I went in for a cut. The space was welcoming and spacious. My stylist Andrew greeted me by the front and helped hang my coat and offered me beverages. He proceeded to ask me about my desired look and offered his professional opinion. The dry cut came out great and I am very satisfied with my new do. Although they are pricey, their service is worth it! Am definitely recommending to my friends. read more

Had an amazing trim cut experience with my stylists Akeem Ray. Check-in was fast, warm, and friendly. He is thoughtful and ask me how do I style my hair usually before the cut. The scalp message and wash is amazing. The cut was excellent, very precise and time efficient. Akeem kindly finished off the cut with a great blowout and style! Loved the clean studio and chat with Akeem. Will def book appointment in the future! The location is very easy to find, literally right next to the RW 23rd train station. read more

For almost 10 years I've gone to *Carmen Powers* for all of my hair care needs, especially now, for coloring. Because my hair can be "a handful" to work with, I was very nervous when I first met Carmen. This being said, she approached the "mop" on my head with absolute gentle care and assured confidence- and made me look fabulous!! Fast forward almost a decade later, I don't hesitate to contact Spoke and Weal to schedule an appointment with her. Carmen is not only an wonderful person, she's an incredible colorist and stylist. She's consistent and completely reliable. She carefully assesses your hair needs while incorporating your desires for whatever style you like. It's been a long journey with all the different hairstyles I've worn and coloring needs over the years; having Carmen by my side in helping me feel better about my appearance, especially now during such difficult times across the globe, is a tremendous blessing. I'm grateful to have met her and have someone so AWESOME to work with on my hair!! Thank you Carmen for being who you are!! read more

Let me start by saying this is the best haircut I've ever had. I was able to get a last minute appointment with Matt (at the flatiron location) and he was amazing. He really listened to what I was looking for and ACTUALLY delivered. Previous haircuts from other salons have been a huge let down. I am so happy that I've finally found my stylist after living in New York for 5 years. My haircut was more expensive than when I'm used of paying, but honestly well worth it! read more

Spoke & Weal - Haircut by Matt! - Hair Salons Near Me - New York, New York

Spoke & Weal is a great salon- clean, sent out covid procedures in advance. It was my first time having a dry cut and I'm a fan. Akeem Ray was wonderful and detail oriented. He patiently explained the difference between two styles I was considering and followed up a few times to make sure the length and styling was what I intended. Loved the way he styled it at the end of the cut. He knows what he's doing! read more

I went for a cut and a wash and go at the SoHo location. The stylist was very sweet and cut my hair wonderfully. However, when it came to the styling/wash and go the products used were not for my hair texture and left my hair dry and looking as if I hadn't been styled at all. Not black girl hair friendly please do not come here type 4 girls. read more

I followed Matt Mellott from the Grand St. location to the new FlatIron salon. Why? Because he is AWESOME! I have straight, limp hair, and when I leave Spoke & Weal, I feel like a goddess. About the salon: it's lovely. Everyone who works there is friendly and helpful. The salon is spacious, light and airy. It's got a great vibe without trying too hard. Back to the haircut: Spoke & Weal uses a special technique where they cut your hair dry. The results are exceptional - no surprises about cutting the hair too short, and you get great hair volume and movement. Don't worry, you still get a great shampoo with Aveda products (they smell so nice), AND a head massage. One other thing I adore about Matt is that he never rushes. He sits down with you first and has a good chat about what you want. It's a great conversation. He'll question you and make suggestions, clarify what you do and do not want. I love this place! read more

After years of going to many salons and trying to connect with a colorist I've finally found the perfect place. I booked an appointment with Eric and he fulfilled all my dreams. I have difficult AF hair to color, it can turn brassy very quick. He managed to do everything that I've asked for and more. I went for a balayage manageable type look, I wanted to lighten my very dark hair. I also get my haircut with Sarah who are the soho location. If you have curly hair I recommend going to her because she understands how hard it is to manage! 10/10 would recommend, I enjoyed my entire experience here and can't wait to come back. read more

This post is long overdue! Akeem did my hair a few weeks ago and it was so so so fabulous. I got so many compliments. I was there for a wash, cut, blow &style. I was super happy when I left because he listened to exactly what I wanted to get done. He made it extra special when I told him it was for my birthday. The salon was also upto COVID standards. Temperature check when you get there, social distancing and everyone at all times had masks on....even while dealing with blow dryer heat! Overall, very delighted. I would definitely visit the salon and Akeem again. read more

