Purchased a car from Speed's Auto Auction in Portland, OR that was listed as "runs and drives." I won the bid and paid immediately. Right away, I noticed the mileage was over 200,000 miles higher than what was listed. The car didn't even make it 10 miles before it died. Turns out it needed a new alternator -- which I paid a mechanic to fix. After that repair, it still didn't make it 75 miles before breaking down again and needing a tow (which I also paid for). Now I'm stuck figuring out how to actually get it to "run and drive" as advertised. This was a huge misrepresentation of the vehicle's condition and mileage. Unless you're a mechanic who can fix everything cheaply yourself, I would strongly recommend avoiding this place. read more

I went to my first Speed's Auto Auction today at the NE Whitaker Way location. It was so pleasant. Very clean, organized and just a real enjoyable experience. I ended up bidding on and winning a sailboat w/ trailer. Paying for it was easy and then when the auction ended I was able to easily back in and pull out the trailer and boat. All of the employees that I interacted with were very nice, congenial and helpful. A 5 star experience. Loved it. read more

First issue: I could not even recognize the vehicle and the lot based on the pictures provided and what I expected. Despite staff insisting the pictures online represented the damage to every side of this vehicle it was downplayed and not at all apparent unless you know what you're looking for. This car has been in multiple accidents and has insane amounts of damage to 3 out of four sides that was not discussed or pictured. Prior to bidding on line I ran a vehicle history report that showed no reported accidents or damage to this vehicle. They misrepresented it entirely! The staff insisted that I was responsible for paying for this vehicle whether I took it or not and blew me off with their basic warranty policy. Under no circumstances was any part of this Vehicles condition properly represented in live auction or pictures. The pictures of the inside show smooth seats and every single one of them is cracked and damaged. Oh yeah and the entire floorboard of the vehicle is soaking wet and there were puddles of water in every cup holder. They must have left the doors or windows open for an extended period of time because we got in to the car with 6 inches of snow in the floorboards. Clearly there had been more weather accumulating inside of it before. This is 100 percent pure avoidable negligence between the time of pictures and live auction to the time of pickup! Second issue: VEHICLE CONTAINED VARIOUS MOLD WITHOUT ANY BIOHAZARD WARNING! It reeks more than anything I've ever smelled! Third issue: Vehicle was advertised as running and driving. The staff had to come jump the battery. Then Vehicle was found to not be running and driving due to major engine issues that became immediately apparent on the ride home. Cold start knock and oil pump going out day of purchase! Fourth issue: Drove 3hrs to pick up a vehicle we purchased the prior day (1/16/24) just for them to tell us that the yard is closed. Yes there was a blizzard, thats why they should have said theyd be closed during auction! Hundreds of dollars in gas, hotel, and food spent on an unexpected overnight stay in Portland. plus the loss of a days wages to make the drive to Speeds Auto Auction 1/17/21. In the end I cannot recommend Speeds Auction as they show increased inability to correctly document, list and sell a vehicle. This vehicle sounded like a gym on their website and on the vehicle history report I personally paid for ahead of time. What was not made clear is that it was not like the Dozen previous Humane Society car donations locally this one was donated somewhere in California and brought back after sitting in an unknown location for over 2 years. I will be seeking legal advice due to lack of response from the owners and Reporting and reviewing this on every possible consumer board. I was 100% scammed and paid two to three times what this car was worth because this Auction Yard intentionally downplayed obvious problems with a vehicle that should have legally been reported before it ever hit the yard. The staff and owners are always willing to talk and to explain the process of auctioning cars and trucks to the general public. The rules are simple and straight forward and easily explained. The most horrible service I have ever witnessed in my life! My daughter went down there with all her paperwork to retrieve a towed car that still hasn't been told why. They refused to give her the car and actually verbally stated they would not because her mom "me" was rude to them. These people are stealing cars off the street and towing them for no reason then trying so hard to keep the cars and say they can't give it to whoever for whatever bull shit reason so they can turn around and sell them in their shitty auction. We already reported to the police. We are trying to get Speed's Auto Auction to reply back and to give the car back. We do have title to prove. Speed's Auto Auction won't help out at all, just wanting 403 dollars. Our roommate should not have to pay 403 dollars to buy it back because she was a victim, and she hasn't given an authorization. Took my car to try and have them sell it for me. After it didn't sell, went to pay the $100 and pick up my car, they LOST THE PLATES. After 2 weeks of not being able to drive my car and not hearing at all from them I had to call them to ask about the plates and the guy on the phone barely apologized and tried to make look like it was muy fault because he said "the plates were expired anyways". Now I have to take a day off from work to go to the DMV, request new plates and while I wait for them to arrive I'll have to uber to work. Worst place to go and do business. read more

I am disgusted with myself for ever going through them. I most certainly will not ever recommend them to anyone. I feel I was ripped off. You think going through an auto auction you're getting a good deal, however; when the good deal goes sour you think oh well that is just luck of the draw. WRONG! I purchased a 99 Ford Taurus Wagon, with 94,000 miles on it. It had some minor repairs that needed attention, no biggie I thought. Little did I know that those minor repairs are leading to a lot of bigger repairs. I have had nothing but bad thing after bad thing go wrong with my car since I bought it from them. I have not even gotten to drive it long due to the issues. I don't care what they say, there is no way a cars water pump, air conditioner pump, and alternator go out after 94,000 miles on it. There's no way both left front and left rear door lock actuators go out at the same time either, unless they took them off and slapped on some bad ones; that would only get me a couple hundred miles down the road, which is exactly what happened. I got a couple hundred miles in when the car started smoking ans those issues above went bad. I spoke with a mechanic who was with Ford for 18 years, and he even said there's no way that all those things could happen, unless there was foul play involved. I know there's nothing I can do about this, so I decided to rate this place with the poorest review ever and hopefully scare some people away from ever going through them. PLEASE PLEASE don't go through the auction. If you do, find a loyal mechanic and get his opinion on the vehicle before you do go through with trying to bid on a car. They give you almost a week to review the cars online to give you an idea of what they have. I don't know that you can go there and look at them personally, but its worth a phone call to check if you can, that way you can be better prepared for what is to happen. I hope you do decide to go somewhere else. I don't have any recommendations. This isn't a ploy to get you to go through somewhere else for someone else's auction., I was just wronged, and feel like this is something I can do to get the point across. First off, the other guy that reviewed and gave 1 star is a dumbass, and you can't blame a company for your lack of knowledge/common sense(aka stupidity). An auction is an auction; it's hit or miss with the cars and your own responsibility to carefully look over any car you're interested in before bidding. I have a dealer's license and buy many cars from Speed's to fix up and resell. FIX, then sell, because they do not fix anything, they just sell. I've gotten some cars that were really good deals and some that I lost money on, but that's the way it works. I buy 10-15 cars a month and have never had a problem with them. Some of the employees are not very friendly, but I can't really blame them because I've heard the steady complaining they have to endure from buyers who didn't know what they're doing. So, if you know how to properly look over a car(basic mechanic skills) or have someone you can bring along who has the know how, this is a great place to buy a cheap car. If you have no car knowledge, stick to a dealership. read more
