Debbie's Snack Bar is my hometown eatery with prices that can't be beat! My husband and I both ate breakfast for less than $15. We stopped by to meet my grandma on the way up 77 North. Turn onto 421 and it's the next exit right across from the gas station. Great place to stop on a road trip, for sure! Came in this little diner for ice cream. They had about 10 flavors of hard ice cream served in either a cup or cone (no sprinkles!). You order at the bar and seat yourself - food/ice cream then served to you. The wait staff was fairly nice. They are not accommodating for parties over 4. One waitress was quite rude about the space the 5 of us were taking up. The ice cream was okay - nothing great. Price is very reasonable and a quick stop off 421. He said this after a woman at the table next to me gave me an unsolicited 5 minute lecture on the history of the place and how much I was going to like it. Another couple nearby nodded enthusiastically in assent of these endorsements. It was actually a little weird. I felt like something of a side show freak being sized up by all the locals not accustomed to seeing someone new. The place is popular to be sure, for I arrived at 1:00 and it was pretty full, and it became even more so over the next hour. I ordered the deluxe (8 ounce) burger and a hot dog all the way. They hand patty fresh beef and clearly state on their menu that it can take 20 minutes to cook your burger. That's fine. What is not fine is that they over cooked it and served it to me dry. It was a nice sized burger, but the taste was just ok. And as I said, it was dry. The hot dog was also just ok. The dog itself was the pink type (so you can get some red food dye to accompany the nitrates and nitrites) and was average in taste. The chili was good but the slaw was forgettable. Crinkle fries were below average--maybe old. Servers were pretty nice and attentive. The price was excellent. The food was just fair. To the man who said "You won't be disappointed"... Service was friendly but the kitchen was soooo slow. We needed a quick breakfast and only had 25 minutes to eat. We all ordered biscuits and gravy thinking it wouldn't require any cooking. Just split the biscuit and cover it with gravy. Done. After waiting for 20 minutes and several updates from the waitress that it was coming soon, we really needed to leave. One last check on the food and it wasn't started yet. They did get us one biscuit and gravy for our son to eat in the car which took them about 30 seconds to make. Not sure why the whole order didn't get out that quick, but the rest of us left without eating. We would have gotten it all to go if it was started but nothing was. Oh well. I got the BLT and buffalo chips (both were spot on) and my spouse got corn dogs and chili cheese fries. Great for kids, great for adults, and so much cheaper than chains around. This is a tiny diner located in an even tinier town; Hamptonville. If you blink, you'll miss both. The outside is very run down looking, but don't let that fool you. I never ate here for the simple fact that it looks scary (not going to lie!). After living here over a year, my husband demanded we go eat there one day. So, we did. To my surprise, I actually enjoyed myself. I felt a little out of place since there seems to be a lot of regulars and they kind of stare at you like "where did you come from?" The servers are friendly and well-known. They like to laugh and joke which means they must like working there. I had lemonade, and while it wasn't freshly squeezed (I think it may have been something along the lines of Country-time powdered lemonade), it was still decent. The food is pretty good. They have a wide variety on their menu for being such a small place. Sadly, I was too full to try one of their homemade desserts. Maybe next time.