Spoke & Weal - Beach waved styled hair! - Hair Salons Near Me - New York, New York

I decided to try out Spoke and Weal on a whim and I'm so happy I did! The space is great, everyone is hospitable and they even offer a black T-shirt to change into so as to keep your clothes from getting dirty. My stylist, Addison, was amazing. He is the only person I want touching my hair going forward. The balance between listening and suggesting was perfect. Also great conversation! I am so happy with my haircut, ask for Addison. read more

Erika was amazing!! I went to another salon in NYC and had my hair dyed almost jet black and super damaged. She totally fixed my hair took me back to my natural light brown color (but better) with no damage! I've never had a better hair experience, will definitely be a regular now, thank you Erika! read more

After tons of research I decided on the new location of S&W. The salon is beautiful and brand new. Andrew did an excellent job on my haircut and he was so nice! I am so happy with how it turned out! They cut the hair while it is dry as opposed to wet cut which is super cool actually. He was very communicative and made sure I was happy along the way with the process. I will certainly return to Andrew for another haircut. read more

My hair stylist was Akeem (his IG is @Akeemkilledit if you want to check him out). He was so friendly and nice! Akeem was super attentive and made sure everything was the length I wanted. I loved how he made sure I was comfortable with everything the whole time. I had a general idea of what type of cut I wanted but wasn't too sure. Akeem made some suggestions based on my current hair and the reference photos I sent and just WOW! I love my new hair! My hair feels lighter and the cut was exactly what I wanted and better thanks to Akeem! My appointment was also right on time so I didn't need to sit there waiting. The salon overall was very clean and the staff was very professional! Thank you again Akeem! read more

One word. Karen Miller. I am biracial and have a curly texture of hair a lot of stylists are intimidated to work with. My scraggly, damaged. frizzy, hair was transformed. She hooked me up with a manageable, chic, and sophisticated cut. Karen is officially the "CURLY HAIR/TEXTURED HAIR WHISPERER". She also is extremely personable, intelligent and takes her craft VERY seriously. BRAVO Karen!!! ‍‍ read more

Carmen Powers has been my hairdresser since 2005. I have flown across the country for her to do my hair on several occasions. I revere her work and deeply appreciate her talent. I highly recommend Carmen to anyone who loves their hair. LE read more

I'd heard of Spoke & Weal from a friend who had visited their Soho location and sang their praises. Recently, I was trying to book a haircut and found that they had opened a new location closer to where I live. I was pleasantly surprised to see that there were appointments available the next day (a Saturday) - a rarity in NYC, where you often have to book a month in advance to get a slot that isn't in the middle of a weekday. I'm guessing the availability is because this is still a relatively new location, but hopefully it remains this easy to get an appointment going forward... :) I booked with Victoria, who I remembered from Yelp reviews of the Soho location. My requests were fairly simple - I hadn't cut my hair in a while and just wanted a little bit off the ends, more layers/shaping, and overall thinning out (I have super thick hair). From start to finish, she was very efficient and listened to my requests while still applying her hair cutting expertise to give me a great finished look. They start with a scalp massage (you get to pick an essential oil, peppermint or lavender!), then shampoo, cut, and style. And finally, one of my biggest pet peeves at salons is that they always blow out your hair at the end, which in my opinion just doesn't look good on me/my hair texture. Victoria blow dried my hair straight and put a little bit of wave in with a flat iron - it looked so good that I'm considering getting a flat iron so I can do it at home (me, a girl who doesn't blow dry, use styling products, or even brush my hair most days). Long story short: I don't remember the last time I left a hair salon excited about my haircut - most times I just think "eh it looks fine". But I'm already looking into booking my next appointment with Victoria, because there's no way her schedule is going to stay open for long. She isn't inexpensive, but considering I only cut my hair 3 times or so a year, she's totally worth every penny. read more

Akeem was amazing. He conferred with me on what I wanted with my haircut and had suggestions when I wanted them but wasn't pushy or anything like that. He is precise and it shows, this is by far this best haircut I have gotten in a while. And personally, I can get a little anxious when hairdressers try to chat me up during an appointment, which Akeem got wind of pretty quickly and respected. We had a couple jokes during the appointment but no obligatory small talk, which I GREATLY appreciated. If you are one to like to talk during an appointment though, he seems like a very chill and easy going person who would be easy and willing to talk to, so it's win win. The salon was very nice and clean and had an overall feel of a spa, including rooms where you change into a robe or comfy t-shirt and a peppermint or lavender oil-scented head and shoulder massage before getting your hair washed. Great experience, I will be back. read more

