I booked a trip to Salem with a group of my high school friends and we had a blast. The Salem Voodoo, Vampires, and Ghosts Guided Walking Tour ended up being one of several highlights on the trip. The guide was incredibly knowledgeable and was a fascinating story teller. We ended up goofing on the timing and were already 30 minutes late before we joined the tour. As we walked to the next location, he caught us up on what he already went over and it was really nice of him to do. We did another tour the night before with a larger group and I wish we had done this tour with everyone because unfortunately the other tour we went on was blown out of the water by this one. The sites were unique and the stories were not ones that we had already heard of as part of other tours. As we walked, he also gave recommendations of food places or little shops and museums that he recommended which was an unexpected and nice touch. We booked the "Voodoo, Vampires and Ghosts Walking Tour" and it was a great experience! Our guide Dr. Vitka "Mike" is a gifted and exceptional story teller. His expertise in the history of the events around the Salem Witch Trials, his knowledge of the area and his experience as a ghost hunter and researcher make his story telling a captivating experience as he walks you around. His delivery was also excellent - from his voice projection ( he spoke loud enough for us all to hear him even with all the noise around town but without shouting) to his tone of voice which had a slight "ghoulish" ring to it. We passed other tours walking around as well and although the other guides seemed knowledgeable, they don't tell the stories anything like Mike did. And he even dressed the part in all- black outfit complete with vest, top hat that has some witchcraft looking bones on it and holding a sort of walking stick with a skull on it. I really enjoyed the combination of historical stories (accurate to Salem's history) along with spooky embellishment (that's why you take a tour like this!). The pics at the end scared my 12 year old for hours, but she still enjoyed the tour. If you have young children, beware some of the stories are verbally told with some graphic language and the pictures were also creepy. I would recommend taking it at night if you want to enhance the spooky factor and the afternoon to diminish it. It was well worth the price. read more

I've been on a lot of ghost tours and I know that some are better than others. I know not to go expecting to see a ghost or to even get scared. That said, this was the worst ghost tour I have ever been on, and it had nothing to do with not seeing any ghosts. In my opinion a good ghost tour, should be like a mini tour of the macabre parts of a city. You should learn a bit of history, hear some urban legends, and have maybe a laugh or two. It might be cheesy, but if you're up for it and you're a good sport, you're gonna have a good time. On this tour, sadly, you will hear about how they were featured on A&E, how the owner has years of experience, see some photographic evidence, and then get drug around to some cool spots, only to hear things like "wow, we were here once and this raccoon scared the beejesus out of a woman." I would think that a place like Salem, with it's long history, wonderful architecture, and spooky spots must have a good ghost tale or two to tell, but if there are any, we didn't hear them. We weren't told any yarns of murder or betrayal (not even about witches!), instead we were told about where photos were taken, where things were heard, but never who or what might have said or been seen. Sure it's scary to hear a voice in a graveyard, but can't you have some history or speculation on who it might be doing the spooking? It sure gets tired after the third stop of "something scary once happened to our tour guide here," without a spooky story to couple with it. I was shocked to hear that the owner had spent some time in New Orleans before opening her tours here. New Orleans is a town that knows how to do this kind of tour right... I think the owner might want to go back and take some notes. read more

I have reviewed my trip to Salem, MA on another website and friends suggested I put them on yelp, so not to disappoint, I am putting some of them here. When we came to Salem for Halloween, we were only there to do Halloween, we decided, screw the historic stuff, we could do that any other time of the year. We did 31 haunted houses, 2 night walking tours on the same night (nice for comparing), a boat tour and countless little side trips and food excursions. The advantage of the walking tours side by side was being able to see the difference in quality. The Spellbound tour was our first one, and it was $13 per person. It was great, out guide had a great personality and had the groups attention the whole time and he was able to keep things moving and lively. I don't think anybody going on these tours really expects to see any horror shows, yet I see in reviews people are disappointed they weren't smacked in the head by a vampire bat. The guide weaved in the witch stories, as well as the stories about the history of the people of the town, such as the streets in the Monopoly game and the history of the Parker brothers. Now, fast forward to our next walking tour that was included in our Hysteria Pass combo ticket, $13, which made the tour really cheap. We were in the last group to go out. The guide on that tour was snippy and told us no pictures at all, which was totally opposite of spellbound, the guide would stop so everyone could take pictures. I'd spend the money and take this tour. read more

