They were already fully booked for the rest of the night, and closed for the next two days. I was so disappointed thinking that I won't be and to try it based on all the reviews. Since we were staying around the corner from there. I asked the guy if I can get take out. He did me a favor and was able to accommodate that. I saw a "take away available" sign hidden when I was waiting for my order, so I am pretty sure that they weren't taking take out orders either. We took it back to our Airbnb, and it was so yummy. We got the Munster and the Gratinée. I'm so glad that we were able to try this place during our trip. Thank you so much to the kind staff who was able to accommodate my take out order. Tarte flambée (Flammkuchen in German) is a specialty from Alsace and Lorraine, Saarland and neighboring Palatinate and Baden. The basis of the tarte flambée is a very thinly rolled-out base of bread dough. It was called flambée or tarte flambée because it was just kissed by the flame of the logs (I understood thinly rolled-out dough was used to test the temperature of an oven--if it gets dark, the oven is too hot; if it doesn't get baked enough, the oven is too low). The edges of this "ultra thin-crusted pizza" (my term) was rather crispy and burnt (photo; the oven may have been tad too hot), but it tasted very good with well-seasoned veggies on top. The creamy white cheese sauce was not too thick, but it gave a very nice texture and flavor. Overall, it was a very simple meal with very good taste. Service was rendered by a very happy man--at least he seemed so. He was going from a table to table like busy bee taking care of his customers.

La Romantica is in a nice square with a few other restaurants and on a Monday afternoon, this place was jumping. We got sat outside which was perfect as there was a little stream next to us and we got to people watch. One daughter had a pizza which was tasty, light and thin crust, and the crust went well with olive oil and balsamic. The other had carbonara equally tasty! The missus had some mushroom stuffed ravioli. The picture doesn't do it justice as it's not photogenic but it was incredibly tasty! I had some version of cordon bleu at the recommendation of our awesome server and I destroyed it! As we got ready to leave, it was bathroom time so we went inside. Bathrooms are upstairs and oddly I found it cool to see what looked like incredibly old stairs. Never thought a trip to the bathroom would be cool but the stairs were worn in the middle and made me think of how many people might've walked these stairs. When you're visiting Colmar, stop by Ristorante La Romantica for some deliciousness!

We were happy to stumble on L'Amandine as we walked by St. Martin's church, the beautiful Gothic cathedral in the center of town. The restaurant was big, and we noticed people eating pasta on the patio. It was 5:45 and we decided to take the opportunity to stuff the children with easy carbs. The interior was spacious, and we were able to walk in and grab a cozy table towards the back of the dining room. The restaurant filled up while we were there, and the atmosphere was kind of fun and festive. The boys went a little crazy at the end, and it was loud enough that their noise level wasn't a problem. My three-year-old lying on the floor, though, was, and at one point, our waiter got impatient and moved him out of the way. Understandable, and service was otherwise pretty friendly, if inattentive. My mom and I shared a burger, which was decent, with a beef patty, cheddar, gherkins, tomato, onion, and burger sauce, and a little onion ring on top. It came with fries, which were also fairly satisfying. More importantly, the kids got a heap of spaghetti with butter, plus apple juice and hot chocolate with mini marshmallows for dessert. I skipped the hot cocoa but did enjoy a glass of pinot noir. If you're in Colmar during Christmas season and just need somewhere to sit and eat, L'Amandine is a good bet. There's wine for you, and food and drink for your children.

For the uninitiated, it's kind of like a flatbread pizza with white sauce and bacon, but even that description doesn't do it justice -- you'll just have to try it! In any case, at lunchtime I had my mind made up for some tarte flambée. A quick search on the app helped me find a nearby restaurant, and my friend and I made our way over. We were immediately seated indoors (although there are large heaters if you want to brave the outdoor seating during the winter time) and placed our order for a tarte flambée. It quickly arrived at our table and -- as happens with a tarte flambée -- it disappeared quickly, and already had our eyes on a different one. My friend ran to the restroom, and while he was gone a server came by to clear his utensils. I asked him to leave them and requested another tarte flambée. A stretch of time passed before our first server came back and we told her we had wanted to order another tarte flambée, and had the other server put that order in. He hadn't, so we had to wait a bit longer. Once not even a crumb was left, we requested the check. It took a while to come, and we gave our server our credit card. After about 10 minutes she hadn't come back by, and we inquired about our check. "Oh, our credit card machines are down and we had to reboot them." Another 10-15 minutes and we inquired again. She came back by with our card and said that the machine was broken, and there is an ATM down the street where we can grab cash. That whole bit was a little inconvenient, so make sure you bring cash and expect service that might be off-putting to Americans. But with the right payment and the right expectations, you'll have a good meal at Jupiler.
