I really, really want to give a good review to "Spinning Chairs" but I can't.
The people who work there seem like kind, hardworking folks, and it is obviously a very new business. When you walk in, there is spare decor and unfinished walls towards the back. The bathroom is barely functioning and doesn't even have a mirror. So I'd like to think that my experience is due to the newness of the establishment... but things that I experienced can't be written off to just that.
I walked by today and had planned on going somewhere else to get some stuff done, but I thought, why not give a new place a try? I brought up their website to see how much a beard shaping or trim would be and it said $20 - a decent price. The website also advertised that if you pay online, you receive $5 off of your services.
I walked in and there were two men at the barber chairs. One was already working on a client but the other was free. I inquired about the $5 discount and I was told that to qualify you have to pay online several hours in advance, but since I was a new customer they would make an exception; very generous.
I told them that I wanted to get my beard - about 2 months of growth - shaped into mutton chops with a mustache. This is where warning bells started to go off, as they both looked at me like they had no idea what I was talking about. I reiterated that I wanted mutton chops, and made a gesture on the sides of my face to indicate what I was talking about. One of the men - the one already with a client - seemed to understand, but the other still looked puzzled. They communicated about it and then the second man seemed to understand, but I was wary. Mutton chops are a well known beard style, and for employees at a barber shop to not immediately know what I was talking about took me aback.
I asked the man who was to be my stylist if he really knew what I was talking about and had done them before, and he assured me he did/had, so I took a seat and he began to work. As he was doing the work, I felt him trimming around my chin area, and I thought that was odd since that area gets completed shaven for mutton chops. I thought, perhaps he is just evening out all of the hair to one length and will then shave that are away, so I sat patiently. He ended up pulling out a straight razor which surprised me. I've never had a straight razor shave where the chair stayed upright; it's always tilted back.
After 15-20 minutes of work, I felt him move back to my chin area, and I had to say something. I said "I'm sorry, I don't mean to interrupt, but it seems like you're leaving hair on my chin." "Oh did you want me to take off more?" he said, at which point I asked to look in the mirror. He had basically left me with a full beard - admittedly trimmed and shaped well, but not mutton chops. In addition he had shaved down the inside cheek area, meaning it would now be completely impossible to do a traditional mutton chop.
I asked him what was going on and why he wasn't shaving my chin, and it was clear that from the get go he had NO IDEA what a mutton chop was. His co-worker had to explain to to him again, and eventually they 'got there' when he exclaimed 'Oh, like Wolverine!'.
He then went back in and did the best with what was left to work with, and I ended up with a very low, very non-traditional looking mutton chop that I'm honestly not very happy with, but by the time it became clear he had no idea what he was doing it was too late.
In addition to everything, HE CUT ME TWICE - BLEEDING CUTS, and where he DID shave with the straight razor it was left looking patchy.
I paid anyway because I'm a chump and I just don't like confrontation, but I will never go back here, and I have to leave with the conclusion that the stylists/barbers on staff are not very well trained or skilled. As much as I wish I could support a new business, between pretending to know (but not knowing) a very common beard style and then cutting me, I cannot advise ever coming here. read more