Ghosts AND Vampires? DAYUM! Most tours just do the ghosts. . I don't think I've ever been on a Vamp tour, I gotta get in on this! I've done a ton of Salem ghost tours, and I don't go to hear the story of Giles Cory (though I know we'll hear it anyway), I go for the other stuff that they do. . . the stuff that sets them apart from the other guys down the street. Yeah, you'll go by the site of the old prison, you'll be told "that's where the old guy was pressed to death", "this church [by the mall] is super haunted because part of it is build over old graves that now stand in front)" although interestingly enough you'll hear slightly different version in each tour. But I digress. Ok, the upsides: The Vampire ending was really interesting, though not really tied into salem the way I was expecting. A trip to a graveyard I'd never been to including some interesting grave robbing stories. The historically accurate street names The "see that Ben And Jerry's that's where the original courthouse where everyone was tried once stood" types of tour stops. I really thought it gave a great idea of how the town was once set up and an eerie feeling knowing that I was standing where a condemned witch was once paraded towards the gallows. The downsides: A sadly strange tour route that retraced itself at one point A lot of stories about how several years ago this guy saw this thing and this woman tasted an apple (why do people NEVER experience this stuff on my tour. . or even a week ago?) A quick rant about skeptics (personally, I think while looking at pictures supposedly of paranormal phenomenon skepticism should be the defacto response, otherwise those specks of dust on your lens turn into ghastly orbs. . a story you will undoubtedly tell everyone and eventually embarrass yourself) All in all it was, not the best I've been on, not the worst. I learned quite a bit, had fun, and it made enough of an impression that I remembered to yelp it. read more

I suppose there isn't a ghost tour around that's not cheesy, right? That being said, the "Vampire & Ghost Tour" I took this weekend lived up to that assumption! We were told that there are nightly paranormal sightings, both to the naked eye and caught on digital camera. (They probably say that every tour, right?) We all *really* wanted to see something...but trust me, we weren't expecting to... Overall, it was a fun Halloween thing to do, and Salem is a really cool town. The tour was at least interesting, if nothing else. Lots of stories and folklore of the history of Salem. If you go in October, you MUST pre-order tickets (around $13) or you'll never get on a tour. Our group alone must have had about 40 people in it, which is partly why I think it lacked in "authenticity". There were just too many people and too many camera flashes going off -- You would've thought the paparazzi was there, seriously! We pre-registered for this tour months in advance online before our trip to MA. We bought the package tickets which included tickets to the museum, tour and vampire tour. When we met the tour guide we found out that there was no longer a museum. The tour guide was understanding and gave us a cash refund for the museum part on the spot. The tour guide was informative and kept it interesting. We stopped at some key points around Salem. She gave us a lot of additional info on sites and history that we did not know. He was incredibly knowledgeable on his facts and gave a fantastic presentation. This guy is quite the character, he was on point with everything he was talking about, and easily kept the attention of our group with other tour groups passing by us he by far was the best. Unlike the other guides we observed he didn't need an obnoxious mic or superficial thrills to keep the group engaged. He just told us great stories about each location in his own theatrical way. I decided to go onto this tour. Overall I have to say I enjoyed it. However, after paying 13.00 a ticket I would assume that some of that money could go towards getting new ones instead of reusing the ones from previous tours. (It's called VistaPrint, get some of the free business cards and just pay the shipping.) My tour guide, Jackie, was very witty and funny. She took us to key points around Salem and told us some interesting haunts about the places. The tour was fast paced and lots of facts. It wasn't drown out where the guide would just talk and talk and talk and talk... You get the point. If anyone wants to really want to go onto a tour where your guide just talks, go onto the one where the guides husband goes with her and has to wear ear muffs because he can't even stand her voice. (And NO you don't see that with Spellbound Tours.) read more

