Lemon pie, Oreo pie, Charleston caramel sea salt ice cream

Cool spot to stop at. I just went for the deserts LOL! I tried their cheese cake, lemon pie, ore pie, coconut pie, and got some ice cream. I strongly recommend the coconut pie or cheese cake with a scoop of Charleston caramel ice cream. The young lady taking orders was very nice and welcoming. Will definitely be back to finish trying out the rest of the pies and the banana split Sunday.

Stopped in for a meal to go. I ordered a HB Steak plate, with baked potato, slaw, and garlic bread. 10 pc wing, Philly Steak, and a Cheeseburger. The food came out quickly, and when I got back to the place I was staying, I cracked open my to go plate, and was met with a delicious looking HB steak with cheese and grilled onions. The potato was good, the slaw was chopped up super fine, just how I like it, and the toast was nice, and garlicky. It has been a long time since I've had a hamburger steak, simple, yet delicious! Everyone else said their food was good as well, and it looked good. I tried a wing, and they were very meaty..just as you'd expect. Overall great place to stop for a quick bite, nothing fancy, but very delicious!!

Convenient , Fast and the Food is Great. Did I say, Great? More importantly I should have said home made. I was in Jonesville for a Funeral this afternoon and the original plan was to drive up from Cornelius and grab lunch. I had a couple of places I wanted to try that were open on Sunday but all of them had sever parking problems where you could not even get in the lot. I did try a Mexican Restaurant that was also on my list but apparently short handed and they could not even seat me even though tables were empty. Drove over to the Elkin side of the River and found Speedy Chef No. 1. Not fancy on the outside but one of the most hospitable restaurants I have been to in awhile. You walk in and study the specials posted at the end or you have a choice of ordering off of a very large menu board posted overhead. When I say large, I also mean expansive. Looking at the Specials which is a meat and two sides, i decided to go with that and I chose Chicken Pie with Okra and Mac and Cheese. It's cafeteria style at this point and you watch them dish it out as you go. Half way down, you pay for your lunch and you are ready to go. At this point, I discovered I did not have my silverware and when I inquired, the patron behind me in line told me it was at the very beginning of the line. She turned around and picked up a set for me. Even though she was not a restaurant employee, a good example of hospitality. Found a set and sat down to enjoy what proved to be a great meal The chicken was great as was the Mac and Cheese. The Okra was a bit under cooked but still good. Tea was very good. All of this and still under $10.00, You can not go wrong. Great place and I will be back.

We were in Elkin today and wanted to try a new place. It seems that a lot of restaurants here are closed on Monday so several places we wanted to try were closed. We saw Speedy Chef was open so we gave it a try. Their sign indicated they are open 7 days a week. I'm guessing they do a lot of carry out business as there were many folks waiting for their orders and the dining room was basically empty. They were featuring several specials so I tried their meatloaf with mashed potatoes and mac and cheese. My husband ordered the Ruben with onion rings. I wasn't a fan of the meat loaf or the potatoes. I may be wrong but the potatoes seemed to be instant potatoes. The taste was fine I just prefer ones with more texture and flavor. I wouldn't order this again. My husband said the Ruben was good. I ate one of the onion rings and thought it was a little too greasy for my liking. Two of the ladies behind the counter were very sweet and helpful. The third lady just didn't seem happy. You need to be aware that they only take cash. However, they said there is an ATM on site. They have a large selection of shakes, ice cream and sundaes. There are a lot of games for the kids...or adults in the dining area and TV screens. I think it would be a good place to take a group. It seems to offer something for everyone.

