I started with Spire in 1988 and have been very happy with my experiences. There was a short period of time during the switchover to Blaze that cause a few access problems. But that is resolved with the exception of ease of paying by phone. I still highly recommend their services, especially responses to fraud that happened on my account. read more

My experience with CUs, since the early '80s, has shown them to be vastly superior to banks, S & Ls, or any other financial institutions for Joe Average customers like me. When all your dealings (with your "bank") amount to a checking account, a savings account, and a car loan (every decade or so), the small, family-like atmosphere of a CU is a welcome release from "modern life". On the phone, it took me minutes to talk to a person who solved my problem, while my wife waited on hold with TCF/Huntington Bank. I did not start online banking until ~ 2022, but utilized it for tracking expenses and formulating budgets; unfortunately these features disappeared when Spire Online became BLAZE Online. There is no logic to a situation where a much larger entity (Spire) allows a smaller group (Hi-Way) to join them, but then the MAJORITY of members (i.e. Spire's) MUST CHANGE account nomenclature and Online services. read more

Ever since Spire became (Blaze) they no longer answer the phone, the new app is absolutely horrible compared to the last Blaze app. You're now sitting on hold for multiple hours in a day. Worst credit union possible. Spend another 1/2 hour again by going through the Drive Through to deposit a check. Staff are very incompetent and poorly trained. Very unskilled white guy with an accent needed me to repeatedly say and spell my 3 letter first name. He could not find my account so he began demanding much personal information. I would think that my information and the small deposit of a check does not require the teller to begin to speak to me as if I am a criminal, demanding private info that is not required. This is the second time in 2 weeks that the teller was unable to find my account, or have any basic skills to find it (teller next to him quickly found the account) or professional skills to not treat the customer as dangerous because he can not perform his job. Last week, the teller did not return my Spire card (acting like I did something wrong as Spire was name on card and not Blaze) so I could not present that to prove that I am not a criminal. Really? I was forced to become a Spire CU member when my CU of 15 years merged with Spire. I was told today that I cannot make a loan payment over the phone w/o being 15 days past due and it also costs $15 to do so. I then said I would pay online but it takes 3 days to process the registration and she also wouldn't give me my new account and loan information "for my security" after she just made me verify my SSN! She said I would have to drive my butt to a branch to get my account information and make my payment. WTF is it 1992?? It's like they don't want me to pay my loan payment! I've been a SCU for a few years. And every time I have to deal with them it makes me want to switch. Whether it's the ATMs or the service over the phone. It seems like it's always a hassle instead of it being convenient. Now it's not all like this, some branches and some people are extremely helpful. But man those bad Apple sure do ruin the bunch. I have been unhappy with them for years. It started a few years ago when Target had a Black Friday mishap - no fraud on my card but they sent me an email on Friday afternoon cancelling my card - no call - I found out that evening when I was checking out at the grocery store they cancelled my card. I had to make a special trip to the bank Saturday morning to get cash because I had no access to money for gas, groceries, etc with my check card being cancelled. When I called to complain they said they sent an email (I don't check my private email at work). They apologized but it was just lip service. Next thing was when I closed my Safety Deposit Box - They had my box in the very bottom next to the wall - so hard to get the box out and it was heavy. They said they couldn't move me. It was when I closed on a home I moved the majority of my money and service away from Spire; I keep some money there as a back up savings. When Spire updated the online banking and I could not log in but could ONLY get a hold of them during banking hours if you have a problem (bad news when you are doing online banking on a Saturday or Sunday). Now this morning - same thing, problem with their new online banking system - locked out and no way to have it fixed until they come into work. Lucky it was not a holiday. SOOOOO unhappy but they don't care, I am just one person!!!!!!! read more

I use to love Spire. But after the last two days i would tell people to go somewhere else. I had some trouble with my account and i called to try and have resolved. I was told if i brought my account positive everything would be fine. When i went in to the bank i was told something completely different. Then to call the same person i talk to the day before to be something completely different than what i was told the day before. Also was extremely rude and refused to give her name when I asked for it. I wasn't trying to get her in trouble I just wanted to be able to tell the person i talked to who i talked to the day before. I really like this bank. And have not had any issues up until a day ago . i just did not like the way i was talked too. read more

