef-prepared meals, plus local eggs, fish, and produce. Vegetarian meals are available, too. There are pickups available for Tuesdays and Saturdays, each with different menus. You can purchase a subscription to save $$ or just purchase individual boxes as you need them. It has been on my radar screen for a while now, but I finally took the plunge, and I'm hooked. Pickup at Ala Moana was super easy. I drove up, gave them my name, opened my trunk, and was back on the road within seconds. The pickup location is off Atkinson, and it's easiest if you drive down Atkinson toward Ala Moana Blvd - the entrance is on your right, with Kau Kau Box signs to guide you. If you turn up Atkinson from Ala Moana, you have to make an awkward series of turns to get there. Delivery is also available for an additional fee. For Thanksgiving, the box $134 + tax) included 4 slices of roast turkey breast, 4 giant bone-in pork chops, mashed potatoes with caramelized onions, a savory bread pudding with butternut squash and manchego cheese - an elevated stuffing, turkey gravy, cranberry-orange sauce, spiced apple chutney, challah bread, jus for the pork, pumpkin crunch, a chunk of nairagi fish, 2 heads of lettuce, freshly-made croutons, cherry tomatoes, 2 avocados, 2 papaya, a butternut squash, and a dozen medium eggs. We are a family of 3 (2 adults, one 6yo), and this box has fed us for days. We got Thanksgiving dinner and Friday lunch out of the turkey, bread pudding, potatoes, cranberry sauce, gravy, and challah (I added some brussels sprouts). We got 2 dinners from the pork chops and salad/croutons (I added some mac and cheese). A couple breakfasts of avocado toast and papaya from the leftover challah and avocados (um, and also the pumpkin crunch). I still have the butternut squash to cook, and I stashed the fish in the freezer for later because I knew we'd already have days of food with everything else. When I opened the box, it seemed like way more than I was expecting. Everything comes in containers or vacuum-sealed packages for reheating. There are also instructions on reheating everything, so if you're not sure what should go together, you have help. Everything was labeled with best-by dates for both the fridge and the freezer. The menu and instructions also included a recipe for deviled eggs. Everything tasted so fresh and well-prepared, even the things I just microwaved. I LOVE to cook, and I cook at home most everyday, but this pandemic has just burned me out. I've been trying to limit my trips out and about, and planning meals 2-3 weeks in advance is a lot of mental labor. So I really appreciate meals that I don't have to think really hard about - maybe just a side here and there - and can be heated without hours of prepwork in the kitchen. The ordering process through the website was a breeze. There are great package options, however I opted for a customized list so I could add some goodies that would spoil my parents. My list included the usual eggs, milk, bagels, etc, with the addition of special items such as wine, cheese, and rotisserie chicken. I uploaded my list and waited. About 8 hours later I got a call from Diana with a friendly ALOHA! to start this terrific experience. It was pretty obvious Diana's labor is one of love. Not only did she clarify the items on my list, she suggested to add certain Hawaii staples that I wouldn't have even thought of! For the curious folks, those items include Macadamia Nut Chocolates, fresh fruit, and Tuna Poke salad that she guaranteed my parents would die for. I gave Diana the details of my parents' trip and so the rest of the surprise was in her hands. Fast forward to 2 days later. My parents had a 9hr flight to Oahu, and by the time they got to their hotel they were famished. They entered their room that had a breathtaking view, and a little something something extra... A huge basket of goodies on the kitchen counter (see photo)!! It took them a minute to add 1 + 1 and they called me squealing with happiness because I saved them from the hassle of figuring out where to get food. The food held them over for about 3 days and everything was fresh and tastey! I put my trust in Diana to pick certain items like wine and cheese by giving her a general idea of what they liked, and she delivered above and beyond! Not to mention that infamous tuna poke salad that my mom still raves about!! All in all this experience was great for all parties involved and I will definitely be using this service for my own purposes when I go to Hawaii in May. Quality of produce varies- now that businesses will be opening up next week, timing was perfect. For myself, I'd choose fresh and unblemished produce. Percentage wise, 70% of the time the items were okay. The remaining items I'd personally would have not chosen the quality of some items I.e., wilted, slimy ends in plastic bag, blemished dings or scratches on items, nicks in skin of produce. For this last order the items were good. Unlike last week's driver, who rang the doorbell, different driver today never sent a final text or notification that produce had arrived. With this heat, lettuce would suffer. Be cautious. My four deliveries were a gift yet I received a message after my 3rd delivery that I owed $50+- unbelievable. Also was told someone put a hold on my delivery and did I want to activate up again. Seemed screwy,and undoubtedly alarming to me. I tried to keep calm and composed so that there wouldn't be a backlash on what was in my final bag. I'm glad someone surprised me with this as a gift. Gave me the chance to experience delivery to my front door. Rocky start but remaining 3 deliveries got better. Super glad I received regular sized tomatoes and head lettuce vs loose leaf for this ending delivery. Live and let learn. Note: you need to be a lover of veggies.