However They do a great job of intertwining both the history of Salem and the paranormal. I must stress if your looking for a tour to dive deep into the history of Salem this is not the tour for you. Great tour of the places you won't find on other tours! If you're looking to hit the places you can find easily on a map (witch house, witch museum, etc.), go elsewhere. If you want real stories that'll chill you and make you think about the true history/present of Salem, do this tour! Our tour guide was so great and knowledgeable. I'm a true skeptic, so I take everything with a grain of salt, but these stories, the truth behind them, the myth behind them, and what people truly believe to occur because of them are all fascinating. My girlfriend and I finished our Salem experience with this night walking tour! It was a lot of fun and very informative! It was amazing to see all of the sites in Salem we haves learned about as children, although it is told in a much more frightening manner. Our guide, Dr. Vitka I think his name was, did a phenomenal job. I loved that he was once a skeptic and after an experience on a different job, became an investigator and researcher. I typically don't scare easily so I wouldn't say it was too frightening, but the pictures they show at the end could frighten some people. BUT HEY! you are in Salem, right? After 4 years of begging, we finally made it to Salem with our daughters to learn about the witch trials, and our visit would not be complete without a ghost tour. Dr. Vikta was entertaining with great intonation, making the tales that much more exciting. While we didn't feel any hands on our shoulders or chills up our spines, we knew we picked the right tour to go on. Passing other groups along the streets of Salem, we noted that you couldn't hear their guides speak, nor did they go the extra mile to look the part. I loved the tour! I took the tour two nights ago and it was awesome! The tour guide was a great story teller, never a dull moment. And that night it was a little windy and slight drizzle to add some mystery and drama as our group walked through the town. The guide was super cool and allowed my husband, my mother and I to join the group last minute before starting the next tour. I was mortified because I didn't have cash to pay for the tour so he allowed me to pay online for our three tickets and continue on the tour without skipping a beat. Loved the tour guide and his approach to haunted Salem - he knows how to set the scene! Only disappointment was that I was under the impression we would be using paranormal equipment such as an EMF detector because that's what the tour guide had said the day before the tour. Would recommend if you want an interesting night out. Don't bring your kids though. Not sure why parents would bring their young children to something like this but you could tell it was too much for the poor kids...one even left the tour early lol. read more

This is the classic bait and switch. Mollie will sell you the ticket then when the tour comes around she has some no name guide do the actual tour. Quite disappointing. Also the short time she greets the guests before the tour she reeked of booze and stumbled a bit while clearly sluring some of her words. As for the tour itself, average. Some of the info was inaccurate as I discovered later on. And nothing was covered that the other ghost tours in town give. In fact this tour is ALL the well traveled places unlike the out of the way places I went to when I did the Salem Night Tour. The SNT was far more interesting... and the owner didn't seem drunk. read more

Awful. My husband and I had taken a different tour with a different company the week before. We had out of town guests and suggested we all go up to Salem again... Seven of us drove 2 1/2 hours to see the sites and take a tour. Our tour guide was Ashley a young college student. Having the tour the weekend prior set the bar for our expectations, maybe to high. Ashley used the words UM and STUFF like it was going out of style. She allowed other people who were not on our tour to stand in front of other paying customers. Never asking them to move on or move to the side. DO NOT USE ASHLEY. Sweet girl. But I want a knowledgable guide who can answer questions and tell a good story. I actually reminded her to discuss a particular grave being from an original Mayflower descendant. I don't really blame her, it's the owner who should be scolded for poor business practices. We spent a lot of money and as she ended the tour early another customer said weren't you going to show us where Giles Corey was crushed? She was like oh ya ok, let's do that. We all kind of chuckled how young and knowingly unprofessional she was as a tour guide. read more
