I recently was looking for fabulous glasses. I went to the NewBrighton location. They were having their tent sale on frames. My sister came along as well. We had such a fun time looking for funky glasses and sunglasses. The staff were amazing!!! I can't remember all their names but as far as I could tell they all were so helpful to everyone. They helped us both find glasses that were fun and looked great! I found 3 pairs as well as my sister did too. As I was getting checked out, I kept staring at the woman that was helping me. She had the coolest glasses on (Tom Fords). I tried them on and fell in love ( not on sale).This pair was usually out of my price range but I have good eye insurance that covered majority of them. So, I walked out with 4 pairs of glasses. I also had an exam that day. It was a great experience. I felt like I finally got the exact prescription I needed. I went to the Spectacle Shoppe in New Brighton with a unique situation.I was going out of town but needed glasses for about a month because I was having another procedure done later. I met Kimberly Subias, who has a very pleasant business demeanor. She took me through what my options might be taking my insurance into consideration. She understood my unique situation and provided several options. I had been to other optical shops but Kimberly explained my options better than anyone. I highly recommend Kimberly as she is easy to talk to and is a warm people person. I enjoyed going to the Spectacle Shoppe as Kim provided the best possible experience for me. These guys managed to totally and completely alienate me as a customer over the past 24 hours!!! I went there yesterday to get a replacement set of lenses for some fancy prescription reading glasses I purchased there a few years ago. They're nice custom jobs...titanium and bamboo frames. They quoted me $702--for ONE pair of lenses (see photo)! The glasses (and the lenses) only cost me 500 bucks to begin with? The sales guy there is excellent (and could talk an Eskimo into buying ice). So like an idiot, I left my glasses there...but I had major buyer's remorse driving home. And my wife flipped out when I got home, especially since you can get excellent lenses from Walmart for $100...and the nicest, fanciest lenses with the most expensive coatings can barely break 200 bucks at Walmart or Sam's Club or Costco. Spoiler alert: all of the eye glass companies in the Twin Cities send there stuff out to just a couple of companies. The margins these guys operate on are bigger than a drug dealer--amazing! I MIGHT have remained a customer for custom frames, but they lied to me when I came to pickup my glasses (and cancel my order) today. First, they offered to give me 200 bucks off. They came off the 200 so fast, this confirms what a rip-off their prices are. Second, they told me they couldn't give me my prescription because I didn't do the exam there and it wasn't in their computer. Wait, how were you going to make my 700 dollar lenses then? Liars! Third, they told me since I hadn't had an exam for a few years, it was too old and I need to do a new one now. Wait, you were going to make my lenses with the old prescription 5 minutes ago! And--hello--I'm cancelling. Besides, my old prescription for reading glasses is fine. The shenanigans over the last 24 hours ensures that I will NEVER walk through their doors again. I have never been treated so well. I found them in my medical directory--wished I had known them before. The service was exceptional. No need to wait a month or more for appointments. Dr. mike explained the exam every step of the way and made me feel very comfortable. The best fitting eyewear--no adjustment to reading when I got home, they just felt good. I have had problems with eye drops and dry eyes for years---found the right treatment and within one week my eyes feel great. My husband has been very happy with their glasses and services, so when I wanted to look for new glasses with the right lens for my eyes, he suggested I try the Spectacle Shoppe. I made an appointment, arrived several minutes early , filled out my paperwork and right away Dr.Mike K. whisked me away. Every test he took he explained completely the hows and whys and it was the most comfortable and informative eye exam I have ever had. He then turned me over to Carol H. She was awesome helping me with a perfect frame and I left feeling excited for my glass choice. I was told to expect a week! 3 days later I received a call, they were ready!! I received them today, fortunately for me Carol H was there to help fit the frames right and I left! I can't say enough for the total ease and comfort my whole experience was! I love my glasses, wore them to work, received lots of compliments and with the proper lens, my work did not include eye strain. AND no need for drugs to get ride of headaches! Although it's more expensive than those big chain, strip mall optical stores, the Spectacle Shoppe more than makes up for it by offering a fantastic selection of stylish, high quality (including vintage) frames and outstanding, personalized customer service! My current pair of glasses were purchased at the New Brighton store in September 2017, five months before I moved to California. Then, in November 2018, I went into a local big chain optical store to get them adjusted, since they were starting to slip down my nose. After working on them for a couple minutes, the young man helping me returned and told me that my frames "had failed" (i.e., they were broken) and offered to find me a new pair that would fit my lenses. I said "no way," ran home to put on my old backup glasses, and contacted the Spectacle Shoppe for emergency assistance. The wonderful Bonnie Lavell took my call, looked up my order, and ordered a duplicate frame for me free of charge. I shipped her my glasses by Priority Mail and had a good-as-new pair of glasses back in under two weeks! A big shout out to Bonnie Lavell and the Spectacle Shoppe! (If I still lived in Minnesota, they would surely have me as a loyal customer for life!) read more