Greensboro needs one of these, badly, if for no other reason than the Pork Chop Sandwich - a sandwich which puts the famous one at Snappy Lunch to shame. This sandwich (about $4.50) is huge, perfectly breaded, and cooked to order - so some patience is required, it will take more time than the average fast food - but then again, it is way better than fast food - there's a slogan there, I think! This place has been around since the 60's, serves all 3 meals, and has a very broad menu. This restaurant is not connected to the Speedy Chef in Mount Airy, though the menus are somewhat alike, but this restaurant does not serve the famous Ground Steak Sandwich, which is so well known in Mount Airy. The style is fast food, order at the counter, get a number, and it will take a little more time than MickeyD's. We tried the Pork Chop Sandwich (of course), a Hot Dog (double that course), a Cheeseburger with simple add ons of mayo & pickles (we're at 3 courses), French Fries, and a Orange Pineapple Shake (think thick, creamy Dreamsicle). I've already commented on the Pork Chop Sandwich, but am more than willing to comment again - this is a great Southern experience. It is served simply with mayo and coleslaw - but you can experiment, at your own risk - it will be your loss. The Hot Dog is simply outstanding - great chili, decent wiener, good bun. The Cheeseburger was excellent, as well - great Diner style burger. The Orange Pineapple shake was outstanding - loaded with flavor with bits of real pineapple, and thick enough to require the assistance of a spoon. The only down note was the FFs - they sucked! Great place, great food, great choices, great service, and literally, Great Shakes!

Hands down the best place in town. I lived just miles from here growing up and I love their hot dogs and fries and everything else on the menu. If you have never been to Speedy Chef, you are missing out! Desserts are the best. Try the hot fudge sundae!!

After an awesome dinner at another establishment close by, and conversing with locals afterwards, I asked if there was anywhere we could go to get a dessert. It was suggested to go to Speedy Chef. Glad we took their suggestion. We got their "Famous chocolate pie" and a slice of Oreo Pie. We took the slices back to the hotel and chowed down! Both of the slices were delicious! Unfortunately, when getting out of the car I squished them in the bag, BUT it didnt affect the taste and flavor- just the appearance!

What a cool experience! We were out and about exploring the area and when we left Elkin my wife…read moresuggested we stop at Rockford General Store. She has seen several positive reviews over the course of the past several months and had it bookmarked. The drive into Rockford is rural and charming. Upon arriving in Rockford there are a few small businesses and park with the general store being at the center of the very small town. Rockford was founded around 1790 to be the county seat of Surry county. The Surry county seat was later moved to Dobson. The exterior is rustic with vintage signs and a small covered porch which offers a few places to sit and enjoy your meal. We stepped inside and were immediately impressed with the smell coming from the kitchen area, the aroma of hamburgers filled the air. To the left there is a bulk candy area with a variety of offerings including chicken feet gummies, that was a new one for us! The store has a few simple offerings including candles, t-shirts and décor related items. There are also vintage/antique items but they appear to be part of the décor and not for sale. The young lady at the grill was friendly and helpful, the menu consisted of hotdogs, hamburgers, fries, chili, chicken tenders, etc. We asked if the chili had beans and when we were told it did not we quickly made our decisions. My wife chose chili fries without the cheese and added onion. I chose the chili dog with onions. My wife also decided to try one of their apple turnovers which she could see were freshly baked on site. The prices are VERY reasonable! They also offer soda by the can or bottle and feature flavors not normally found. Our food was ready in a timely manner and we decided to eat outside at one of the tables. We opened everything up and it looked delicious. We both really enjoyed the flavor of the chili and thought it tasted great. My wife enjoyed the freshly chopped onion atop the crispy crinkle cut fries as well. I thought the chili dog tasted very yummy too. The hot dog bun seemed fresh baked. It was not a normal hot dog bun. My wife used the restroom and told me that I needed to see the faucet and sink area, which I've taken a video of. Overall, this was a great stop and we will absolutely stop in again when in the area or we may just decide to take another drive out to Rockford. They are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays each week. We also learned they are one of the stops within Surry County for Sonker. We did not try one today but took the brochure which features places within the county that offer this cobbler type dessert which varies by featuring seasonal fruits. It sounds delicious and we are adding this to our future road trip itinerary, www.sonkertrail.org. There is even a Sonker Festival which takes place the first Saturday of October in Mount Airy.

I thought it looked run down and couldn't believe this building is the same building in the Yelp pictures. I just ran a Zillow search for the area to see what properties are for sale in the area because it's so beautiful and here sits the Rockford General Store up for sale $700,000.00 with pictures of the interior and this place is sitting empty. Yelp...please do better. I wasted time and gas getting here.