I have been a loyal member of my credit union since the 1980s (NOTE: It's NOT Spire). I love my credit union because I am always treated like a human being rather than a number and everybody is always helpful and really courteous. Once again: NOT Spire. I've also banked with my credit union for years remotely through the AMAZING share branch network. I even once joined a different credit union for my business banking account since I do not like commercial banks and those credit union employees were always really nice -- and my credit union does not do business accounts. Unfortunately, I had to move back to Minneapolis due to a devastating injury and subsequently, the death of my mother, and have been trying continue doing my banking with my credit union via the drive through tellers at a couple of different credit unions. For some reason, I would always get the same teller who would speak at a breakneck speed and whenever I would ask him to please repeat what he said more slowly since I couldn't understand what he said, he snottily repeat what he said, YELLING it at me. Asking someone to speak more slowly is not saying that you are hearing impaired. And even if I was, why would this guy not have more compassion and patience? God forbid that someone old, slow, and hard of hearing should try to do business with them. Eventually, I had to ask the guy so many times that he would not greet me or say thank you at the end of transactions. I could hear him being really kind and friendly with other customers. Either they really do not like share branch business (In which case they should drop the network), or the guy was taking it really personally that I asked him to repeat what he said. Honestly though, I have no idea what the problem was. I would expect this sort of passive-aggressive behavior in San Francisco, but this is the first I have experienced it in my beloved Minneapolis! The final nail in the coffin was when I went to go deposit a check so I could pay my rent on a place I just signed the lease for. I had misplace my wallet, but happened to find a scanned copy of my driver's license. I went there, knowing that they had seen me many, many times and would KNOW me. Besides, I wasn't asking for cash back, or anything else. Simply making a deposit. ANYONE can make a DEPOSIT to your account, correct? The point of doing a hard core verification of ID seems to me to be to keep other from WITHDRAWING funds. Right? Turns out the same guy who had waited on me every time very coldly refused to deposit my check. I asked to speak to the manager, who also very coldly refused. Even though they KNEW me and had seen my license many times! I was nearly in tears because I had left work to go make the deposit and this meant I needed to take the rest of the day off to go drive to another CU in the norther suburbs before they closed. Very rude, cold people -- "friendly" on the surface but totally lacking in the qualities I have experienced at other credit unions. Something is definitely wrong here. I am going to eventually have to open a local credit union account and it will DEFINITELY NOT be Spire. I've been a member here for 2 or 3 years, and I consistently have a good experience with them. Now that they have the mobile deposit it is even better. I mostly use mobile deposit and free ATM at Kwik Trip by my house. Frankly, their Eden Prairie location is not that convenient, but with mobile deposit, atms and shared branching, I can get all my banking done really easily. I've also using their personal line of credit. It is easy and cheap to use. Credit Union are almost always better than banks. read more

Meh, real estate agent here who had a client go with their lending department and I'm not sure they knew what exactly was going on. Instead of choosing a loan officer and working with them the entire transaction, it seems there was a committee of them. Communication was poor and the transaction didn't close on time. Be careful when selecting a loan officer, make sure they are experienced. read more

I took out a car loan with People's Community Credit which was acquired by Spire. Since Spire took over, I've had a very negative experience. The web site lacks basic loan information such as pay off amount and payment schedules. Spire added themselves as a second mortgagee on my home loan without my knowledge, even though they had the title to the car as equity and I made a substantial down payment. The loan was secure and there was no reason to do this. When I called to speak with someone as this potentially effected my credit rating and my homeowners insurance rates, no one is ever available who can help me and they will not return my call. Poor service and questionable business practices - stay away there are better credit unions. read more

I've been a member at this credit union for about 8 months and have had a great experience throughout. The young man who helped my husband and I set up our account was kind, thorough, and answered all of our questions. We recently were out of town for a week and had a few small purchases overdraw our account; when I went in today, Morgan was very helpful and reversed all overdraft charges with my deposit. Would recommend this CU to anyone, as it was highly recommended to me. read more

Called and asked about a boat loan, they claimed that as long as the boats worth was equivalent too or lesser than the cost the boat would not be a big deal. Had my credit pulled and checked, they said the boat was "too old"and offered other options (%12) interest rate. ATV loan is through them as well, whomever is in charge of Insurance is not up to-date, have been harrassed 3 times over extra charges for "not having full coverage " which has been given each time upon request. If you plan on emailing, expect 2-3 week wait time. read more