So, this place gets a solid 4 stars from me -- The good: They were quick and they were able to make new lenses for glasses that LensCrafters wouldn't touch because they didn't sell them and claimed they'd not be able to make the lenses in the proper shape. And, did I mention quick? They did this in a day... actually, in 2 hours. That's the perk of coming to this location vs. the on South Robert -- that location sends some (all?) of their lenses out to this location to be done... so, at least for my drill-through style lenses, coming up here made a huge difference in turnaround time. The bad: This place is pricey -- I paid ~$270 for two single vision polycarbonate lenses with the anti-glare coating. It was worth it because we needed them quickly, but it was still more expensive than some other places with slower turnaround times. The other bad thing was that they don't seem to have fixed prices -- I'd called yesterday and got one price and when I came in the lady behind the counter asked if I'd gotten a price quote and the number she came up with was higher than what I'd been told over the phone. I dunno, maybe one could work that to get a better price... but for me, it was a bit of a turn-off. read more

LOVE LOVE LOVE my new glasses! I've been shopping for new frames for 4 months and I am kicking myself for not going to the Spectacle Shoppe first. The selection is enormous and the service is beyond excellent. Bonnie and Carter were SO extremely patient and helpful! I had to make a couple of trips there because I changed my mind about the first frames I ordered and I needed to change up the lenses. They were so intent on making sure I was happy with my glasses - it was amazing. In the past four months, I managed to visit at least 9 other stores and none even comes close to the Spectacle Shoppe. My glasses are lovely and the assistance in making a choice was very good. I just wish I had them when they said I would. But the glasses came back as sunglasses and the wait to have them done correctly was very long. (and they don't seem overly concerned about making me wait ...) You need to know that the "sale" price comes out to basically the same as full price anywhere else. They are very, very expensive, and I think you need to know what you're getting into before you come here. If you are looking for one of a kind, unusual glasses (I was), then this might be the place for you provided you can love with a hefty price tag; if you're looking for "just glasses", I'd steer clear. read more

I cannot say enough good things about this place. First of all, the selection can't be beat. I have never seen so many gorgeous vintage frames in one place. Some of them are works of art. Although to be fair, I am a huge lover of glasses, the world's most underrated accessory. Maybe that's part of it - they get me there. Also, their staff are so helpful. They have this crazy magic power of knowing what will look good on you before you try it on...and what won't. And they tell you the truth! They won't let you walk out of there looking dorky...fabulous only. After my glasses were done I was having a lot of trouble with the new prescription. Oh, and I sat on my brand new glasses. :( So, I've been into the shop several times over the past few weeks to get them fixed & fitted with a different prescription. They remember my name and give me roses and chocolate when I stop in. I am not kidding! Plus they have fresh-baked cookies and coffee for free, so if you're waiting for your lenses to be put in, it's a nice comfortable (and delicious) wait. To sum up - not only is the selection amazing, but they follow it up with fantastic customer service (and flowers, and chocolate). I will never go anywhere else for eyewear. read more

I give compliments where compliments are deserved, and the Spectacle Shoppe earned it! I am 22 years old and I have been in glasses since I was one. Least to say I have been to a handful of eyeglass shops and have worn a good deal of glasses, as well. I ran across them only a few years back but I wish I would have found them much sooner. First of all, they have a beautiful collection of frames that are from companies that produce high quality frames and that start from different price points. They do have some pricey frames as well but these frames are works of art and are by no means your "typical" frames. Secondly, they sell a huge selection of vintage frames at all their locations (largest collection in New Brighton). Besides the fact that I love vintage pieces, I am always looking for something bigger and better to wear as a fashion statement and I have found that vintage frames can do that for me (and it maybe it something that would work for you...but haven't had the chance to try it!). Next, I LOVE their customer service. Don't underestimate me because of my age but I grew up in retail and I am looking for excellent service. The Spectacle Shoppe offers that. I have been to three of their four locations and every on staff that I have worked with have been nothing but pleasant and willing to help whether that be adjusting and cleaning my glasses, giving their personal and expert advice on picking out new frames, or coming up with solutions. For example: They offered to get my glasses fit in a short time frame since they new I would be heading back to college. Or, they mailed me a letter telling me that my anti-glare lenses may have defects and that they would replace them at no cost with no issues at all. Finally, this is a business that has a passion for making your time their unique. They value their customers. They realize that eyeglasses are meant to be fun and want to help you get the right pair that reflects your style. An at the end of the day, whether you purchases a pair or not, they make you feel special and will leave you with flowers and chocolates to take home. And No, I was not paid to write this. read more

