The barman was extremely friendly and chatty and we sat on the sofas by the roaring fireplace which felt like being at home. The food was good and not too expensive. It is a rather big venue so I guess it may get pretty full in the evenings but it was nice and quiet when we were there on Sunday afternoon.

We went along on a Sunday lunchtime to celebrate my fiance's mum's birthday with another friend. We were taken to our table straight away and asked for our drink order by a waitress. The drinks were served promptly and the conversation began to flow. Forty five minutes later, the conversation stalled when we realised how long we'd been waiting to have our food order to be taken. We thought we had to order at the bar maybe, so my fiance enquired at the bar and was told it was table service. A different waitress took our order. Half an hour later our food was served. The chips served with the scampi meal were nearly cold and the pheasant had been overcooked. We waited twenty minutes for someone to clear our table. A third waitress came to do so and asked how our meals had been. Queue awkward pause before I piped up with the fact that my meal had been OK, followed by silence from my fellow diners. She put the plates back down on the table and sharply asked what was wrong with the rest of it. My company wanted to complain about the relevant problems without creating a scene and felt intimidated with her attitude, so said nothing. She cleared the table saying she'd get the pudding board, but didn't come back. We flagged down a waiter to get the pudding board. A fair while later someone came to take our order, but after waiting a further half hour for the puddings to arrive, my fiance enquired to their whereabouts at the bar. As soon as he sat back down, they all appeared. No one came to clear our table and after waiting for another 20 minutes, my fiance went to pay at the bar and found that no one acknowledged his presence for a time longer than he deemed appropriate. He had to make an effort to get their attention. Throughout the meal, not one waiter/waitress asked if everything was ok. It was Sunday lunchtime, but it wasn't busy and they seemed short staffed. I honestly wondered if they would have noticed us if we'd walked out without paying.

There vegetarian main is the only thing that stopped this being a 5 star. It was filling but a little disappointing in the flavour department. I'd thoroughly advise this pub for a drink or a meal. Surely with a visit. Whatever problems were present a few years back the Thomas Lord has sorted them out.

Inside the pub is plit into two sides each with little spaces so although the pub is big it feels really cosy. When the cold really sets in they light fires which is amazing (if you can get a table near it!) The style is traditional and it is kept in a really good state. There is plenty of parking at the back of the pub and a large outside area with heaters (for the smokers :o) ). The only bad experince I have had there was with a friend who was on a diet, she asked for a ceaser salad without ceaser dressing and parmesan and was told it would be best if she ordered something else!!! which I though was disgusting! However the food is lovely and in all my time of going there that was my only bad experience! One thing to note, if your paying by card you have to open a tab to buy food and drinks as you can't buy food from the bar or drinks from the food order point which can be a bit of a pain!

It was a hot May day and there was a roaring log fire which was another turn off (but a great feature in winter no doubt) The bad: I had a very hotly anticipated pint of TEA. I used to live in the area so know this tipple well. It was a very poor pint which had a sour undertaste. Perhaps the pipes weren't cleaned or something. Anyway, I can't damn all their beers from this single pint and sometimes a bad pint is how it goes, but I wasn't left terribly impressed.

They have a fabulous wine list, with super chilled wine (this is so so important, and so many restaurants get this wrong!), and beautiful, hearty portions of food. I had the sea bass - would recommend! mmmmm. In summer I can imagine that sitting out in the large beer garden would be just a delight. in fact, i am going to ensure that i do that one afternoon/evening in the summer next year. The accomodation is superb - 13 rooms, most suites - mine even had its own office, equipped with wifi. In addition to the good food, its also a free house, so a wide choice of ale and lager. It took us a while to even get menus and then another 20 minutes to have our drinks orders taken - by then half our party had walked round the to pub, into the bar and brought their drinks back thru the pub instead of waiting for the 'table service'. Once our order was taken food was pretty quick and was really good - good generous portions, great flavours. We were all up for desert but having not seen a waitress in half an hour we decided to hunt one down and get the cheque and just leave. When we went inside to pay we expected to see all the tables occupied - there were FOUR waitresses working the shift - there was no one inside - these four waitresses were doing the worst job ever of serving 3 tables (Us being one) outside. Would recommend for the food but just order at the bar and save yourself the hassle of waiting for LITERALLY everything!