I began getting my haircut and colored at Spoke & Weal in SoHo back in 2018. I decided to switch my hairstylist last year and had the pleasure of meeting Zorka. She moved to the new Flatiron location and I gladly followed. She is an amazing stylist and incredibly talented. Even more importantly, she is a beautiful soul and always brightens my day. I always look forward to going to visit her for an amazing cut and a good chat. read more

Had a great experience getting my haircut at Spoke & Weal. The Flatiron salon is very open and airy and clean. My stylist Akeem was awesome. He was very attentive to my hair needs and concerns regarding the look I was going for and continued to check in with me during the entire process making sure I was comfortable with the direction of the cut/style. He took into account that I have relatively fine hair with not a tremendous amount of density, and the end result was just what I was looking for: something simple and effortless with the feeling of fuller hair and slightly more bounce. Definitely recommend him and the salon for an overall wonderful experience! read more

I had my hair cut with Akeem Ray today. What a great job! I am in love with my new look. He is THE professional -stylist and cutter, extremely nice and warm. The place is very friendly and very modern. Perfect timing! I am impressed and highly recommend for those especially with thin and tired hair. Akeem - you know exactly what you are doing! Visited Spoke & Weal's Flatiron location for the first time a few months ago to have my color done by Carmen. She was wonderful. She listened carefully during our consultation and asked great questions about the color I wanted and the level of maintenance. She suggested feathering the color at my roots, so the grow-out would be less severe which has turned out to be great! Beautiful color, kind, and professional! read more

Had an appointment for color with Gemma - she is awesome. Gemma took the time to listen to what I wanted and flip through a bunch of pictures. I have almost black hair and was going for chocolate/caramel ombré. I love the result. I also really appreciated that she was super gentle with my hair and knew how to deal with fine/thin hair. Highly recommend her!! read more

If I could, I would give this 6 stars. This was my second time with AKEEM and he is the best! I showed him photos of what I was looking to have done and asked his opinion on what might work best on me. Akeem gave an incredibly professional and detailed explanation about the way my hair fell naturally, where there was too much weight, and how he would work through the cutting process. He is SO meticulous and precise and every layer he built was so natural! My hair is now so light while still looking full and texturized! Akeem is hilarious, genuine, and made me feel super comfortable the entire time. I did a lot of research before choosing Spoke and Weal and so glad that I did and met Akeem. He is so talented and passionate about his work and it shows as he takes his time with your hair. Get your hair cut here and ask for Akeem - you will seriously love your hair after!! Thank you so much @akeemkilledit !!!! read more

I chose this salon on a whim one afternoon while visiting NYC simply because it had availability and was close to my hotel. Addison my stylist was great, after showing him a few photos he really understood the look I was after. He wasn't afraid to tell me what would and wouldn't suit me, I appreciated his honesty. We chopped off probably about 7inches, my hair turned out much better than I hoped. No regrets. Will definitely seek out Addison when I'm next in New York. read more

I was sent here on a referral by a friend and I will go back again and again and again. It was my first time at their salon and I met with Zorka to cut off a lot of my length and totally restyle my hair. I couldn't recommend this salon or this stylist more! They are clean, efficient, professional and polished. Zorka was patient and talented -- the perfect stylist for a big change in hair style. Highly recommend. read more

I went to get a keratin treatment and trim. I came in a bit late but they were very flexible with time. To be honest I do think it was overpriced, especially the trim. Also the fact that my edges were still kinky and my hair poofed a teeny bit as soon as I left. Overall I think the stylist Matt did an average job at best. read more

Matt crushed it. I had a terrible lob haircut I've been trying to grow out. He walked me through the plan to fix then set up my hair up for growth. Not only did his cut fix my styled hair, when I let my hair air dry it's already more manageable. 100% will be returning to Matt ongoing. read more

Jennifer Sarchet is a color genius! Jen did my color when we both lived in LA. She was an employee of my friends salon in Silver Lake (shoutout to The Eatablishment Salon!).