A horrible experience with Spire Federal Credit Union's mortgage department. No communication from mortgage representatives, additional requirements for installation of a radon mitigation system and testing only 5 days before closing. Very poor customer service and nothing but problems with Spire Federal Credit Union's mortgage department. We have been Spire customers for years and have had several mortgages with them. After this experience we are closing all of our accounts Spire and will not do business with Spire Federal Credit Union again. read more

I was in Spire a couple of days ago, and noticed they had advertisements of getting 25% off Nationwide Insurance for Spire members. I went home and looked at well established/trusted consumer reviews for Nationwide, and found them to have a 80% dissatisfaction rating by their customers. Mostly, for not paying customer claims, or ripping off their customers one way or the other. Other posts rated them among the worst insurance company. Shame on Spire for not caring to check consumer experiences on these scammers (or overlooking it), and introducing trusting customers to this very poor outfit. Spire gives your name out to a 3rd party accident/life insurance company . They offer policies that on the surface, seem inexpensive. I took the bait. However, this month when my quarterly premium came due, I thought I would check their reviews again. They have 33 complaints with the BBB, and are on several complaint boards for NOT paying on their policies after death, or dragging payment out many months. In their fine print, is the permission to (get this) DO THEIR OWN AUTOPSY) on you. I dropped the policy and saved my $72. Spire has now fooled me twice....so I guess it is shame on ME! read more

I have belonged to Spire for at least ten years. Recently, I went to my local branch to see if I could apply for a credit card because I was interested in lower interest rates. I had $10,000 at their bank but I was on disability so I didn't have too much money coming in. Nevertheless, I was still able to live on my income. Anyway, I went through their process to apply for a credit card with Spire...but no. My income vs. my rent made me ineligible. It didn't matter that I was responsible with my money and was a longtime customer of Spire (even though they didn't provide much banking service in Minneapolis). I asked to speak to the manager to see if he could help me. He stopped to talk to me on his way ot the door. I said how about a cc for $500? He said no, there was nothing like that. He told me I didn't make enough money to qualify for their credit cards too AND he laughed at me and said "How's that debit card working out for you?" He was as rude as they come. The warm and fuzzy image that Spire likes to portray is not true. There is no such thing as a warm and fuzzy bank. read more

Been a member of this Credit Union LONG before it was Spire (1980's), and it has continued to get progressively worse. We have both business and personal accounts with them, and I have to laugh every time I see their commercials touting their service and commitment to their customer. I beg to differ. But, it was convenient to the business so we grinned and bared it, even after our latest attempt (in 2019) to get a home equity line of credit with them (for only about 25% of our current equity) was met with an inquisition that would have made Russia proud. We had a HELOC with Spire for ten years, and never were late or missed a payment. Frankly, we were not treated like we were long-tenured members with great credit who are in good standing in all our financial affairs, but like new customers with shady credit. It was shocking. We went elsewhere and EASILY and conveniently received that new HELOC with less than 1/2 of the 'proof' or paperwork that Spire threw at us. But the last straw has to be their recent 'upgrade' to their digital banking website. It is one thing to roll out this type of upgrade right before the 15th (I think most people have bills due on both the 1st and 15th), forcing us to make other arrangements, but now he we are facing the 1st and I still can't pay a personal or business bill through bill-pay (just tried), a feature we have used for years. Changing banks is a hassle, but we feel we have no choice. This place has let us down one too many times. read more

I have been a Account holder with this outfit (and its predecessors) since my first professional job over 40 years ago. In the past year I have had multiple issues with them. My business requires I travel and am out of the state for lengthy periods of time. I also have other bank accounts in other states I do business in so have the opportunity to compare services. Spire in my experience has performed rather poorly in comparison. My current issue (I call it the last straw) is, after their mobile deposit process declined my deposit, I called the number in the email. I was put on hold for 1/2 hour. After a very pleasant woman finally answered I told her my issue and she put me back on hold. When she returned a few minutes latter she said she had to call someone on this issue and would call me back. I guess I should have asked what day she planned to call me back since a full business day later I have yet to hear from anyone. Not sure what my next attempt will bring but my mood has been soured. read more

