The biggest disappointment is that Charleston still can't seem to produce a truly authentic New York-style bagel. A real New York bagel has a distinctive chew, a crisp exterior, and a depth of flavor that's hard to describe until you've had one. Jeff's gets close enough to remind you what you're missing, but never quite delivers that authentic experience. I understand their concept is grab-and-go, but it feels incomplete. There are no signature breakfast sandwiches or creative menu items that make you want to come back, and there's not even a place to sit and enjoy your food. It's essentially bagels, cream cheese, coffee, and out the door. That's fine if the bagel is unforgettable--but when it isn't, there's not much left to separate it from the competition. This visit also left me wondering why the Charleston area still doesn't have a destination-worthy Jewish deli or authentic New York-style bagel shop. After recently visiting an authentic bagel shop in Knoxville, I was reminded just how much we're missing.
