On my way from…read moreChicago to St Louis to visit family to Thanksgiving, my car broke down a couple of miles from here. After researching a couple of repair places and calling a tow truck, I chose Stevenson and their solid reviews as my destination. They did not disappoint. We arrived at just before noon (when their technicians take an hour lunch break). The woman at the desk was friendly, sympathetic, and informative. Bill, the owner, took the car in immediately and quickly came out to show me a picture of exactly what the problem was, and how easy (and affordably) it could be solved. He said he should have me on the road by 2pm, so I headed out to get some lunch and wait. I got a call from the shop at 1pm saying that the technician had decided to work through lunch, and I was all set to go. I wasn't even late to my dinner that night. :) I have nothing but compliments for Stevenson Auto Repair and the way they conduct their business. They even sent me a follow-up "thank you for your service" note.

I…read morewas told a few months ago that it needed to be replaced soon, but I noticed there weren't any chain auto shops in the area. I was given a quote over the phone and told it could be done immediately and would take about 30 minutes. After we finished breakfast, my husband and I drove over there. The employees were very friendly and fast. They began work on my car immediately and it was finished within 45 minutes of my arrival. They had coffee and magazines and the locals (obviously employees or regulars) going in and out were entertaining and funny. The price they quoted me was what I paid, AND, it was the same price I was quoted at Pep Boys a couple months earlier. I expected them to be more expensive because it was a smaller business but it wasn't! I would definitely recommend this business and I'd much rather give my money to a family business like this, than a big chain, any day. Five happy stars.

I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt that both of these parts were causing the leak, although I remain a somewhat skeptical. I was charged 1.00 (hours labor) for the pump and 1.40 for the pressure hose. In other words, 2.40 hours to replace both. This is a good example of the dirty little secret that exists in this type of business. Although these separate hourly estimates might be pretty accurate in a "start from scratch" situation, when the two procedures are combined, which they were in my case, the overall job takes considerably less time. It's a blatant overcharge and although not illegal, it is unethical. I will not be returning and cannot recommend this business.