To say my experience since my credit union merged with Spire has unpleasant would be a large understatement. Literally everything I have asked from them since I involuntarily became a member has been declined. I originally was a member of the Greater Minnesota Credit Union or GMCU and technically I have been for about 15 years now. The Isle branch was always pleasant to deal with. They knew my by name, loan approvals were so fast I could sit with the loan officer and have an immediate answer and it was always approved. That all changed after the merge. My first negative experience came after the merge I asked for a small personal loan for my racing team. I was told my credit was too bad to be approved for such a loan. I retorted even though I've been a member for 10 years and never defaulted on any loan I've had with them? She told me the terms have changed and that's just how it was. To be fair my credit at this point was not great so I moved on. The second strike was when the tried to charge me $132 in overdraft fees on four vending machine purchases, the four purchases didn't even total $8. I was confused how I was even able to use the card four times if I did not have sufficient funds. I asked them to remove the fees as it was absolutely ridiculous to charge me 16 times more than what the total amount was. At first she basically told me I was SOL so I said I would be removing all my money and closing all my accounts, she then removed half of the fees and still made me pay the other half. I was not pleased but figured it was better than nothing. I've asked about home or construction loans and they jut simply said they do not do them and offered to alternative solutions or direction what else I could do. I applied again for a personal loan after my credit score had been rebuilt but this time they came up with the excuse my income did not support the loan. Funny I was JUST approved this summer for a $250,000 home loan on my wages alone. This was after a week went by, after I was told I'd have an answer in a couple of hours, with not so much as a phone call. After a week I called and asked how long does it normally take? I was again told it should have only taken a day at most and I explained it's been a week and I've heard nothing. The guy on the phone was a total prick, rude and short from the start. He said someone tried reaching me but I have zero phone calls and zero voicemails. He again basically said that's the way it is, didn't offer any alternative solutions, didn't take the time to explain anything. I said it sounds like I need to find a new bank and he said that's your decision as if to say we don't need you or value you. Go figure AFTER I call a week later I get a letter 3 days later. It certainly doesn't take a week and a half to get mail in the same state. The way this man treated me I feel is a direct reflection of how Spire operates as a whole. Asshole demeanor, rude, short, lazy and impersonal. I should also add that credit inquiry dropped my credit score 31 points in a single day. I did talk to two ladies in the Princeton branch who were absolutely delightful to work with and offered a solution, was told I'd hear back the following Monday (this was a Friday) but a week later and again still nothing. She mentioned I didn't have any established credit which again was bogus since I already had two truck loans and at least one personal loan with GMCU. Apparently after the merge these record have disappeared? So I emailed Spire to ask them to remove their hard inquiries from my credit report. One is set to expire in 6 months but I asked if they could expedite the process. The second I asked to remove because, one they denied the loan so why keep it on my record and two, they have literally done nothing else for me I think the least they could do is this. After a few emails I was told it was passed onto the person who oversaw the loan application and would hear back shortly. After 24 hours of no response I emailed again asking how long it would be, still no response. Noticing a trend here? After I receive an answer I will be withdrawing all of my money and closing all my accounts. Why would I continue to bank with a credit union who does nothing for me? I would highly recommend Affinity or Minnco over Spire to anyone looking for a credit union. Loyalty is something I strongly value and after 15 years it's clear there is zero loyalty at Spire. read more

I have been a member since 1990. Over the years, loan rates have been good and the service at the counter very warm and helpful. I have always had an issue with the overall lack of convenience: very few walk in locations, and few electronic banking tools. i was fine with that, cause the banking costs (service fees, loan rates) for me were low. HOWEVER... In the last year I have experienced nothing but headaches with the online tools and (worse yet) the people working at the new shiney MG location have been rude and (EVEN WORSE YET) incompetent. read more

When I opened the accounts, they communicated a lot of different options and what they would mean for me. They have excellent loan options, although I have never actually applied. Have been a member of this credit union for 25 years. Had a car loan two years ago with no issues. I am a retired person collecting social security and have a part time job. This credit union approved me to get a car loan again. Went through hours of finding a car and actually preparing everything at the bank. Then the next day they called and decided to tell me they change there minds and will not help me. What kind of credit union does not help there members? I will be leaving this place because I was able to find another credit union who approved me right away with no issues. If I could give them a zero rating I would. Horrible customer service. Would not help a long time customer and a customer that paid off previous loans on time never late. read more

