This was the first time I actually dined at a place using Yelp on the fly in Coogee. Usually the places we went to were recommended by friends or have already been researched before heading over.
As we were not familiar with Coogee and the dining options, in comes Yelp for ideas on where to dine. Spice Thai Cuisine has great reviews and so that was it.
It looked promising and it got filled up very quickly. The place is smallish and you do get very close to other diners, but no matter, the food is key.
We ordered some dishes to share - tom yum soup (seafood), red curry duck, basil chicken stir fry and crying tiger (grilled beef).
The food was relatively good (you cannot compare it to the actual Thai food in Thailand) and tasty. I liked the red curry duck which was interesting as there were lychees in it. It gave a sweetness to the curry which was not very spicy (to those who can take the heat). The curry was heaven on rice.
The tom yum soup was ok, would be better if there were more herbs and spices in there like lemongrass, galangal and kaffir lime leaves.
The basil chicken was not too bad though I guess I would prefer minced chicken and not chicken slices. There was no wok hei (fragrant smoke from frying in a wok under high heat) smell or taste in the dish.
The crying tiger (grilled beef) was recommended by my aunt. It was something new to me and I couldn't say I am a fan. The beef was a bit tough and not tender as expected from a wagyu beef. Or maybe I had it all wrong and it was not wagyu beef after all. Still, it was not my favorite dish that night.