Amazing customer service! Twice now the Spectacle Shoppe has fixed our bad prescriptions from other ophthalmologist. Dr. Krysiak re-refracted my son and found that the original prescription was incorrect, the Spectacle Shoppe re made my sons glasses at no charge, even though the mistake wasn't theirs! I was so impressed :) Dr. Krysiak does complete exams, so no need to spend hours at an ophthalmologists office. My son has special needs and he's so kind and patient with him. I am absolutely floored that this place averages more than 2 stars. I had one of the most awkward and uncomfortable consumer experiences I've ever had at this place recently. I purchased a Groupon from this place ($40 for $250) last fall - seemed like a great deal at the time. When I walked in the door of this place, I set my eyes on a place more cluttered and outdated than my grandmothers attic. There was a bizarre crowd in the store - some looking at dusty frames, others just sitting around in different random areas (a bit creepy). I was "helped" by three different employees as I browsed, each trying to sell me on off brand, ugly, and vastly overpriced frames (I quickly found out that they had just taken the Groupon amount and added it to sticker price). The glasses in this place are off brand, dusty, and outdated. When I finally found a pair to settle on (just to use the Groupon), I was rung up for a sale. The $299 price on the glasses became $650 after adding the lenses to the glasses and adding anti-glare coding. If this isn't highway robbery I don't know what is. I told the lady I would rather just buy sunglasses and not waste money on a sub-par pair of outdated glasses. I grabbed a pair of sunglasses from a rack, expecting to pay the price shown on the price tag ($199), and went back to try to complete another sale. These were not great sunglasses. I didn't know the name brand but at this point, just wanted to use my groupon and get out of there. The sales lady then rang me up and asked for $400 because the price tag didn't include the lenses... Apparently cheap plastic frames cost $199 at this place. At that point I just left. The Groupon is a sunk cost and I'd rather throw it away than have to suffer another visit to this establishment. My advice is to steer clear. Go to a place with an inventory of quality, not just quantity, and somewhere that offers reasonable prices. The creepy factor of this place and its staff was off the charts...take it from me and go elsewhere. read more

I was having issues with my eyes because I stare at a computer all day at work. I had my exam there to figure out the problem. The optometrist was very helpful in showing me what new corrective lenses can do to help ease the strain in my eye. I already have glasses, but was not prescribed new glasses to work at my desk. In addition to the medical care, their options for frames are amazing. So many different varieties of style. That alone, makes it worth a visit. I tried out my new glasses and by the end of the work day my eyes were no longer in pain from the strain of looking at two screens. Lastly, the customer service was amazing. Everyone was friendly and asked lots of questions to make sure I was getting the care I needed. read more

Spectacle Shoppe is TERRIBLE with insurance -- avoid, avoid! I've had two preventative exams in a row that insurance wouldn't cover (despite having insurance that covers preventative exams). First, because their billing department insisted on submitting to insurance coded as a "retailer," instead of submitting as the optometrist. Naturally, insurance rejected this as retail store is not in-network -- and Spectcacle Shoppe's accountant was unwilling and/or unable to properly re-code and re-submit for insurance coverage. Second, the optometrist, who had been previously in-network, let his in-network status expire...yet they happily took my insurance card and didn't mention this at time of appointment. So I'm on the hook again for the full cost of preventative exam, which my insurance covers, all due to Spectacle Shoppe's inability to work with insurance. I love the style of my glasses and the ability of staff to help me pick frames that suit me well, and I love Dr. Mike K as an optometrist -- but the markup on both frames and lenses is absolutely astronomical, and their repeated issues with insurance (and un-helpfulness in resolving them) are the last straw. The place is so cool. They have thousands of frames in the shop to choose from. They even have a room filled with vintage frames. And I mean FILLED. The customer service was amazing. A gentleman named Joe helped me. I highly recommend him. He didn't pressure me at all and was extremely helpful. Once I looked through ALL of the glasses, he helped me narrow down my options, then finally pick some frames. He gave me a great deal on the whole package I received. They got the glasses done in an hour, which was great. I didn't expect that from a small boutique! When I left Joe gave me a chocolate and a yellow rose for me AND my sister. So sweet! I'll be honest--my main motivation for going to The Spectacle Shoppe was a Groupon that I got on sale ($34 for $250 towards the price of frames). I also knew that it had a great selection from someone who had gone there. I went in for an eye exam and the doctor clearly explained to me what was going on with my eyes and my options for lens, etc. He gave me the time to talk about things in detail, I did not feel rushed, and I like that he himself did the whole exam (I've gone to clinics where a technician has done most of it). I am happiest about the fact that he gave me the option of *not* having my pupils dilated--which I had been dreading--as he said it did not appear necessary. I had not been given that option by other docs. Picking out frames was a bit overwhelming as the selection is huge. They do, however, seem to have the pricier designer frames in one section of the room to prevent sticker shock. The technicians were great in helping me decide on a frame and in breaking down the pricing so I understood what was going on. The Groupon was a great deal and helped a lot with the cost. Best part? They gave me a red rose when I completed the purchase! I highly recommend The Spectacle Shoppe. I will be going back. read more