My husband added me to his spire checking account in 2008 when we got married so we would have a joint account. I have never felt like Spire had great customer service and have wanted to switch to a different bank or credit union that met our needs better. The nearest branch to us is about 30 miles away from where we live so right there that is kind of annoying in my opinion. We previously took our a car long like probably like 8 years ago or so and I wouldn't say it was fabulous by any means even though they are supposed to be "the best" for car loans. We paid the car loan off early. So yesterday, I went to purchase a car and I mentioned to the dealership that we bank with Spire. They were able pull their rates and I was pre-approved for a car loan. The dealership thought we would get a lower rate than 4.0 since I am also on my husbands spire credit card account as well. Today though, the dealership called me after speaking with spire and said that spire was not going to honor the loan, repayment length of the loan, or the interest rate that I was approved for. They said that I would need to open up my own individual spire account and that I couldn't "piggy bank" off of my husbands accounts (even though it is a joint checking account and has been for 10 years). My car loan was less than 15k so they shortened the repayment length by a year and gave me a higher interest rate. I can honestly say I am so disappointed. For a business that is supposed to be focused on the customer first, I just don't get it or understand. I was able to get a better rate with a different bank and a loan period length that I had originally planned on. This whole experience is just another reason why I am not impressed and quite frankly won't recommend Spire to others. read more

If there were a "0" rating, I'd select that. This is the worst credit union I have ever done business with. I've had an auto loan with Spire for the last three years that is automatically paid from my checking account. Spire doubled my monthly payment because I didn't respond to mail that was sent to my old PO Box number however, there's no PO Box on my Spire account. Now they told me that I need to fill out a change address form and have it notarized and mail it to Spire. I live no where near a Spire Credit Union. Oh and also, I have to pay all of the late fees because they sent mail to the wrong address. These credit unions are making a lot of money by charging late fees and not delivering mail to the correct address on the account. read more

Three times you're out. I've never had trouble buying products, but three times now when they needed servicing, I submitted all documents (everything is still paper) with ample time for them to process, and it simply wasn't done. I've got six hours of rigmarole clocked dealing with Spire errors, specifically "lost" signed documents. Though their online banking is adequate, it's not nearly as convenient as commercial banks, and occasionally is frustrating. Transactions often take days to process, the same ones my bank processes immediately. As much as I want to promote the co-op business model, with Spire it's too costly time-wise, and frankly, risky. They're chatty, but when it gets down to doing the business of banking, they bumble. Good intentions only carry you so far. Yes, it's nice to be treated like a person, but when it comes to money, I'd rather be treated like a carefully handled number. read more

WATCH OUT! If you think you are banking with the good guys- SPIRE is more greedy and predatory than Wells Fargo or TCF! Might as well bank with one of the national chains- at least they are convenient and don't try to be something they are not. My experience: SPIRE charges their courtesy pay (or NSF) fees based on the available balance and not the actual balance. I was recently charged $175 in fees for 5 small debit card charges totaling $61.56- when my actual balance was $91.58. All of these posted on 6/28 - the same date as my direct deposit went in. They used the available balance (the holds(that may or may not go through at a later date) to determine whether to charge the fee. How is it legal for them to charge me $175.00 in fees when they never actually extended ANY credit on my behalf???? If they can use the holds to determine fees, when the actual transaction posts, don't they need to release the hold from your available balance first, otherwise they are counting it twice for the purposes of charging a fee. This has happened many times before- hundreds of dollars over the last 2 years. They are taking advantage of the people with little money to spare. read more

I met with one of their investment counselors who convinced me to put money into an annuity. When I got the policy/contract there were clauses in there never told to be by the counselor, that I did not agree with--such as tying up my money until I was 101 yrs. old! Under my legal right to cancel "under the 30-day free-look policy, I contacted the counselor and told him I was cancelling and wanted my money refunded. He said he would take care of it. 9 months went on with excuses. Finally I called the insurance company direct and they said he never submitted the cancellation paperwork. He obviously was thinking about his big commission vs. his legal fiduciary responsibilities! I contacted the Spire President, Dan Stoltz, about this fraud but he ignored me. Currently, Spire is facing punitive action from the Mn. Dpt. of Commerce + FINRA for this fraud. Stay away from them--I have had 9 months of heartache with this matter. read more