We have had a great experience with the Spectacle Shoppe. We found out our young daughter needed glasses and found a pair there for a very reasonable price. They spent a lot of time with us, letting us try on every frame they had. They always have cookies, which works like a charm to get her to sit still while we go through different frame options. When the time came to pick up her glasses, they turned out to be a little big and were squishing her eyes, so they swapped them out with a smaller size. The staff told us to test drive the glasses for a week or two and that if there were any problems, we should come back and find a new pair of frames. Fast forward a few weeks--we were having a small issue with the glasses, so I took my daughter in to see if we could get them fixed. I wasn't sure what to expect, but they immediately offered to replace the frames. We were in and out in about 3 minutes; it couldn't have been easier. read more

I bought a Groupon $40/$250 value for the Spectacle Shoppe because I wanted plain reading glasses. Was shocked when I got to the store and the cheapest frames were $259! I bought designer frames, no line bifocal, transition coated lenses last year at Costco for $260. The Groupon was a $40 lesson on how to waste money at a store who knows gow to rip ff their customers. I will go back to Costco for my reading glasses. My original visit to Spectacle Shoppe was great while working with Brad. He made me feel like part of his family; great customer service. That is not why I'm writing this review. After purchasing my glasses that day, I received a phone call a few days later saying my glasses were in store for pick up. When I arrived at the store, I was greeted by a woman at the front desk. At first impression she was nice, but the longer I worked with her to custom fit my new glasses to my head, she became more and more withdrawn. I felt as if I was a burden. Each time she came back after customizing my glasses, she had an excuse why she shouldn't keep changing my glasses to fit correctly. Her exact words were, "can you see?, are they going to fall off?" I answered no to these questions. I tried to explain to her that the glasses were too tight on my temples. She would not make anymore alterations, and sent me away. After driving for 15 minutes, I arrived home. I now have a headache do to the glasses not fitting properly. It's extremely unfortunate that I spent $680 on a pair of glasses (including $100 discount) and cannot actually get them to fit me properly. read more

I visited their Burnsville location, and both the service and selection were excellent! My initial experience several months ago buying my glasses was great. Customer service was top notch and very helpful. But the best part came this week when I accidently broke my frames playing with my kids. I went into the store to find out if I could just get new frames to put my current lenses in. It turned out that they did not have any in stock and they were no longer available. So instead they offered to let me pick new frames and they would make new lenses for free. Since the lenses were the most expensive part I thought I was doing well. After I found a pair of frames I liked (loved!) they informed me that they would consider it a warranty exchange and there would be NO CHARGE AT ALL! I was pleasantly surprised and I will definitely go there again, and I recommend you do too. read more

I have been a customer of theirs for many, many years. Over those years I have spent alot of money in their store and I was severely disappointed in the customer service and material shenanigans that they had played on me. I paid for high index lenses and in the end they put in polycarbonate lenses and tried to pass them off as high index. Having called them on it...the tech and manager said that the polycarbonate lenses were comparable in price to the high index lenses. Any normal person whose worn glasses for most of their life knows that polycarbonate lenses are more than half the cost of high index and are used for mostly children's frames because they are durable. However when you pay for scratch coatings and antireflective coatings these coatings will not hold up over time on a polycarbonate lense. Essentially the Spectacle Shoppe was trying to pull the wool over my eyes and rip me off. Their customer service was horrible! I had to call each time to find out the status of my glasses and contacts. I am deeply disappointed that this once grand eyewear store has stooped to such levels as trying to deceive their long standing repeat business customers. It's very unfortunate that it has come down to this. So buyer beware....you may not be getting what you really paid for. read more
